Singular Point is one of those entries into the Godzilla franchise where I wouldn't want every entry to be like it, but I'm glad that at least this one exists. True, nobody ever shuts up, but it's because everyone's desperately treading water dealing with high concept n-dimensional stuff that comes from a guy with a math doctorate writing about the premise of "what are the implications of something as seemingly physically impossible as Godzilla actually existing?"

Hell, I'll take that over that Planet of Monsters dreck, which also has characters never shutting the gently caress up, but more because they're too melodramatically stupid rather than being too smart.

Yeah I think it's fun that in ways we are just getting more Godzilla with the flexibility of it being "ok, here's XXX person's version of Godzilla". Not all of them will click with me but for other people it will.

Personally there's a chance that I'll be in Japan in November and if the new G movie is still in theaters then I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Singular Point somehow plants itself past the extreme end of that scale.

Most anime is too dialogue heavy to no real end, but SP felt like it made solid use of it.

Then again, I'm the kind of geek who kept pausing so I could follow along with all computer screens and text messages so maybe my viewpoint is atypical.

It was all gibberish but it served some purpose in the story I suppose. Wasn't a huge fan of it but the action stuff was fine.

I appreciated how Singular Point built up a sense of dread, then delivered on an apocalypse. There was a throwaway line near the end where "Near Godzilla, a triangle is no longer 180 degrees." and somehow that clicked for me as being a good way to say "this is a big, reality-ending, scary deal."

Also while they may have been talky, I actually enjoyed a lot of the characters.

Don't ask me why there was a godzilla skeleton in a basement, broadcasting a tune, or how that connects back to... Red Dust Something in India computer though.

And Salunga was neat.

This is def a show that benefits from being watched on a computer so you can just tap the space bar to pause real quick.

History shows, again and again, how nature points out the folly of man.
Singular Point was cool in the moment and some of the visuals have stuck with me but otherwise I can't recall anything beyond a vague outline of the plot and have basically zero interest in revisiting it.

Got any deathsticks?
I decided to rewatch G14 last night. Overall a decent movie with some all time classic scenes but way way too dark on my monitor. If I ever get an HDR monitor or TV I'll have to see if that helps with the black levels or if the image quality for the film is just permanently hosed.

I like how the movie doesn't give two shits about how tall G is supposed to be so he is as big as the scene requires. And he's usually really loving big.

The thing that stood out to me the most was the music. I love how in KOTM McCreary made those updated versions of the Ifukube score but Desplat's music is incredible. It's a love letter to old monster movie music and the he adds those really unsettling whistling sound effects on top of the main theme. It's so unique sounding.

Depends on which copy you watched - the original bluray was really dark but got corrected for the 4K release.

Goddammit, the shot of the monorail track lights coming back on and tracing around to the MUTO is so loving good. Gareth Edwards is so underrated.

At the end of G14 did godzilla wake up after the battle because he was just napping under the rubble or did he absorb the radiation from the nuke after it exploded off the coast? It'd be cool if he did the latter and ended up saving the city from radioactive fallout

I don't recall seeing this one mentioned here. It's a Thai monster movie, I don't know if it's technically kaiju but it's a big motherfucker and the creature effects look gorgeous. It's been out awhile outside the U.S., anyone seen it?

LOL that's my imgur post :haw:

My favourite is that someone went to the effort of making an anatomical diagram for Dodongo, an Ultraman kaiju that was pretty much just some other kaiju's horse. For some reason they showed it breathing out black smoke which wasn't something it ever did on screen.
