Their advertising operations are distinct from AWS, right? I believe advertising has been successful for them too.

Amazon used to be notorious for investing back into its infrastructure, which would be at the cost of retail business profitability. I'm not sure if that is still the excuse now. If e-commerce generally picks back up, the numbers might look better for that branch of the business.

I'd like to know how much burning money on stuff like Rings of Power and sinking money into Alexa devices also eroded the bottom line.

supposedly amazon's advertising business is actually kickbacks from amazon sellers

I've posted about it elsewhere but the Reaganites finally forcing Admiral Rickover out on a BS technicality while he was single-handedly holding the line against General Dynamics bilking the Navy for 9 figgies on cost overruns for the Los Angeles class hulls was the end of the beginning of the end of USN quality control.

The galleria mall in Buffalo is always busy because Canadians come there to shop, I imagine there's other malls near metro areas that have managed to stay alive for the same reason - not enough business to stay afloat from one population, but if it sits at the intersection of a few different large pops it might be enough to keep on trucking

Malls are still thriving in affluent bubbles where a single professional income can maintain a household. Places like that have people with the time and money to leisure shop.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Hills_Village
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ross_Park_Mall
Both of these places are in $$$$$$ areas and are doing great.

Everywhere else, they're pretty much dead.

I feel like I saw something along those lines.

A page or so ago people were talking about why Elon Musk is necessary for the stories the system tells to, and about, itself. Maintaining ships at sea has been a sailor's life literally since the Pharaoh commissioned warships made of reeds. Greek sailors used to have to drag their ships ashore on a beach each night and scrub them. Wooden ships of the line had to be rigorously maintained so the oak wouldn't rot. Hell, the reason they had to painstakingly scrub the decks was because otherwise they would become slick and incredibly dangerous. The work required with iron navies was all of that plus rust prevention. This is not new.

But if you are shrinking the state and allowing people to extract rent in a way that is obviously damaging, I suppose you need to tell a story of why that's not a problem and you don't need to change direction. A robot to scrub ships instead of simply having more bo's'ns in the beleaguered deck department is obviously the direction they'll go in because I think, on some level, ideologically they're locked in.

It's just another reason why the reasons they can't win a war with China are so deeply engrained into who they are and how they think. I seem to remember several of the Seventh Fleet's recent fatal accidents were because, by cutting sailors for the sake of efficiency, there are less people to stand watch and everyone is exhausted, all of the time. Combine those two things, and yeah what McKinsey promised would be some great benefit is actually causing real damage to the fleet.

e: Yep "Greensea Systems Inc. has been awarded a 2-year Phase 2 option period contract by the U.S. Naval Office of Naval Research to continue developing technology for autonomous hull cleaning vehicles. This is a continuation of the work Greensea has been doing since 2018 through the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program. While the first phase of the contract focused on designing the system, the second phase will focus on technologies that improve navigation and autonomy."

The american style enclosed shopping mall only ever existed due to accelerated depreciation schemes to encourage commercial concerns to move out of the cities and out to the artificial gated whites-only developments the government subsidized after WW2. That scheme went away in the late 80s and with that went almost all enclosed mall development

our hometown mall looks like it's thriving but the farther you go from the front entrance (which has a nice Target and Macy's) you can see the Rot set in. there's a whole hallway with failed popup shops and empty retail space. but that's also where you have to go to use the bathrooms and the family play area and it's so eerie lol

"Mall" is actually a contraction of "Them All", as in "Which stores did you say were in that building?" "Them All. Themall. The Mall."

Wasn't it envisioned by an Austrian Socialist or something who imagined it as an American market square?

yeah, Russia had stuff like the big GUM building in Moscow that I guess was essentially a mall before the mall. The ones we know in the US were entirely dependent on tax scams for new development to get places to locate out by the new whites-only country estates though. There just wasn't enough population density out in suburbia to get stuff like that built organically.

The downtowns of most North American cities already had market buildings, and high streets.
