I seriously can't believe literally the only moves the Packers are making are on special teams. Guess the draft will be purely offense/defense with no specialists.

I think they can’t really do much until the Rodgers situation is figured out and special teams guys are usually the cheapest So it’s the only option right now.

I'm way more satisfied with Claypool as a #3 instead of being #2 last year. Everyone knew the FA market and draft pool for wide receivers this off-season would be really weak, so the value of even halfway -decent WRs sky-rocketed. The only way the Bears were gonna get any help at that position was by overpaying, but they've got the draft capital and cap space, so I don't mind.

https://twitter.com/PatMcAfeeShow/status/1637079398774984706

Despite all his words about how the Packers have zero leverage, the facts of the matter remain:
  • The Packers have their quarterback.
  • The Jets do not.
  • All other veteran starter-caliber QBs are off the market. To get a QB not named Aaron Rodgers, the Jets are paying multiple firsts to move up to #3, multiple firsts to Baltimore, or they're running it back with Zach Wilson.
  • Aaron Rodgers has committed to the Jets.
  • The Douglas-Saleh combination is 11-23 with two consecutive last-place divisional finishes. Missing on a QB after letting all their other options go off the market is a fireable offense.

I know the Rams walked it back, but I don’t think it’s unrealistic to imagine the Jets negotiating over Stafford for a more reasonable deal if LA is willing.

From Tom Silverstein: https://www.packersnews.com/story/s...rs/70014005007/

quote:

So, what is Rodgers’ trade value?

We asked four current personnel executives from four different NFL teams what they thought the compensation should be for Rodgers. We agreed not to use their names because they are not authorized to talk about personnel matters of players not on their team.
  • 'The Jets need to do something to make him (Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst) want to move faster'
    • Personnel director No. 1: “My initial thought was a second- or third-round pick in 2023 with a 2024 pick tied to whether or not Aaron decides to play a second season. However, the Packers have all the cards now because it appears they didn’t have a deal agreed to before the Jets flew to California to meet with Aaron. And now if the Jets don’t finish the deal, well, you can imagine what the New York press will do. So, I’m guessing Brian knows this and the price has gone up to maybe a first this year and another pick as well because really he has all the leverage. And he’s not inclined to really trade him before June 1 anyways, so the Jets need to do something to make him want to move faster. Of course, Aaron could just start showing up to Lambeau like Brett (Favre) did to make it awkward and move things along, which I’m sure he’d do if needed. It will be fascinating to see what happens. It’s a pretty unprecedented deal really other than you know, when the Packers traded Brett to the Jets.”

  • 'If I’m the Packers, I’d want that first and some more ... this whole ordeal and situation is nuts'
    • Personnel director No. 2: “I’ve been wondering what the compensation package will be myself. If I’m the Packers, I’d want that first and some more, but I really don’t think the Packers can get it without paying down Rodgers’ salary. I heard initially the Packers were using the (Russell) Wilson trade as rough parameters, which kind of makes sense, and then bump it down some for age and contract. So, assuming they aren’t going to pay down that salary, next year’s first or this year’s second, and then (receiver) Elijah Moore and a tight end and an edge player. Either way, this whole ordeal and situation is nuts. Couldn’t imagine being in one of those front offices.”

  • 'It seems like Green Bay has the leverage now. Jets really have no other choice'
    • Personnel director No. 3: “I mean Rodgers did them no favors - If I'm GB I'm trying to get a one and maybe a pick in '24 that can move up based on how they do as a team this year. Maybe it’s a two this year and a pick that can move up to a one next year based on if they make the playoffs. It's a unique situation for sure. It seems like Green Bay has the leverage now. Jets really have no other choice.”

  • 'It all comes down to picks and money'
    • Personnel director No. 4: “I think it all comes down to picks and money. If no money is exchanged (Packers paying part of the $58.3 million), it’s a third-round pick. For a certain level of money exchanged, it’s a second. There’s too much money involved in this deal for an exchange of a first. I haven’t really thought about players, picks and money (being traded). But usually when big money is involved it’s equated to money (the Packers would be willing to pay) and draft picks.”

The “NY media will be a bloodbath if the deal falls through” take is the weirdest bit of homerism. I live in NJ and best I can tell, most folks are viewing it with skepticism because Rodgers is clearly old and busted.

from a athletic piece of free agency value which ranked the NFL teams in how much they spent in free agency from 2020-2022 vs. the AV of the players they obtained and like we all know the packers dont spent any money but the dropoff there between #31 and #32 is pretty hilarious.

quote:

The Packers have been the least active team in free agency over the past three seasons, spending by far the least amount of cash on free agents at $18.9 million. No other team has spent less than $51.5 million, which is pretty stark evidence of how the Packers have gone about building their rosters in recent seasons

They also ranked how much value you get per million spent and the packers (and most of the NFC North actually) did really well. Packers number is basically all De'Vondre Campbell.

It'd be a weird one year bump that would move the packers up.. but if you stretch it back to say 2018-2017 they'd fall back to last place. Amos contract was 36 million, Preston's was 52 million and ZaDarius was 51 million.

I don't think a non-Packers non-Jets executive commenting on the situation really qualifies as homering? But if the Jets miss on Rodgers and then miss the playoffs again this season due to bad QB play, that's not great for their job stability.

I'd rather have Moore than a 2025 1st round pick. If it's a 2023, that's maybe a different story. Supposedly the Packers offered a 1st for Moore and it was turned down. Moore is a really good receiver and while not in that top tier of WR1 (Hill, Jefferson, etc), he's definitely a WR1 in the NFL and only 25.

The Claypool trade was horrendous though and the Bears deserve to be laughed at for it. But the return they got for the #1 pick is surprisingly good.

Im not defending the claypool trade here, but hes gonna be a hell of a lot better than pringle or some of the other guys they rolled out at the end of the year. The bears really should have insisted on the ravens pick they just got. It would have been more palatable. It shoulda been a 3rd.

Overall, claypool needs a full training camp and familiarization with the offense. He needs to build a rapport with Fields. He's not a seasoned veteran that can just pick up whatever he has to wherever he goes. Hes still on his rookie contract.

I kind of wonder what Claypool's value would be if we tried to trade him again right now. One would assume nobody would give up anything worthwhile for him after a dud season with one year left under contract, but if the asking price for Jerry Jeudy is a first rounder, maybe the WR market is still wonky and you could blame his down year on general Bears stink to recoup a third or something

It's probably smarter to just keep him and see if Fields connects with him during training camp at this point, but it is a bummer that the trade basically broke as badly as it possibly could have to this point

Parallelwoody
Apr 10, 2008

If the Claypool has some potential I think it's fair to give him at least one offseason to work with a young QB that had a line consisting of "thoughts and prayers" scrawled in feces on wet cardboard to protect him before calling it a bad trade. Seems pretty difficult to make something happen when the guy throwing you the ball is running for his life every play, and you aren't going to have built up that chemistry to know each other's tendencies when poo poo hits the fan to bail out of busted plays.
