Yeah I’m sure it’s not good but heists are definitely a story/gameplay model D&D can do.

Isn't a heist just a dungeon crawl where you have to fight your way out instead of in? What's the problem?

You can obviously break into a place and steal stuff in D&D, but "heist movie" is a genre and D&D doesn't necessarily replicate its conventions all that well. Like, a lot of heist-based RPGs explicitly have a "flashback" mechanic where you can escape some obstacle on the way out by suddenly revealing that you already accounted for it.

I mean, D&D can absolutely do a certain kind of heist; in fact, doing heists is the very core and essence of it's being. It's just a very particular kind of heist called a "dungeon" rather than the kind of thing you usually see in a heist movie, and honestly it's been a while since D&D really focused that hard on the "remove gold from ground" aspect of the game.

D&D does heists in the same way it does theatre of the mind, that is it's a thing you can do in the game if you'd like, but the rules aren't really going to provide you any help with it

Disadvantage due the hands tied, since the character is a Barbarian she probably went into rage to tank the attacks and uses reckless attack to balance the disadvantage and hit normally. The slab of rock is an improvised weapons (so she is doing 1d4+STR+2 damage), and as all objects can be thrown, as shown in the trailer. She probably has the tavern brawler feat, that gives proficiency in improvised weapons and grapple attempt as a bonus action when hitting with an improvised weapon or unarmed attack, like she does. She's not tanking attacks because no one else ever makes any. I guess you could write that off as them just missing and the attacks not being shown, but she goes from swinging a rock at a dude's feet to knocking him out with a headshot, getting another guy with the same thrown rock, then wrestles the next two guys down barehanded. Like, I think it's all super awesome, but what it isn't is something you could reasonably do with a D&D barbarian without the DM calling bullshit at any number of points. Instead it's what D&D would be if it was cooler.

Right now I've kind of hit the first really hard stretch where I've figured out the relationship between loresheets, advancement, and powers you can buy, and now I have to start actually writing lore. (Honestly, I came up with a lot of cool ideas for parts of the setting that are a few degrees off the beaten path and serve as alternate setting venues, but I'm still trying to come up with a strong concept for the part that's the "default" campaign location (like the River Province is for Exalted).)

It's not super optimized, but it can work.

The problem is that the list of things she can do is enormous, the movie can't work based on dumb D&D stuff like turn order, disadvantage, and initiative, let alone HP. I’m trying to get more participation in the mini sculpting thread, but it’s already a niche-within-a-niche, so I figured I would ask what kinda stuff people might find interesting? Right now, it’s mostly posting pictures from the few people who do a lot of sculpting, but I feel like there’s more there somehow.

There's quite a few cases in films where combats are portrayed in ways that are neither tactical nor narrative (the classic example being fights where one party does a bunch of effective-looking cool stuff then loses). Descriptions in books are probably better to compare to.

Nobody's claiming a D&D character can't use improvised weapons - just that they're gonna be dogshit at it unless that's their whole deal (and probably even then). An exciting fight scene wouldn't be it, because D&D doesn't do this kind of exciting fight scene.

I don't think it's fair to say it's a fault of D&D that it can't produce the same experience as watching a big budget action movie. But I do think it's fair to say that a number of other systems are probably better at producing an experience that people who've never played a TTRPG before imagined playing D&D would be like.
