Raspberry Pi is highly focused on industrial use and is directing nearly all supply to this. They’ve been doing this for three years and there are better/more available products out there from groups like OrangePi and RockPi. They’ve also gone full mask off and are hiring cops who specialize in surveillance devices

I’ve been playing with a few Orange Pi 3 LTS boards and aside from some headaches with the latest Armbian release (you have to use Bullseye, not Jammy), they work perfectly well as a pi replacement. You just don’t get the benefit of prefab drop and go images like raspberry pi and have to install software you want manually, but usually that’s as simple as curl something.GitHub.com/install.sh | sh Anyways for the price and availability I recommend them. I have one acting as a Spotify connect server (basically a chromecast audio) for my speakers in my living room, and I’m gonna set up another as a pihole at some point.

I have a soft spot for BeagleBoards as I got one before Raspberry Pis were a thing. I've always been a little wary of Pis because of their kind of DRM-y roots (the main CPU being the GPU, running a mystery blob with full RTOS and the ARM you get to use is the secondary CPU, always felt a bit wasteful - though there are early-on efforts to reverse engineer/create from scratch a GPU blob). The BeagleBoards are associated with Texas Instruments and TI themselves seem to have been mainlining kernel patches for their chips, so it all just works (though the PowerVR GPU drivers are still binary blobs, you don't need those to boot the CPU, just for OpenGL), and you can actually buy some Linux-capable TI chips from Digikey/Mouser so if you somehow decided to go into making a custom PCB for some Linux project, it wouldn't have some huge barrier to entry. Sadly, they're still more expensive than Pis

Here's a review of a bunch of stuff I bought! I haven't had any of this stuff for more than a week or two, so anything that I recommend is without the knowledge of longevity. I grabbed a few pairs of sunglasses. The last two pair I owned were medium price; one was a $150 Allen Edmonds pair on sale for like $30, so that's what I'm comparing to. $5. In my den I have a Retro USB console connected to my flatscreen, runs exactly like an NES but with native HDMI out, and I can swap the flash cart into it.

Felt like I was gonna break the machine and/or myself in the process.

I also picked up some decent  gold earrings for a few bucks a pair and boring stuff like a long, flexible, stiff-bristled brush to clean out the dryer-lint port. All in all, a good haul this time around.
