The best part about that was Dave and Bryan not catching the simple part where Paul gets up off the table as Seth is climbing then redirects his jump. So they were both right in a way. Just arguing past each other.

Whatever system most podcast feeds use to automate ads is janky as gently caress in general. On most ad-supported shows I usually get ad breaks with 3-4 ads each except it’s usually 1 or both ads played twice, and every single ad break is the same ads anyway.

Once I got a Spanish language ad that sounded like it was recruitment for the military or the police or something. I am in the UK.

Do podcasters get more money for ad reads they do in their own voice? I always assumed they would because it's harder to tell that it's a commercial and you might accidentally listen to 10 seconds of an ad before hitting the +30s button.

It seems like they would but then you also have to weigh up the fact they might be advertising poo poo that some of their audience couldn’t buy even if they wanted to for geographical reasons (like the boner pills 90% of wrestlers shill, or the various meal prep companies), so maybe it’s offset somewhat by advertisers paying more to get actually relevant ads slotted in instead?

I actually have heard podcasts before doing market specific ad-reads so maybe there’s a combined option that pays the most? Like my wife listens to one by two women who were on the US version of The Office and most episodes seem to start with a specific ad read by the hosts “for our UK listeners” which has to be an automated insert because it would be insane if they somehow had a bigger audience here than in the states.

One of the goons with a podcast can probably give a definitive answer.

Something I've listened to (Accidental Tech Podcast, maybe?) has talked about it and says ad-reads they do themself lead to more impressions than generic ads, so it would make sense that they pay more, too. How much more, I don't know, but I assume it's enough to make up for the extra effort of recording and editing an ad.

Yeah, podcast servers can detect the downloader's location and insert location-specific ads, which will certainly pay more than a generic ad. This was particularly funny when I was in Italy and my app downloaded some podcasts which injected ads in Italian. This is only really on large podcast networks, though. Someone's self-hosted podcast won't do this.

Anyway, I ordered some Sherry's Berries for my mom for Mother's Day one year thanks to Stone Cold's ad reads, so I guess they work. (I don't think I used his code, just remembered the company.)

This could be the most one-sided fight since 1973 when Ali faced an eighty-foot tall mechanical Joe Frazier. My memory isn't what it used to be, but I think the entire Earth was destroyed.

Host reads read by the podcasts hosts themselves are generally more expensive than preproduced spots utilizing generic VO talent, yes. Depending on the size of the show and the network their in or ad server they use, podcasts can either be “baked in” voice reads which means they are a part of the podcast audio file itself and will be heard in perpetuity anytime someone listens to the ad, dynamically inserted host reads which means that the host voices the spot but that it is only being served to specific demos for a specific timeframe or number of total impressions. Dynamically inserted ads also run on a rotation, so one ad may only be served to a certain percentage of the listeners within the demo. They also do dynamically inserted studio ads, which is the same idea but it’s a preproduced radio spot slotted in like a commercial break instead of a host read.

Yes the live read CPM rate is higher than automated for this reason.

Some of this are the podcasters but a lot of it is the automated system. At least when Everything Elite was an ongoing concern, we told the system that we didn’t want any guns, politics or snake oil as the automation. Problem is that the system is also reliant on the advertisers to be honest and label the ads correctly. Then when you download the show the system tries to geolocate you with the IP of the download. We randomly once had western Canadian far right politicians in our show somehow and that pretty much led us to never use that system anymore and do away with those ads.

Thanks for the replies everyone, that's pretty interesting stuff. I always figured that advertisers had to pay more for people reading the ads since it's not quite as immediate of a skip as when you hear someone not from the podcast talking but never knew for sure.

Funnily enough I’ve had the opposite problem of this before. I work on the ad agency side and was placing podcast ads for a large national client. We were supposed to run in a network of podcasts in the health and lifestyle genre. However the genre of the podcast is left up to the person creating the show meaning that some of our ads ran in straight up porno podcasts with names like “Cock Tales”.

The podcast ad space is definitely jank as gently caress, but it’s a newish place to advertise so everyone wants to be in it whether it makes sense for them or not.
