They still sell special raw ground beef for cannibal sandwiches in eastern Wisconsin and across the northern Midwest/Great Plains. It’s also called “tiger meat” and a bunch of other things I’m sure. A very tasty holiday snack.

Proust Malone posted:Three dudes who met on twitter, doing a podcast, getting paid on patreon. Cmon dude, the goal posts are back over here. Yeah you’re not wrong, they’re using all those platforms. The whole point is that the platforms don’t matter. They’re just repackaging and digitizing existing ideas. Yes they’re making them more convenient and more accessible by putting them on the internet, but they don’t need a pat on the back or a major chunk of the global economy to do so. Twitter - not much different from shouting in a public square or a letter to the editor, both time honored traditions Podcast - radio show or once again shouting in a public square Patreon - Latin root patron, deriving from Ancient Rome The model of 1-3 cranks making fun of popular politics and culture and the public adoring them despite their disgusting hygiene and character flaws is so incredibly ancient. It might be the oldest profession other than prostitute. Like the first prostitute started working and then the first crank started a “podcast” in their tribe to complain about the quality of hand jobs. Even the old timey episodes where they speak with a Mid Atlantic accent and talk about being addicted to heroin and laudanum - you can fully imagine that these three misfit useless men would either be doing this exact same thing in 1933 or perhaps dying of consumption. Might as well say the Chapo Trap House boys owe all their success to Jonas Salk because they have the lung capacity to blow hard rather than die of polio.

The correct argument anyway is that Patreon is a symptom of Silicon Valley rent-seeking who always need more somehow. Patreon as a service works. There are things to improve, to scale, etc. but I can’t imagine the costs aren’t relatively static. And every dollar that goes to a Patreon, they get SOME kind of cut. It’s like a casino. How do you gently caress that up!? But they’ve had moments where they try to do something because clearly it isn’t enough for the VC ghouls.

The fact is that all of the internet platform backbone stuff that runs everything and makes modern ‘creativity’ (I.e podcasts) possible is really just something that should be a public utility. Taxpayer funded posting platforms, taxi dispatch apps, food delivery apps, webhosting, etc etc is really where it should go. It’s just infrastructure now, and should be publicly owned. Trying to shoehorn some kind of angle for profit making is pointless.

I will say that I'm surprised the Patreon industry as a whole hasn't taken more of a hit with the price of groceries being what it is but I guess when you're looking for places to cut, $5 a month doesn't seem like the most obvious place to start

You could say Jake Sully was a hypocrite for traveling the stars to pandora and using the cutting edge of technology to walk around in his avatar. The important thing was he recognized the errors of his ways and led a successful insurgency against the American empire.

Yeah, I used to love comicbookdb.com. Someone bought them out and then, instead of updating it like they promised, just shuttered the site. And in the process they bought up a lot of people's free labour in cataloguing old books and just took it off the Internet.

When I'm looking to cut back, a few bucks for a lot of content to make work suck less isn't where I start. Although I haven't shelled out for Chapo yet, just one or two others. Plus it's easy to forget, and on top of that most people donating probably feel invested/connected. Unless it's changed I think most Patreons see about 10-20% attrition at the end of each month from credit cards being declined. Then some of them filter back in after payday and they have a chance to sort out the card. So some number of Patreon subscribers aren't rich. No idea if it's gone up recently, I'd assume so. I saw a couple of very different Twitch streamers explaining that while January usually sees them lose a lot of paid subscribers it was really bad this year.

Credit cards will still work indefinitely even if you have $0, as long as you haven’t started missing payments, and most debit cards probably still allow overdrafts. I’d guess that normal card expirations and number changes due to fraud drive more of the churn/resub activity.
