it was "only" 10 mill but the important point is it happens over basicaly 3 days, so it can be viewed/proccessed/reacted-to as one discrete "event"

whats gonna actually happen all throughout the 2020s and 2030s is that four, then five, then six-figures of people will die per day over 20-30 day stretches in the peak of the season. it will be very easy to ignore but by the time we make it to 2040 the body count in pak/ind/ban will easily be in the tens of millions.

Yeah it'll probably be this. :unsmith:

Whether or not there is "overpopulation," the people most vocal about it in my experience tend to think it's the biopolitically disposable brown folks far away who are the "over," not the suburban wasp consuming a thousand times the average daily co2 output worth of consumer bullshit of any one person on the subcontinent.

To Fight Coastal Erosion, Design a Bespoke Artificial Reef
Reefy, a startup in the Netherlands, makes modular reefs that double as living breakwaters for coastal areas suffering the effects of the climate crisis.

(that company name again: Reefy)

quote:

Jaime Ascencio [...] was eager to find sustainable ways to combat the coastal erosion that was eating away at the region’s treasured beaches—and threatening the tourism dollars brought in by its seaside resorts.

you hear that? MONEY is at stake here! quick son, bring your college fund!

quote:

But Ascensio, who knew that artificial reefs could make for natural breakwaters, could only find solutions that were neither sustainable nor stable enough to resist the force of the waves. So he went on to get a master's in coastal engineering at the celebrated Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands—and developed one himself.

After more than five years of research and development, the [...] 17 blocks, six tons each and made of low-carbon concrete,[...] makes up Rotterdam's first living breakwater, an artificial reef that will restore marine biodiversity and double as a more sustainable wave barrier [...]

quote:

In many ways, the underlying principle behind the startup—that rewilding the ocean can protect the coastline—already exists in nature. All over the world, coral reefs act as a natural buffer, protecting coastal regions from waves, storms, and tsunamis.

Pffft, what does nature know

quote:

Except coral reefs are dying from the relentless stress caused by climate change.

drat, we should do something about that

quote:

This much-documented demise has given rise to myriad artificial reef solutions over the years—some unintended, others highly engineered. These run the gamut from sunken ships to purposefully submerged old US army tanks, NYC subway cars, eerie underwater sculpture parks, and dome-shaped coral skeletons preseeded with coral fragments by robotic arms.

quote:

Reefy's solution sits on the latter end of that spectrum, where structures are prefabricated for the purpose of restoring reefs instead of repurposing decommissioned vessels or old materials (like the infamous Osborne Reef, where 2 million old tires were bundled with steel clips and dropped off the coast of Florida, only for the clips to corrode and those 2 million tires to float away in the ocean.)

lol, lmao

quote:

The star of Reefy's portfolio is an elongated brick that is heavy enough to resist the force of the waves caused by Rotterdam’s ships. It was hydrodynamically designed to let the ocean water flow through it via a trio of holes. Much like a Lego brick, each of these blocks comes with round protrusions at the top so they can interlock with one another and be assembled in a vast array of configurations that will vary from one location to the next.
Naturally, the blocks are also designed to stimulate all kinds of biological growth like oysters and mussels and provide shelter for sturgeon and eel. Their surfaces are rough and rippled to help corals and bivalves grow on them more easily

rippled for your pleasure

quote:

And in the North Sea, which is home to major offshore wind parks, Reefy is planning to test yet another of its products designed to act as new oyster habitat on the rocky seabed that the wind turbine monopiles are driven into. “Today, the North Sea is like a desert,” says Ascensio,” so it’s a great opportunity to restore oysters.”

godspeed Reefy, godspeed

The flight we're on may be experiencing some unintended and potentially adverse effects, the BBC is able to report. A group of prominent scientists state that we're currently falling, and that we're falling faster than experts previously predicted we could fall. There are worrying reports that all our engines are unresponsive, though there is some argument as to whether there were originally four engines or only two. There are also some signs that there may be issues within the cabin crew, who have been unavailable for comment, which may be related to the smoke pouring out from beneath the cockpit door. Our investigation so far can exclusively reveal that all the parachutes that should be available had been removed to save costs, which is part of a worrying trend in the industry.

One unnamed member of the crew, who agreed to be interviewed, insisted that "the wings will be able to continue carrying us forward at a safe altitude, but only if we all move to the back of the plane" which has caused conflict between passengers. There is currently some speculation that one of both of the wings may have been ripped off at some point in the incident, but we have been unable to either confirm or deny these rumours as there is currently no visibility out of the windows. Despite this concern, which would have significant impact on the viability of this plan, this is still considered to be the most easily implemented way forward and should have a noticeable effect on our trajectory by 2035.

If anyone saw those reports of Aurora down as far as New Mexico over the weekend it was kind of weird since there wasn't a flare or coronal mass ejection from the current earth facing sunspots so nobody was really expecting a moderately strong geomagnetic storm to pop up so there was some speculation on what happened since the slower moving stuff isn't usually a surprise.

Turns out it was probably due to a coronal mass ejection from the opposite side of the sun that wasn't directed at us at all but was so massively large we still got hit with the fringes of it and that was strong enough to give us our biggest geomagnetic storm in the last decade.

Had that been timed differently we could have seen some effects on the ground
