For a shonen series that has been running more than 20 years I think One Piece has managed it's power curve pretty well.

It's called the "power treadmill", in which shonen franchises and authors can't think of any way to keep raising the stakes besides making the next villain more powerful than the last, requiring the protagonist to surpass their old limits until everyone is firing lazers and blowing up mountains

Jojo manages to avoid this by shifting to new protagonists and villains that are weaker than the previous ones yet making the smaller stakes seem higher by making them more personal, as opposed to threatening to destroy/conquer the world again

Kars threaten to conquer the world. Dio threatened to conquer the world. Diavolo probably didn't want to conquer the world and Pucchi straight up blew up the universe. The president made a super power to make all misfortune happen to other countries to ensure American dominance on the world. Only ones that really kept it was Part 4 and Jojolion.

Personally never got that into Hunter Hunter. Idk it just wasn't my cup of tea. I came back during the election arc and I just bounced hard.

Yes, Kars was the villain of part 2, which is when Araki stepped away from the power treadmill because Dio was certainly less powerful, and uh, still couldn't be exposed to light.

one piece has played around with power levels eniel was more powerful than most of the villains that came after and he had to be completely removed from the plot by putting him on the moon becasue no one but luffy and his rubber abilities could beat him

One Piece played with crew dynamics and while there were heavy hitters in fights they all had their own thing that only they could do. Unfortunately, I think that was lost after the time skip and the crew have taken the backseat to story arc characters and what kind of new powerful punch Luffy can do this week. He caught the Goku, unfortunately.

It still does a heroic job of making every crew member play important roles and make contributions in a way that DBZ lost basically once it added the “Z”. Like even Ussop and Nami are giving more to do than Krillin who gets to maybe kick a guy who literally doesn’t matter every hundred chapters. Even then, 600 chapters before really* getting on the power level treadmill is pretty drat impressive.

* (honestly I barely count gears 2 and 3 which are more about interesting use of the main characters powerset than just “I discovered a new power tier in my heart”)

I'm willing to cut OP some slack in that regard because the series is pretty clearly getting into the endgame now. Busting out literal godlike power makes a lot more sense when you're in the home stretch.

Superman has changed and grown as a person after they exited the hard status quo bubble in the 70s, but he's still very much the same dude as the heroic ideal hasn't changed much in the past 80 years. I'll concede that I only have a general idea of what Superman does because I don't read comics and my only exposure is via animated appearances like movies or Young Justice so I dunno. I though his thing was being the optimistic hero who wants to see the best in people and wants to help whenever possible. More of a static character that doesn't really grow but causes people around him to grow.

But honestly, I don't know what most of the Justice League initial member's deals are. Batman maybe needs to learn to accept the help of every sidekick he's trained? Is that a thing? I'm not even totally confident on that one. And I'm less sure what lessons Flash, Green Arrow, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Wonder Woman, or Shazam! need to learn in the 80-40 years they'e existed.

Related to DBZ I see it's time for the latest round of 'TFS did a lot of harm to the fandom, actually.' As if they don't really really want you to watch the series if you came to it via DBZA first which has been known to happen. Heck, KaiserNeko wants you to watch Dragon Ball (and you should).

One Piece is so about power levels they invented Stupid Nen and invented a Double Super Grand Line at the end of the grand line where an even scarier and new tier of Bad Pirates exists at and you need a Triple Magic Compass to sail there when they started with the time skip where everyone got Goku Training Time.

Yeah, but it also leaves in a bit more room for flexibility in how the character's powers work: By taking the Jojo approach where almost every character has a single, unique power that their entire move set is based around and you have kind of an equal balance between the characters being able to take on tougher opponents because they've trained and become stronger and characters taking on tougher opponents because they've figured out more effective ways to utilize the powers they already have. The majority of Luffy's power increases over the course of the series have been the result of him figuring out new and novel ways to take advantage of being made of rubber.

yeah, when they're at the point where an ID4-style hidden-by-clouds UFO-thing loving annihilates an entire country with orbital bombardment you've kinda gotta make the main characters able to do more than shoot ketchup packets and do a really strong stretchy headbutt. like the entire point of the Sabaody Archipelago arc was "you happy-go-lucky idiots are entirely, utterly out of your league but you keep confidently stepping in the poo poo nonetheless"

I read the dbz manga and watched some stuff as a kid and never looked at it until during covid times where the new broly movie came out and I turned it on out of nostalgia. There are so many coloured hairs they transform to now what the hell. And goku is still a cruel god who would trap people in his personal arenas so he can fight them and be stronger later, but it's ok because he sounds like a silly grandma

They're finishing up Ash's time on the pokemon anime right now, actually. He finally became a champion, Team Rocket split up, they've announced completely new protagonists for the new season. Complete turnover is my understanding.

I think I've seen DBZA up to the end of Frieza, plus a few of the movies. It's the only DB/DBZ thing I've seen.

But it's not like the Abridged series has made it more or less likely to watch the originals because I was never going to do that anyway.

See, the obvious solution to the Strong Opponent Inflation problem is once your protagonist gets too powerful you have them get bored with what they're doing and pursue a new hobby. So once your shounen fighting protagonist has beaten the strongest martial artist in the world you then start having them train to be really good at needle point and they have to train to best the greatest needle-pointer in the world
