Guy buys a totaled GT3 for about $160k and tries to DIY the repairs. In the 3rd video they're just starting to address the actual structural damage.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aluFVHFjp2U

I was thinking about doing something similar, just with a Cayman or a more pedestrian 911. You can get a nice unscratched one and then worry about driving and polishing it, or something that's already been wrecked or had an engine blow up or something and just send it.

Curious how it works out for a GT3. It's one thing to cobble together a Cayman for like $15k and drive it into the ground, it's another to get wrecked GT3 for ten times as much and then be stuck with a six-figure car that a prospective buyer will want to examine under a microscope before buying.

He's also doing up a Gallardo he bought of a track day company that had sat for years... The nice thing about Mat is that he actually churns out the content and gets a ton done in each video. No milking a car project endlessly.

I'd never seen his channel before. He looks good and solid. It's a shame he had to sear himself with the taint of Tavarish and Samcrac.

Yeah I watched one of his videos about ancient wrecked M5 but couldn’t stand his video style. Also he seemed like he didn’t know what he was doing? But maybe that’s part of it?

The style seems reasonably inoffensive, but that's obviously suggestive. As for not knowing what he's doing...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JKqh68-UNQ&t=935s

so seems a realistic preview of what would happen if I tried it :v:

E: watched through the rest of the Cayman series because, as I mentioned, I was thinking of doing something similar. The total cost including the 18k car was ~45k gbp. It does include some dumb upgrades like CF and the wing. Still there are a bunch of Caymans below 50k which haven't been hacked together by an amateur that I'd rather get instead. And of course this cost doesn't include the garage space or the time which had to be a lot, so I don't think that's exactly the path to success.

E2: Lol the Murcielago lifehack of ordering Ferrari valve shims to save money. Same for the head bolt tool.

One downside with his channel is that the audience seems almost entirely non-technical and the comments just jerk him off for being inspirational and what not vs something like robot cantina where everyone is nerding out with suggestions like

quote:

I would suggest advancing your injection timing. EGT is based on how much fuel is still burning as it leaves the cylinder (wasted). So maybe advance the injection, and ESPECIALLY copy the work of SPEED OF AIR when they dimpled the pistons. Their patent says it strengthens the boundary layer on the piston, and improves flame front travel throughout the air/ fuel mix.

Lots of good stuff here. There's a nice sponsor-tier aside from Jay around 17m where he makes the claim Michelin makes the roundest tires. He claims his techs have to apply fewer weights when wheels are balanced with Michelins vs. any other brand. Jay has had a few tires mounted in his lifetime so it's an interesting claim for sure.

Also if I twittered I would try twittering him a message that Tire Rack still offers tire shaving. Have used it myself.

Michelin themselves claim that their tires are so well balanced from the factory that they don't come with a mark for the heavy point anymore at least.

This isn’t automotive, but it is vintage machinery - I was following the tow of the Keewatin today and found this channel while looking for video of it. A drone operator has been filming ships passing Port Huron on the St. Clair River where it meets Lake Huron. There’s hundreds of videos.

The Great Lakes have some of the oldest cargo ships still operating commercially in the world, as old as the 40s, some still steam powered.

Keewatin, built 1907. Museum ship that is being relocated.

Anecdotally, however, my wife's Yoko all-seasons and my all-terrains feel way loving smoother and quieter than Michelin's stiff-rear end, loud-rear end "sport touring" tires ever were, so maybe roundness isn't everything Michelin.

Maybe stick to rating restaurants or something.
