Russia may have just achieved a gruesome new claim to fame in its war in Ukraine. Of some 800,000 Russian troops who were part of the initial invasion army or recruited since then for the war, nearly 420,000 (over 52 percent) could now be dead or otherwise out of action due to wounds.

That breaks down as follows:

· 166,570 Russian troops killed.

· 499,700 wounded (including 150,000 still getting medical care and 100,000 permanently disabled).

The figures are based on calculations using data from Ukrainian, independent Russian, and Western sources for combat casualties and the rate at which soldiers typically return to combat after being wounded.

A military unit that has lost over 50 percent of its personnel is commonly seen as needing to be withdrawn from battle because of a loss of combat effectiveness. A 1997 U.S. Army field manual says such a unit is “combat ineffective” and “requires reconstitution before [its] next mission.” Soldiers may still be able to put up a fight, but not effectively as a cohesive military force.

This is complete nonsense lol, there was not 800 000 of the initial invasion force

Yes, yes, we know the drill, everything's an obvious psyop. But that wasn't the claim made. Modified for clarity:

HonorableTB posted:

That's a very high estimate, yes, but considerably less ludicrous.

The initial invasion force of 170 000 + 300 000 mobilized (though who knows really how many were really mobilized) would yield 470 000.

New Perun on Attrition, Casualties & the Winter War addresses the concerns I've had.

Despite much talk, speculation, and prognosticating, nothing much has happened on the ground, which says something about the talk, speculation, and prognosticating. Perun concludes that given the minuscule changes on the ground, the one who spends the most resources is probably losing, and in terms of losing the war, the war will probably be lost by the one who loses the most materiel, since that seems to be what will dry up well before either national blood reserve does. In this situation, Russia inexplicably brags about expenditure, and employs strategies associated with quite unsustainable burn rates for irreplaceable equipment, while dragging old junk out of the scrap yard. This gives me some degree of hope that we will not have to rely on the reasonableness of poot poots for an end to this.

By the way, Finland is expected to be a NATO member within days. The process could plausibly be finished as soon as by the end of this week.

Hungary could potentially ratify Finland today, and Turkey is expected do so on Wednesday. After that it's only a matter of finalizing the paperwork.

tl;dr: he thinks it was Putler's order to keep attacking even when it didn't make sense, thus letting Ukraine stay in a more advantageous defensive position. He also seems to be hesitating with another wave of mobilization so they might be running low on mobiks again soon.

Theoretically high equipment expenditure is better for us, but Poopin is bragging about building 1500 tanks while we're scraping the bottom of the barrel for surplus, so maybe he knows something there.

I wonder if Finland will decide to significantly increase material in its upcoming 14th aid package to Ukraine, once they fall under the umbrella of NATO's defence treaty. So far they've been keeping a lot of tanks and so forth off the table because of defence requirements, but if they can rely on NATO and the US coming to their defence in the (extremely unlikely but evidently not willing to gamble on) event of a Russian attack, that would, to me, raise questions of how much of their current equipment stock they can risk sparing in the short and mid term, no?

I had a quick google but couldn't see anything concrete

E: ah I misread, the timeframes on actual accession to NATO and the final package before the upcoming Finnish elections probably don't align that well. So it might be a problem for future aid packages (basically one a month) rather than this next one

because it's just that, bragging. Uralvagonzavod can maybe build 20 new hulls a month and reactivate another 60 ancient tanks a month, but all of these will be sorely lacking in things like thermal sights, decent fire control systems, etc. because of sanctions. The ancient tanks are even more vulnerable to things like mortar or FPV kamikaze drones. The point remains is that no matter their production or reactivation, it won't keep pace with the losses. Not by a long shot.

Personally I believe (that I should put my beliefs up my arse hole, because I truly don't know anything of which I speak, but since I'm not a sensible person I will instead fart them out to all of your detriment) that the west could absolutely provide more if they thought they had to, and since they believe they do not, they will not, thereby succeeding in achieving the higher order strategic priority of taking a presumed near peer out of the big boy poker game for the present and slowly attriting them out of the big boy casino for the foreseeable future. I don't know if this is an accurate read, or just cope+cynicism on my part.

Every phase of this war would need its own name because of the associated unique stupidities or catastrophes involved. Blyatskrieg sounds like it'd fit as a catch all term for the whole war.
