The Roman Empire was great and powerful, it certainly wasn't full of backstabbing (in a few cases literally) politicians. The US was born from a perfect revolution against an unquestioning evil, and guaranteed rights for some. The great scientists of the past were amazing visionaries who discovered everything for themselves except that they were building off work of everyone else in most cases. Now you are faced down with "X did something? But they did all this bad stuff too!" Or "Y was discovered? But it took so long and so many people were involved!" because you are seeing the real effects firsthand.
