Remember when Simcity (2013) came out? It tracked every citizen in your city as they went to work, went to stores, went to the bar, were in traffic etc. You could watch them. Except they would sometimes disappear and reappear but I mean that's fine. It was online only because it needed the power of the cloud to work and run the simulation. Except later people realized you could sever the connection by blocking it and the game was the same, and the whole thing was a lie. And there was no simulation, it was just bad scripted go to work, come back from work. And people disppeared.

I don't know why that just popped in my brain when reading this story :iiam:

So much worse than that. There were "agents" for humans, poop, water and power that would go from the building they started at to the closest building with a need. Power would flow from the power plant to the closest buildings and spread until it sent out all its agents. Sounds fine until you get to humans. If you have a low education neighborhood next to the nuclear power plant, despite having tons of high ed citizens in the town, the low education ones would go to the closest job (power plant) and cause a meltdown.

I remember the kill-shot for me on Simcity 2013 was when someone figured out that the best, most efficient city design was to just build one giant spiral road starting from the center with no intersections whatsoever.

That was because every day at dawn every single inhabitant in the city would go into their car and drive to the nearest free workplace. If someone got there first they would go to the next closest one, repeat until they got to one first. Then after a finished work day they would get in their cars and then repeat the exact same process with a place of residence. They would do this every day.

Sounds correct. Homer Simpson lives next to the power plant. At least in the Stonecutters episode.

Lol, game still hasn't come out.

Actually it's out and it's the greatest game of all time. Yesterday I went to an ice planet, couldn't find the place I was trying to go for a mission, then got bored logged out in my ship's bed. When I logged back in later I was floating in the middle of space without my ship. Clearly I was kidnapped by space pirates while logged off and went on an hours long adventure culminating in me being stranded in the middle of space. I can only imagine how much fun I had.

Oh god, if the persistent universe does/is an actual thing, I can just imagine the trolling potention if, say, pirates attack a ship and just keep killing the captain over and over again flooding the ship with their bodies before leaving the derelect husk of a ship to its captain, who now has to deal with the tons of bodies.

What I'm trying to get at is that a persistent universe is dumb.

Nothing kills a game for me faster than "your player character, item, base, vehicles, etc are still online even when you're not."

Yes I love the prospect of being easily griefable because I don't have the time or desire to completely nolife a game.

That's just a Viscera Cleanup Detail minigame. That's right, Star Citizen is so vast its emergent gameplay involves entire other games.

Kings need not raise their voices to be heard

Everything is broken and I'm glad posted:

When was the last time CIG pushed put a patch this large that caused the game to be unplayable? Its been years

People are bitching about not being able to play the game but pay zero attention to the fact that these bugs are here because CIG pushed out a patch with so much content. Thats what I'm excited for. I don't give a poo poo if I can't play the game for a few days if it means the overall progress takes a big step forward. Start looking at the big picture. SC isn't your life. If a buggy patch that will be fixed gets you riled up to the point you lose all reason, maybe its time to take a break and step outside. The amount of data they'll gather from essentially what was a DOS attack from so many people trying to log on and seeing how the patch itself reacts will be invaluable. So I'm personally happy it broke as it shows them what to fix

How can we lose so much more than we had before

On Friday, Diablo IV put their open beta live and the game was kind of a mess. Login queues, people getting disconnected, people getting booted and their characters getting deleted. By Sunday all the issues were basically fixed.

Star Citizen is still unplayable.

But guys they put a patch live, there's no way anything would have been remotely functional on an in development game for a significant period of time.

Apparently their last sale made 42% than the one the year before. How are citizens reacting to this news?

quote:

To their credit, they held when it was at its worst. This is conducive to thinking about your players, it is not conducive to making money.

They can't win though. They get demonized no matter what choice they make.

Guys, CIG cares. They're not in it for the money.

Kings need not raise their voices to be heard

A picture is worth a thousand words. PES in a nutshell posted:

This is so awesome, I can't even explain how giddy it makes me. All of these cans and even a gown are from other players...tossed into the trash. I tossed about 5 more cans in there that were left on the floor.

It's representative of everything we will be able to do in the future. Extrapolate this out to setting up camp somewhere hidden and undiscovered. Just awesome. I was on for 3 hours with only a few issues such as no comms and laggy ASOP. But everything else ran great. So smooth as well!

What’s all the content that’s loaded into this huge patch again? Is there anything of note other that PES? That barely seems like content frankly, even if it actually leads to some interesting interactions, which is unlikely for anyone but griefers and people who like picking up litter.

i mean , i get some of these peoples enthusiasm

i too used to follow 'the next big thing' game coming out, and read all the articles, forums, pour over screenshots of it, and get really interested in the finer details

however i eventually

A) Grew up

B) noticed all game companies lie, or at least they don't tell the truth entirely when marketing their game

C) Steam came out, and you no longer had to pour over some lovely games website, you could just download 100 over games and play those while you waited

I like the persisted stuff because every apartment bloc is full of discarded gowns and every spaceport is overflowing with empty cans and bottles and it shows you how much people give a poo poo. I took one of the gowns I saw lying on the ground and spitefully threw it off the ledge of the cloud city planet into the abyss, polluting forever that dumb air whale poo poo. I hope it gets caught in their fins.

Oblivion was the release that broke me out of the same pattern. I spent years up to the release dreaming about how great it was going to be. Imagine Morrowind, but more, bigger, with real live AI!

I still liked oblivion well enough, but I’ve never been hyped for a game like that again.

Of course Crobbler still managed to get my $65 just after the kickstarter. Maybe we never learn

I just let other people take the risk of preordering and Kickstarting stuff and just buy the stuff I know it's great. Preferably on discount.

So I'll wait for a 42% discount on them Idrisses before buying a couple

Last game I ever followed heavily before release (and got on day 1)was Diablo 3 and we all know how that went. And yet that Game has paid for all my Blizzard games from then on and a trip to Las Vegas of all places.
