Yeah I've been using this for some time now. It does struggle with some videos that use certain codecs, I've not been able to figure out exactly what combo of things causes the issue, it's fine for 99% of everything I throw at it though.

Raspberry Pi is highly focused on industrial use and is directing nearly all supply to this. They’ve been doing this for three years and there are better/more available products out there from groups like OrangePi and RockPi.

They’ve also gone full mask off and are hiring cops who specialize in surveillance devices

I’ve been playing with a few Orange Pi 3 LTS boards and aside from some headaches with the latest Armbian release (you have to use Bullseye, not Jammy), they work perfectly well as a pi replacement. You just don’t get the benefit of prefab drop and go images like raspberry pi and have to install software you want manually, but usually that’s as simple as curl something.GitHub.com/install.sh | sh

Anyways for the price and availability I recommend them. I have one acting as a Spotify connect server (basically a chromecast audio) for my speakers in my living room, and I’m gonna set up another as a pihole at some point.

I have a soft spot for BeagleBoards as I got one before Raspberry Pis were a thing.

I've always been a little wary of Pis because of their kind of DRM-y roots (the main CPU being the GPU, running a mystery blob with full RTOS and the ARM you get to use is the secondary CPU, always felt a bit wasteful - though there are early-on efforts to reverse engineer/create from scratch a GPU blob).

The BeagleBoards are associated with Texas Instruments and TI themselves seem to have been mainlining kernel patches for their chips, so it all just works (though the PowerVR GPU drivers are still binary blobs, you don't need those to boot the CPU, just for OpenGL), and you can actually buy some Linux-capable TI chips from Digikey/Mouser so if you somehow decided to go into making a custom PCB for some Linux project, it wouldn't have some huge barrier to entry.

Sadly, they're still more expensive than Pis :(

Here's a review of a bunch of stuff I bought! I haven't had any of this stuff for more than a week or two, so anything that I recommend is without the knowledge of longevity.

I grabbed a few pairs of sunglasses. The last two pair I owned were medium price; one was a $150 Allen Edmonds pair on sale for like $30, so that's what I'm comparing to.

$5. Seems pretty decent.

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256...randl_shipto=US

$5. Small to medium size frames. I like the look, but they're heavy enough that it bothers my face muscles, and the arms were aligned too inward. I tried gently prying them open to fit better, but I felt a crack. I'd skip these.

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256...randl_shipto=US

$4. Lightweight, translucent appearance. Possibly my favorite pair of the bunch

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256...randl_shipto=US

$3. Costume grade. Avoid unless you want to look like John Lennon

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256...randl_shipto=US

$10. My second favorite pair of the group. Are they worth double the price of the other ones at $5? Time will tell. I like the design though.

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256...randl_shipto=US

One thing I noticed with all the glasses was that a couple of them didn't have the rubber tip over the arms, and it's really noticeable. I need to figure out how to cover them so they don't dig into my head when I'm not very careful about putting them on.

$3. Have already dropped my phone a couple times and did its job. Looks good.

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256...randl_shipto=US

$2. Looks clear and durable. Haven't used it enough to know if it's going to yellow quickly, but for $2, you could change them monthly.

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256...randl_shipto=US

$25. I measured my feet at 27.5cm and ordered size 45. I typically wear a 10.5 wide or 11 in US sizes. I could not possibly go smaller and have them fit, but they don't feel bad. There's nothing approaching natural fabric on here, and I'm concerned they're going to be sweaty and stuffy as a result. I wore them around the house for a couple hours and they felt ok. I'm not sure how they'll hold up outside; it's still too wintery here to find out.

I wanted a really futuristic shoe and was surprised that it was harder to find than I'd have expected. I ended up settling for gaudy rather than futuristic. What's a futuristic shoe? I don't know. There may have been a couple pair that were closer to what I wanted but were $60+ so I skipped them. I do know that nothing in probably 100 pages of results over six or seven searches jumped out at me.

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2255...randl_shipto=US

$12. I wanted to check the actual power usage of my desktop computer, living room computer, space heater, etc. Informative. Doesn't feel like total junk.

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2255...randl_shipto=US

$5. These are weirdly expensive. Try looking up salt dish on Amazon. A little bigger than I expected, but basically what I needed, which was something other than a 5lb box of kosher salt on my counter.

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256...randl_shipto=US

$7. A light for reading to my kids at night. It's fine, but it only has three brightness levels and no temp options. The one we paid a couple bucks more for from Amazon had a dimmer built in and three temperatures. I'd just buy that one again next time, unless I could find the exact model on Ali (which I was not able to do this time)

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256...randl_shipto=US

$20. I wanted a wild set of keycaps, and I found them. A friend walked over and said my keyboard looks like his guns in COD. They're a slicker and very slightly lower quality feeling keycap than came on my Corsair mechanical board, but not distractingly so. They sure are shiny, and remain so after a week or two of typing on them regularly. They don't quite all fit because the various function keys on the bottom row of this board are every so slightly different sized than the standard design, but that's not the keycap's fault. Fairly pleased with these.

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256...randl_shipto=US

$7. I wanted a digital thermometer so I could see the measured internal and external temps. This arrived with the screen detached but functioning, so I had to crack it open and glue it in place. It feels really flimsy, but seems to work just fine. I think the relative humidity reading is interior though, and I wanted it to be exterior. I'd probably look for a different one if I were to replace it.

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2255...randl_shipto=US

$20. I'm sick of grinding pepper manually like some sort of idiot. Feels decent, looks great, and functions well. I don't know what else you'd need out of your pepper grinder. I like that these can sit on your table or counter and not look like a web-enabled dildo from 2004.

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256...randl_shipto=US

$11. In my quest for the the closest thing to a fire sword I can find, I decided to try this lighter. The flame is solidly long. Four inches maybe? Seems to burn pretty hot too. I haven't gotten to start a camp fire with it yet, which is 95% of its purpose. It did pretty well at melting a soda can though. Fine as a big silly lighter, but I'm still keeping my eyes out for something that will concern my wife when I use it.

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256...randl_shipto=US

$10. I have an old Xbox 360 wireless receiver that stopped working, and the issue may be a popped resistor. I found a tutorial online for soldering a jumper over it, and I've been meaning to get a soldering iron, so I ordered this. So far I'm disappointed - I can barely get it to melt solder, even with it dialed up to 500c (supposedly). Is it not actually getting hot enough, or is the solder included garbage? I ordered another roll of solder from Amazon, so we'll soon find out what the issue is.

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2251...randl_shipto=US

$5. Ordered the Shady Pines and Great Northern Lodge key chains. The Shady Pines one is smaller? Both are real metal though, and a cute gift for ~$3 each.

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2251...randl_shipto=US

$20. This is what I landed on in my search for a PC controller with a decent feeling dpad. I've only used it for 5 or 10 minutes so far, but it felt much better than the 360 pad. How does a 8bitdo compare? No idea, since they're 3x the cost. If you're planning on logging some hours, I'm sure the 8bitdo is worth it. For an hour on an occasional Sunday morning, it feels totally passable so far.

Speaking of crazy shoes, I was just introduced to these:

It'd be fun to find something like that on Ali, but I barely know where to begin. "Hinged shoes" didn't help, ha.

I've had some good purchases lately, so here's another effortpost.

Pocket Bluetooth Speaker Bone Conduction Wireless Stereo Soundbar Under Pillow Music Box Built-in White Noise Improve Sleep

I realized that my old lovely speaker that I'd been using under my pillow would no longer physically connect to my devices without more fuss than I'm willing to invest at bedtime, but this Bluetooth speaker is a great replacement. Very thin and light, great for travel, pairs easily, and the timer function works great. The only negative is the onboard white noise (rain/nature sounds and also train sounds, which I normally love): it's just way too loud, and I don't think there's a way to adjust the volume on the device itself. Maybe I just need to take a closer look. I don't know if it's actual bone conduction, but I hear it fine through my pillow regardless.

5pcs Food Sealing Clip Kitchen Condiment Bag Seal Clamp Tool Plastic Bag Discharge Spout Plastic Food Sealing Bag Clip

I bought this for a bag of sweet bean paste, and it's admittedly not great for that; squeezing a thick paste through the spout forces the clip open (and then the bag, yikes). But it's great for coffee, beans, rice, cereal--anything free-flowing.

Dumpling Maker Machine Kitchen Gadget Accessories Double Head Press Dumplings Mold DIY Empanadas Ravioli Mould Baking Tools

My mom showed me one of these not on Ali for twice or triple the price, so I got her this for Christmas. Load up the crimping panels with your dumpling "skin" and filling of choice, lightly wet the edges, press down on the plunger, et voilà, two dumplings ready to be cooked. She and my dad made a big batch of pierogi that were as good as any my babcia ever made, according to my very exacting dad, and it was a lot easier on my mom's arthritic hands. Great for just about any cuisine's representative dumpling.

I also picked up some decent :airquote: gold earrings for a few bucks a pair and boring stuff like a long, flexible, stiff-bristled brush to clean out the dryer-lint port. All in all, a good haul this time around.
