Hello Tomorrow has gorgeous dialogue. It took a few episodes to get there for me, but I've fallen into a groove with it and now I really, really enjoy it. There are scenes here and there that feel like they've wandered out of Avenue 5, and others like they're out of Mad Men. I really want it to work its grove out and be excellent in everything it does, but in terms of casting, characterization and language it's created a really interesting, peculiar world.

My favourite characters are the psychopathic grifter couple who genuinely think they're neither of those things. There's also a really cute mismatched romantic couple on the villain's side that I've grown to weirdly root for. It's become a genuinely good show, IMO.

Shrinking had a really good episode a few weeks ago, and then I just stopped watching it. I'll get back to it soon, but it's way more of a drama than a comedy.

4 days late, but I'm watching this video, and it apparently is. Here is Jordan Peele talking about the George Floyd protests, and how Hollywood has typically left black people out of the medium.

Yeah I’ve really been enjoying season 3. And I’m someone who loving haaaaated seasons 1 & 2.

If you’re enjoying season 3, don’t make the mistake of dropping into the TVIV Trek thread. They seem to hate it. Maybe it’s made for the filthy casual Trek fan and not the hardcore Trekkie, but I’m having fun.

Season 3 of Picard is poo poo from a butt, but is still better than s1 because memberberries are reading the dumb dialogue instead of just nothing but extras from Star Wars. I mean, they still have that poo poo too, they just ponied up to get actual cast members after two seasons.

I think any thoughtful piece of media made by someone who grows up black in America will, as a matter of course, have something to say about racism, even accidentally

I cant remember where I read this take, but it was something like: Nope is about a big white thing in the sky that kills a black man in the film industry by (literally) showering him with money. It definitely reads as an allegory for the entertainment industry as a whole.

This reminds me of the scene in Get Out where he resists the recorded hypnosis by literally "picking cotton" out of the chair and stuffing it in his ears, aka it fits right in with how I see Peele operating

Secretly force socialism, communism and imperialism types of government onto the people of the United States of America.

S3 of Picard is leaps and bounds better than the first two seasons, but that is an extremely low bar to clear, and in spite of that, it only does so just barely. Plus we're just halfway through the season, so it remains to be seen whether or not it will absolutely poo poo the bed in the next few episodes.

Would I need to watch the first two seasons of Picard or could I drive right in to season 3? This is not something I'd ever normally consider but I've heard so many bad things about this series.

I mean I'd take the director's word over a goon's when it comes to what the movie is about :

Jordan Peele, in a behind the scenes documentary about Nope posted:

This film is about many things, I think the soul of the film is about a representation in itself. This movie’s not about race, although obviously race does interact with this idea of spectacle-lization and exploitation

It's not specifically an allegory about race. Being black in Hollywood is A Thing in the movie but it's not specifically what it's about.

No, they barely reference the first two seasons at all even though season 2 involved time travel and resulted in Allison Pill becoming the leader of a newer, kinder Borg who asked to become part of the Federation, and only brought back one of the new characters who you do not need to know any of her backstory. They don't even mention that Picard died at the end of season 1, and is now using a synthetic body with his memories transferred.

Season 3 is still really bad, despite that other goon's recommendation.

Watch Stewart in a recent interview. He’s purposely playing Picard as older than he is in real life, it’s a conscious decision. This was really apparent in season 1 especially, to the point where Stewart is in record as regretting the extent to which he did it.

Other than maybe the Anson Mount version of Pike who I think could fit on older, good Trek pretty much all the new characters from the Paramount+ trek shows are unfortunately highly annoying and bad so it makes sense that they would have to bring back all the TNG people. Not enough DS9 folks have been on Picard though.

The viewer reaction to the new live action Treks is pretty interesting, because it seems like the exact same thing every single time:

Episodes 1-2: Yay New Star Trek! This is good start to the season, but I'm not sure what the plot is.
Episodes 3-4: This is still pretty good. The plot seems to be taking a while to get going though.
Episodes 5-6: Well that was a lot of wheel spinning, but now that we know the main plot, I think the rest of the season is going to be great!
Episodes 7-8: Seriously, GET ON WITH IT!
Episode 9: They can't be loving serious. That's where they are going with it???
Episode 10: This is the stupidest loving poo poo I have ever watched, and I hate myself that I watched all of it. Maybe the new season of _____ will be good.

Season 3 of Picard has all the same fatal writing and production flaws as the first two seasons, only this time they’ve filled it with enough references and old characters that every fan’s too busy clapping and hoping for spin-offs to notice.

Even worse, Picard is now mining DS9 and the TOS movies for ideas and making GBS threads out inferior versions of them because the new showrunner fundamentally does not understand what made them memorable beyond a surface level.

The only good parts of S3 have been the ships and the soundtrack, the latter of which has mostly just been recomposed versions of older scores.

I finally caught up with Nope and enjoyed it a lot. Having said that, there's some odd decisions in what is in the film and what is left out, such that you're inclined to try and look for meanings or reasons behind those decisions.
