CNN had two TikTok influencers on last night to talk about the possible ban. One of them was hawking their vegan baby food book.

Reminded me why I am perfectly fine with a ban, regardless of data concerns.

I really haven't heard a good reason tiktok should be banned other than the boomeresque complaint that people don't like it. Every app on a Smartphone is a potential security risk and the government has a number of means to deal with tiktok short of a loving ban.

Stormfront, truth social, gab, 8chan, 4chan, etc etc all have a legal right to exist. The idea that tiktok doesn't is some smell test nonsense

One of my friends' preteen kids wanted to try tiktok a few years ago, so I was recruited by her mom to help her set it up on her phone since I was the "tech person" friend who "understood memes". We idly scrolled funny videos for about five minutes until the feed suddenly started spitting out sex workers posting advertisements and thirst traps.

I dunno if The Algorithm has gotten better since then, but my objection to TikTok is that poo poo kinda poo poo happening, and also the general format of TikTok making it very easy to Elsagate poo poo into videos.

Yeah I don't doubt it's an awful, addictive app that probably shouldn't be used by young children, but that's not the standard for what the government gets to censor. Just because both sides of the isle find it a convenient drum to beat doesn't mean this kind of governmental overreach should be tolerated or encouraged imo. The fact that it's being heralded as a tool of the pernicious Chinese really crystalizes what the real interests are here and it's about international politics and not protecting anybody.

Sure, and I'm not arguing that, I was just giving a "good reason" of my own. Even if The Algorithm has been cleaned up, it's still marketed towards kids and is extremely lax in moderating content unless it's pornographic, which is... not great!

I am not a fan of banning TikTok because for better or worse, posting content on there is how a lot of people put food on the table. It feels a lot like republicans screaming “kids need to get real jerbs!”

TikTok is great, not bad, because of how it shows me hot ladies inbetween videos of retro computer stuff and woodworkers showing me how to make better joints.

Sucks it lets people try to turn babies vegan or whatever. It should be regulated and moderated harder, not banned because of what screeching hawks have to say about the dangers of Chinese paratroopers knowing our location data.

NEW DELHI — Rahul Gandhi, one of the last national figures standing in political opposition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, was disqualified as a member of Parliament on Friday, sending shock waves across the country’s political scene and devastating the once-powerful Indian National Congress party Mr. Gandhi leads.

Mr. Gandhi was expelled from the lower house the day after a court in Gujarat, Mr. Modi’s home state, convicted him on a charge of criminal defamation. The charge stemmed from a comment he made on the campaign trail in 2019, characterizing Mr. Modi as one of a group of “thieves” named Modi — referring to two prominent fugitives with the same last name. Mr. Gandhi received a two-year prison sentence, the maximum. He is out on 30 days’ bail.

Any jail sentence of two years or more is supposed to result in automatic expulsion, but legal experts had expected Mr. Gandhi to have the chance to challenge his conviction. A notification signed by a parliamentary bureaucrat appointed by Mr. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday stated that Mr. Gandhi had been disqualified automatically by the conviction itself, per the Constitution of India.

With this, does India count as a proper democracy anymore?

The real problem is that "Social Media" encompasses most forms of online communication - chatrooms and forums were the first Social Medias, for example. Banning it would mean destroying at least half (and probably more) of the internet, and that's assuming there's no pushback or underground replacements.

Social Media is like combustible fuel: it's here to stay. The best we can do is try to keep the lead out of it.

The difference is that "social media" when most of SA's posters came of age lacked today's algorithms that weaponized the user experience. Forums, chat rooms, even things like MySpace and Facebook at its infancy were largely organized on shared interests; now, it's REAL easy for someone to be a fan of Call of Duty or whatever, seek out that content on Instagram/TikTok, get served up adjacent content like military stuff, which leads to guns, which can lead to some far-right stuff REAL easy. From there, it's not hard to find their way onto 4chan, etc. There's considerable crossover as well- look at the phrase "glowy" or "feds glow" as an example.

Also I think it's fair to be really skeptical about Chinese tech in general, especially when you consider how tightly they attempt to control the Chinese expatriate community in so many countries via coercion on family members, the "secret police stations" that have been discovered in so many countries...

It is totally fair, and while I try not to be all whatabout over things we just have absolutely no leg to stand on as long as law enforcement in the US is using social media to do far more harm to its citizens than Chinese intelligence ever could. This isn’t redirecting blame, it’s saying “if you mean it about wanting to help people avoid getting hurt then start here.”

I think McNally clarified but to add my own spin: Cops oftentimes will use the social media acconts of individuals they have arrested in order to arrange undercover buy/busts and other hosed up psuedo-undercover police tactics. They also use social media to keep tabs on invdividuals and groups they have decided are "high-risk" or "undesirable" and basically have free reign to conduct their own investigations using these methods.

It's definitely bad, and feeds into the idea that "big data" can help with policing, which is one of the loving worst ideas since Chemical Warfare.

Law enforcement leverages data obtained from social media all the time, one recent example is using Twitter and Facebook post and client location data to identify and prosecute people who attended J6.

They did the same thing with George Floyd protestors, only a lot more enthusiastically. Likewise the Stop Cop City protestors. USCBP also does this, as do state Intelligence Fusion Centers. Your state's Fusion Center has the capability to draw a circle on a map and have Twitter display tweets from everyone in its radius, this is how they track protest coordination. They buy that capability as a product from Twitter. There's something similar for Facebook.
