As the fighting for Bakhmut gets fiercer by the day, some people in nearby settlements still refuse to evacuate their homes. Their situation is extremely precarious, but they often can't leave behind animals or feel insecure about relocating to somewhere unfamiliar. They are also almost all pensioners. This is an article about the people who still live in Tsasiv Jar, just 4 km from the frontline. Check the link to see pictures and video on how the small town has fared.

Author: Antti Kuronen
Release date: 16.03.23
Link to untranslated article: https://yle.fi/a/74-20022645

quote:

Yle's Antti Kuronen met the elderly people who persevere near Bahmut's front line in Ukraine - Tatjana doesn't want to leave her dogs, cats and cows

Relatives can order evacuation help from organizations for their loved ones left in the war zone, but many do not want to leave.

Description of video: Tatjana is standing by the community well, as artillery fire can be heard in the background. She says that most of the time it is worse, and you can recognize the rockets by their whistling. Cut to the Journalist Kuronen who stands in what may have once been a park, clearly uncomfortable, saying that the artillery fire is basically non-stop. The Ukrainian army has positions nearby, and there is a lot of outgoing fire. He then mentions that there is quite a lot of incoming fire as well as he indicates the huge crater behind him. Tsasiv Jar is the next city from Bakhmut, and is situated just a few kilometers away. Cut away to a group of mainly elderly people collecting water, then one of them, Konstantin explaining that the artillery fire was heavy that day. He says that the Russians fired a cluster bomb at the railway crossing, where one person died.

TŠASIV JAR The thunder of war is near. The Bakhmut front line is only four kilometers from here.

Still, Tatjana and Aleh calmly draw water from the well in the center of the small town of Chasiv Yar. The couple has a trailer full of water tanks.

- We have dogs, cats and ten cows. We can't leave them, says Tatjana.

The Ukrainian defense forces fire on the Russians from the edge of the city. Russian projectiles are also hitting the city center, where a small number of residents are still holding out.

Almost everyone you meet on the street has reached retirement age.

- There is no water, gas or heat. There is constant firing here. But what can you do?, says Tatjana.

Earlier in the morning, a Russian cluster bomb killed a man at a railroad crossing right near the city center.

The authorities would like everyone to leave frontline settlements like Chasiv Yar, but there are always residents who refuse.

There are many reasons. Tatjana and her husband Aleh point out their animals.

Others plead that they have nowhere to go, even though authorities and organizations are organizing evacuations to different cities. Refugees are accommodated there as best they can.

Many can't even say why they stayed. The trauma of war acts as a barrier to leaving for a safer place.

Tatjana no longer reacts to explosions

A loud explosion is heard nearby. It doesn't bother Tatiana.

- Normal, she says.

There is often more gunfire during the nights. Then the couple hide in the basement of their house.

- If you can even call it a basement, grunts Aleh.

Since last summer, Russia has been trying to capture the city of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.

Russia has sacrificed a huge amount of crew and military equipment to the operation. Still, Bakhmut is in Ukrainian hands.

The city of Bakhmut is practically the front line, and no one but soldiers can go there. The entrance route is very dangerous.

The neighboring settlement of Chasiv Jari can still be reached via a couple of roads.

There are almost no families with children left in Chasiv Jar. Tatjana assures that everyone has left.

Tatjana and Aleh's children are already adults and elsewhere.

Humanitarian aid is brought to frontline settlements. Bread and food are distributed in downtown buildings.

Humanitarian aid is essential, but it also makes evacuations more difficult.

- We'll be fine. We get food aid and fetch water from the well.

Despite the food aid, life in Chasiv Jar is dangerous. Tatjana and Aleh talk about acquaintances who have died in the Russian attacks.

- They sat at home and died from shrapnel while sitting in their armchairs. It hurts, says Aleh.

Relatives order evacuations for the elderly in the war zone

For the past couple of months, Russian forces have been approaching Chasiv Yar. The Russians are besieging the city of Bakhmut from three directions.

Ukraine's defense has still held and the attack has been very difficult for the Russian forces.

Ukrainian defenders are also killed and wounded a lot. According to the Ukrainian leadership, this is a decisive defensive battle that cannot be lost before the promised counterattack in the spring.

Probably overdosed on copium or having withdrawls from lack of copium.

Actually that's unlikely as I think copium is the only stockpile still left in the Russian Federation after Xi ate the strategic fried chicken reserves.

If making a replacement for SWIFT was easy, someone would have done it by now.

This however is just another bad faith proposal:

If the West agrees - excellent! The precedent has now been set that sanctions can be loosened if we apply pressure indirectly, by threatening to hurt non-Western countries. Now lets see if we can repeat this victory in other areas and cause sanctions to collapse more fully - for example, getting 'independent' German businessmen or Hungarian Prime Ministers to push for more sanctions to be loosened. Or maybe just abuse the system by using it to transfer money for weapons trades labelled as 'grain sales'.

And if the West disagrees? No problem, we expected them to! But the fact we have publicised this, creates material for our propaganda in Africa and Asia to use! Maybe we can unravel the grain deal and blame the West for it, for being unreasonable. Or just threaten to do so and see what happens. Regardless of what we do, a bunch of wise African and Indian commentators will nod seriously and sagely as we express disbelief at "How could the US do this?"

The best strategy is for the West to just ignore this. Russia has a history of making proposals that aren't intended to resolve or progress an issue, but just to hurt/divide their opponents or make them look bad to naive onlookers - going back at least as far as the Stalin Note and the like.
