Well so much for Weir getting knocked out early, I guess.

God I need a David Lean series so bad. That run of 3 bangers in a row is up there with the 2001 -> Shinning Kubrick run.

Edit: normally I'm extremely Pro Non White Voices but Lean's movies are so important to everyone who ever made a film.

Chow is currently beating Truffaut and I am all here for it. God I don’t want a 21 film Truffaut series. Hard to see Chow winning the whole thing but it would rule.

Truffaut has a lot of good movies that are completely ignored, and he is remarkably consistent in making films enjoyable to watch even if they never quite hit the great mark. He goes back to the well on the same themes and influences enough that it's actually pretty interesting to see how his thinking on them ebbs and flows.

But, the pod has never really been that good at sussing out the psychology behind and around the characters. Or at least they don't have the space to adequately explore the views. So if they did the series it would look more like a bastard child of a Hitchcock/Spielberg series, which in many ways is what Truffaut is, but I don't find that idea particularly compelling to listen to.

This shit's about to go off.
That's a good point about Blank Check in general, and while it's nice that they have a dedicated researcher, I feel like it has caused them to lean a little too much on Fun Facts about production rather than really getting into the meat and themes of the films they discuss. They'll touch on it sometimes but it hasn't really led to a lot of satisfying discussion. Don't get me wrong, I still love the podcast, but I worry that they're a little too bogged down in trivia about the making of the films sometimes.

I am glad to see a lot of important East Asian directors on the bracket and I think one of them will win - probably Park Chan-Wook or Wong Kar-Wai.

I'm actually still a little annoyed about how their Evil Dead II episode barely talked about Evil Dead II.

It was a good episode and I love Hodgman*, but I got it instead of actually talking about one of my favorite movies.

*I own multiple of his books. One of them is signed for gently caress's sake.

My philosophy...
The first rule is:
You look good.
I feel like Weir winning is inevitable. I think the way they framed him at the beginning of the tournament as someone who they would love to do, but won't necessarily pick on their own, has got people voting to finally give David his Master & Commander episode.

Xiahou Dun posted:

It's one of my favorite podcasts, but it's hard to get excited about specific episodes, because you never know which type of episode it's going to be.

Griffin coming across a little too passionately for his love of sunshine. I think Interstellar might be the better version of this film? Well at least it has better robots.

But I still need to rewatch sunshine. I saw it originally in theaters and found the last act a little on the crazy side then. So will be interesting to see how I view it now.

I like Sunshine more than Interstellar. Though I do get the criticisms of the final act of Sunshine, I think Interstallar’s final act is less successful. Nolan has a really hard time with making the emotional drama come through and not feel over-intellectualized.

Both have the same problem for me where they want all the introspection and thoughtfulness of some of the harder sci-fis but they chose to wrap it in very soft sci-fi packaging. So you’re asking me to pay a lot of attention to some parts of your premise, but if I apply that to other parts the gossamer-thin science falls apart.

Instead of being like a chocolate covered pretzel it winds up being more like a hershey’s kiss filled with cheez whiz : I think they’d both be much stronger if the parts weren’t at war with each other.

(For the record, soft sci-fi is cool and good. It’s just not working here is my contention.)

Oh that doesn’t bother me at all with either film. I don’t really care about the hardness or softness of the sci fi.

Even if it’s just The Core in space.

Ha I kind of like Nolan’s goofy science force of love. But interstellar makes a good pair with Sunshine. Or maybe Event Horizon also.

I forgot Michelle Yeoh was in Sunshine. Cool surprise after her big year and then watching all her Hong Kong action films on criterion channel.

Rewatched sunshine. Solid but still like interstellar more.

I think one fault I find with Sunshine is that they stress how this is humanities last hope, and the characters act like it mostly, but the whole mission plan doesn’t feel like it. Like there’s just no redundancy. The sun shield angle should be physically tied to course direction with no human involvement . There should be more escort ships then or more than one person on the ship who knows how to use the payload. The whole crew setup is so lean and feels like it is following Alien style, but that was a corporate crew and totally expendable. I think Interstellar feels smarter about their mission planning.

Also Pinbacker should have taken out Chris Evans, really sell the menace.

GDT is one of the most inexplicably dick ridden directors by critics I've ever seen. Getting the fish loving movie to win best picture is absolute nonsense. And Nightmare Alley absolutely didn't justify getting a seat at the table last year.

If they wanna do a foreign director they should go for one that isn't already getting blown by every Tom Dick and Harry in the industry.

Also GDTs Pans Labyrinth and Devils Backbone are some top tier films. GDT just seems like a natural fit for them with a mix of small and giant Hollywood movies with varying commercial success. Though they haven’t decided to discuss him in 8 years makes it seem like they may not want to…

But anyways I don’t think GDT would beat Bong or War.
