lol i just got a notice from my bank that their savings account (not CD) rate is now up to 4%.

just lmao. The only restriction is number of transactions per month.

this is normal right? a completely reasonable thing to expect.

Why lmao? that’s actually kinda low.

Fed put rates up to 4.75 - 5.00 and it’s trivial to earn that rate in a money market fund with check writing. Jokes on anybody with money in a lower paying savings account, has been since the rate hikes really got going.

Banks have to raise their rates to compete, and the only reason it’s slow is because people are lazy and won’t move money for a small bump in rate.

I need to calibrate my posting - do we all hate copyright lawyers / law / capitalist intellectual property rights again?

obviously the Legal System in general and intellectual property regime specifically are designed for the benefit of capital and extraction of rents.

however there are plenty of relatively powerless people who also rely on this regime to make ends meet.

(not that different from acknowledging that the Lumpen Proletariate of the global north enjoy some of the fruits of Western Imperialism, but are still wage slaves)

another framework is that morality of IP theft is pretty analogous to other forms of stealing:

shoplifting from Walmart or Kroger? cool
stealing tools from the local Bike repair coop? lovely.

creating a fake BLM gofundme during the George Floyd protests? bad
pretending to be a homeless youth kicked out of your parents house for your MAGA beliefs? hilarious.

it's not difficult to differente between situations where Capital/fascists/MIC/etc explicitly stand to benefit, and where normal proles are having their livelihoods ruined.

so selling original, unlicensed Lego Star Wars art on Etsy? you do you I guess
American Apparel ripping designs from Tumblr and not sharing the proceeds with the original artist? not great!

but because Disney is a greedy corporation, many people like pretending that there's no distinction when it comes to intellectual property, hand-waving away all power and class dynamics

e: grammar and stuff

In Iceland it was 14% in 2008. I know because I transferred my life savings to get that sweet interest but didn't know how crazy the krónur is. the exchange rate at the time was the worst in my lifetime. I got 68 krónur per dollar and now it's 140 or so. There was a point in I think 2009 where it was over 200.

All this talk of rates got me to check my credit union rates. The savings account rates are garbage right now at .35%. But the checking account is like 3% for balances under $10,000.

CDs start at 1% for 6 months up to 2% for 4 years with a weird outlier at 18 months of 4.25%. That 18 month outlier is kinda odd. But I think the credit union only updates their rates monthly. We will see what comes out next month.

yeah. also remember last week when SVB died every little guy who was buying puts not only didn't get paid but got margin called because technically stock that can't be bought has an infinite price lmao. naturally that doesn't apply to big-money hedge funds.

or when all the people who bet on CDOs to fail back in '08 got hosed when they'd obviously failed but the banks refused to reprice them until the margin calls hosed everybody over. In the end they only had to pay out a tiny fraction of what they really should have to the winning bets.

You can only make money on the financial markets if you have an infinite money hose jammed up your rear end. Everyone else exists to get looted.

I don't get the point of CDs in this rate environment. Maybe it's just a different FDIC category and nothing more. You can lock up your cash in treasuries at better rates, sell them if you need to on the secondary market, and also not pay state taxes on interest.

e: actually their rates are higher than treasuries now which seems right.

Eh. Wouldn't really say that. OWS was taken down by an organized assault of the DHS while the media was only talking about annoying drum circles, with BLM an incredible number of people were gassed and beaten by the police while the media pretended that BLM is actually an NGO that raises awareness and funds, that you can give money to in order to absolve yourself of your sins. It's not that different though one is longer ago than the other so the official position has had more time to replace what actually happened in the public consciousness.

The difference was mainly that OWS caught law enforcement offguard, and the bigger & more widespread it got, and the longer it went on, the more the feds coordinated a militarized police response by the states, with obama's blessings.

Because BLM protests happened under trump, the blue-state govs had to militarize on their own (which they did, usually thru the state national guard units) while pretending that it was trump forcing them to do so.

The similarity was in democrats totally co-opting legitimate & populist protests for their own political ends; no wonder pelosi et al. went down on bended knee in gratitude after the BLM protests.
