So did Donnie Yen present at the Oscars or was he canceled for loyalty to president Xi?

One of the reasons of the HK entertainment industry's demise was the rich people figured out how to make their talentless sons and daughters into stars. So you ended up with a bunch of new stars that just want the glamour of celebrity lives but didn't care about the work effort or the fine craft. You can see the songs are noticeably worse after the 90s and that had nothing to do with the movie distribution model.

If your entertainment products are just lumping alot of production value together, then the markets in mainland and Taiwan and ASEAN don't need you, they can mass produce their own 2nd rate pop songs and popcorn action movies and send the cgi work to the cgi slave shops.

Failsons and manufactured stars exist in every entertainment industry, Beijing has those Dan factories where every 4 years a new talentless Zhang Ziyi and Zhou Xun clone is spawned. That kinda of stuff is never really factor in the long run. Hong Kong's golden era of cinema is also very much built on a lot of people churning low quality work for fast money, including the big names. The problem becomes when low quality is all there is.

A good way to read the decline of the HK film industry in the 90's is the career of one Donnie Yen, as unlike many others, he tried to brave it out.

Late 80's and early 90's Yen is living in the shadow of Jackie Chan and Jet Li, but he is doing the right things as he is clearly talented, working with directors like Tsui Hark, Yuen Woo-ping, Corey Yuen, and co staring with the likes of Jet Li, Michelle Yeoh, Brigitte Lin, Tony Leung(Both of them!), the man was slowly going places. By 95 the HK film is already on a downward spiral and Yen is stuck in VCD hell for the rest of the decade, doing all kinds of low budget weird poo poo, including an attempt at producing and directing films by himself, and getting in trouble with triads when he ended up bankrupt.

Then in 2000 Jet Li showed that cool rear end fight from Once Upon a Time in China 2 to Zhang Yimou, and he gets cast in the mega Beijing production Hero and things got slowly better for him.

Australia’s nuclear submarine program will cost up to $368 billion over the next three decades, with confirmation that the federal government will buy at least three American-manufactured nuclear submarines and contribute "significant additional resources" to US shipyards.

The Australian government will take three, potentially second-hand Virginia-class submarines early next decade, pending the approval of the US Congress.

Most of the analysis of Aussie nuclear sub deal I read is that it's a US defensive move. US's military thinks they have no advantage in the first island chain, and 2nd island only has Guam, so they are reinforcing the 3rd island chain to backup Guam. But the thing is they are making Aussie to pay for the reinforcement which is funny. And using nuclear sub as the tool to pull Australia into US's "pacific mini NATO" is a bad move, it brings too many new uncertainty factors to the regional geopolitics, and it undermines the "rules of the great game" between the superpowers.

Who is to say China or Russia wouldn't least nuclear subs to Indonesia? Or even better, "jointly develop" a new nuclear sub. China also has a catalog of new small to medium sized surface fleet to sell to ASEAN countries. This is the part China has advantage over US.
