Not that I really blame people for accepting money from trash companies. We all gotta live in this dumpsterfire world, no ethical consumption, etc.

Its also almost always a very good looking woman in a well appointed house saying something like "this is how we do this recipe around here".

Its an affront on all levels because:

Internet hates women
Internet hates rich people
Internet hates fake confidence
Internet loves arguing over ideas of "authenticity"

And they do the children's algorithm thing of slow build up to inevitable weird pay-off.

Well, this was how I heard it, and I stand by it, because it encompasses everything that everyone else is saying but wraps a neat bow on it:

It IS the children's algorithm thing. But not just for children. The way I heard it, he basically hit on this formula that "The Algorithm" really liked. These videos are really viral, and jump to the top of all the suggestions etc, but that was the thing, in the interview I read, he said he didn't really know why. He didn't know who his audience actually was. So, yeah, fetishists, hate watchers, edgers, clickbait followers. Just all of them, in this perfect Venn diagram, all hit on these types of video.

But to me, that was more cursed than any of the other explanations. Like a sacrifice to a vengeful god, if they don't make these weird poo poo videos that The Algorithm™ likes, then they all stop getting money. And no human knows why. Even if it turns out to just be majority fetishist or majority hate watchers or whatever, doesn't really matter, this is without any doubt the shape of things to come, where lots of human people do things for money without understanding why those things make money or who wants them.

It's something that we're struggling with in my job, trying to define audiences. Because, you can do it like "People who like sport" and just group together people that like sport, sure. But, there's no insight there. But what about correlations between specific different TV shows? Like, if there's some group that's actually clearly defined that likes A question of sport, Antiques Roadshow and Rick and Morty. If you can identify that THAT is a specific audience, you can advertise directly to them, you can create content specifically for them, etc. And with AI, we've identified a bunch of these groups! Cool!

But! How the gently caress do you talk about them. How do you actually USE that info? It's basically impossible. It would be essentially impossible (For a human) to tell if content / ads targeted at them was successful! But the AI can do it! The AI doesn't need to be able to give them meaningful names, and it has no problem identifying trends among them. So we're gonna get way more of this sort of thing going on. Stuff that literally no-one can see the point of, but that is somehow hugely popular.

Think of it like this, if you like A, B and C, and I like D, E and C, and someone else likes F, G and C, in that order, then clearly, C has the broadest appeal, even though non of us would say it's our favourite. But with a lot of things (like memes) there's about 100 things that come before C. Such that no one would even think it's something they rate highly. But that enough people share as a common 100th that an algorithm can find it and go "That poo poo thing actually has the broadest appeal". It's gonna be really cool when this approach makes tons of money and you see it everywhere!

It's okay if you have any questions.

Hacker News is the most cursed site on the entire internet:

quote:

I’m all for holding companies that have supported dangerous regimes to account. However, when it comes to data management, totalitarian regimes rarely indicate inadequate implementation. IBM’s role in Germany in the 40s was horrific, but it proved their ideas of tabulations and files were promising. Just like with rocketry, there were many valuable things to learn that defined the rest of the XXth century.
The FSB likely has a lot of crimes to atone for. Still, suppose one of their specialists publishes something on data management or how to manage hundreds of sock-puppet social media accounts. In that case, I’d be tempted to listen and learn from a likely expert—unless you suspect that they think this article is not sincere and meant as a distraction from actual good practices.
Similarly, the CIA has done very problematic things, but the people who worked in the disguise department have a creative take on changing your appearance. I’m unsure when I would have to do that, but I’m always curious about how data is stored efficiently. And yes, like the FSB, the NSA has opinions about that, and those are typically well-informed.
Was their practice constitutional? Seemingly not, IANAL. But do they have good insights into caching video files at scale? Definitely.
