Potentially crazy speculation incoming. I made a post in a GBS thread and it got me thinking about something that happened long ago.

Axolotl posted:

Commando is homophobic because Matrix kills his former gay lover, Bennett, in the cruelest way possible...penetrating him in a horrific parody of their previously loving intercourse. To add insult to injury, he tells him to "let off some steam, Bennett!", as though this is just another instance of the sport loving they used to engage in.

Commando is the story of two estranged gay lovers told from the point of view of the man who rejected his past life as sinful and perverse. He moved away with their adopted daughter to an isolated area where he was free of temptation and could shield Jenny from the "depravity" of the outside world. He is forced to rescue his daughter after she is kidnapped by the 'killer mercenary' he used to associate with.

From the point of view of Bennett, Matrix kidnapped their adopted daughter and fled with her to hide off the grid where they couldn't be located. He teamed up with a dictator to exploit his resources to locate his daughter and ultimately rescued her, taking her to a tropical island paradise. Unlike Matrix, Bennett doesn't hide his true self and feels free to express his sexuality in his clothing and speech. This is what he wants for Jenny, to live free and be herself in a beautiful island setting. Nothing is ever said about Jenny's mother, who presumably gave her up for adoption. Note that Matrix, despite being an archetype of hypermasculinity, barely looks at Cindy throughout the movie. He's more interested in mowing down scores of men with increasingly ruthless efficiency enabled by a battalion's worth of phallic guns, emblematic of his sexual frustration.

All joking aside, that does sound like something I read on ruthlessreviews.com back in the mid 00's when I was an immature idiot.

I remember Matt Cale, one of their uh.. more notorious writers wrote a scathing article about Harry Knowles and at the end of it he linked to the fake SA front page Is Not It Cool News, calling it hilarious.

How did SA repay that publicity? By digging through their forums for a weekend web article, of course.

I went looking and can't find the original Cale or weekend article but I swear I remember that happening. I wasn't registered at the time or even lurking the forums but if I was I might have brought it up.

Okay, I went digging and found the original articles. Here they are:

gently caress You Fat Man - Matt Cale (He links to the fake SA frontpage at the bottom)

The Weekend Web article
https://www.somethingawful.com/weekend-web/your-diaper-page/6/
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The reason I'm asking about this is because it was in 2004-5 when this happened. I remember reading the weekend web article, shortly after I went looking for Cale's old article but it was gone. Both RuthlessReviews and SomethingAwful were at their peak then, and had some influence over internet culture. Obviously those days are long gone. What I'm trying to ask is if any goons who were active back then know about some sort of spat SA had with RR. I could be overthinking things, as usual.

Anyway, Matt Cale is a piece of poo poo. When I was looking through his writings I found articles attacking homeless mentally ill people and praising Roman Polanski while making excuses for his crimes.

I have an extremely bad memory so it's hard for me to remember specific things in great detail most of the time, but here's a nugget of a saga

Dwarf Fortress is one of the most complicated "games" of all time, and a copy of it is stored in the Museum of Modern Art for how staggering in scale and complexity it is. An eternity ago in 2006, a group of goons began a succession Let's Play of DF, roleplaying in-character the lord of a fortress, and after their time was up, they would pass it along to the next person to continue running it. It is the saga of Boatmurdered, and it's surprisingly well-known outside of SA. Boatmurdered is easily one of the best Let's Plays to come out of SA. Eventually, over the course of a year, after many triumphs, insane events and an inevitable death spiral, the fortress of Boatmurdered collapsed and fell to ruin.

Years later, out of nowhere, Diablo 3 introduced The Burning Axe of Sankis, referencing one of the goons who ran the fortress:

fast forward to 2019, Tarn and Zach Adams announced they would be releasing an updated version of Dwarf Fortress for actual money on Steam(though the ASCII version will still be free), to help pay for Zach's medical costs. then on December 6th, 2022, Dwarf Fortress Steam Version released to the world, with actual graphics(!), an overhauled mouse-enabled UI(!!) and a robust, shockingly good soundtrack(!!!), that last part being relevant here.

When your fortress eventually collapses and the last dwarf in it dies in Steam DF, a song titled Koganusan plays.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKv-liYc4qU

What is the significance of Koganusan? Well.

This means that 16 years later, Boatmurdered is now technically canon to every game of DF, as every fortress inevitably collapses due to there not actually being a win condition in DF, and Boatmurdered is the last thing you hear as your fortress falls.

The best part of that LP was that because there were so many half-finished pet projects there was a sea of mysterious levers around the fortress and nobody knew what they did. Sometimes they did nothing at all, sometimes they opened a door like 4 floors down and sometimes they flooded a workshop with lava.
