I’d like to be able to independently rate pain in different parts of my body. It’d also be good if I could at least add some notes about food, sleep and activity so I can see how those correlate. I just don’t think I’m ever going to see a pain clinic again so I’m trying to be more active in managing it myself.

If you’re looking to just track things, I might recommend some sort of custom creation via Notion. It’s pretty flexible and not too tough to set up. It’s better than a spreadsheet.

Might also recommend Curable, which isn’t for tracking pain but rather a pain management-type app that takes a mindfulness-centered approach. A lot of it is subscription-walled but it might be worth checking out.

So far I have to say that Apple Music Classical is exceeding expectations. The library is phenomenal. I've only found a couple of really, really obscure things that it doesn't have. There are also some tagging bugs here and there (why is Debussy written in Japanese? why is the performer of this Satie work tagged instead of the composer? etc.) but nothing gamebreaking enough to stop you from finding what you're looking for.

The next question is under what circumstances it will actually put out lossless, since Apple Music transcodes lossless to AAC 256 with many Airplay 2 receivers even though the spec supports lossless and even though the app will say it's doing lossless. Will the Classical version also do this extremely aggravating behavior?

Why is there a standalone app just for classical music?

Classical music often involves multiple musicians recording works that have been recorded many times before and are referred to by different names. For example, from the formal Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 to the popular byname of Moonlight Sonata, or in multiple languages, such as Mondschein Sonata in German. Such complexities mean that classical music fans have been ill-served by streaming platforms. Until now. A distinct app, included with an Apple Music subscription, gives these classical music lovers the editorial and catalog content they've been missing.

Only a brand-new app — with specialized features and a beautiful interface designed for the genre — could remove the complexity and make classical music easily searchable, browsable, and accessible for beginners and experts alike.

it's because most music apps are based on albums and classical is poorly suited to that because its not really an album based genre

you see this also with stuff like early electronic/dance where a ton of really important guys have the bulk of their notable output as singles which most apps also handle poorly but I think people into that stuff just pirate everything anyway

anyway just from looking at a friend's experience with it, the biggest issue i noted (and one that existed in primephonic) is that you can't search by record label. that's a really important field to have if you're looking for a particular recording

Basically classical music requires that the metadata be sliced and diced differently from normal music.

Setter is Better.
the app comes from when Apple purchased Primephonic who apparently did an absolute ton of work manually editing metadata

but yeah it's just not an album-based format, and you run into weird problems when it gets treated as one by apps/databases. some of the most deranged arguments i've seen involve classical records on Discogs because a) many of the records have no obvious title, and b) some people were incredibly against the idea that the composer should be credited as a "main artist" on a record

Yeah that is too bad. It would be nice to be able to search by catalog number too. Neither are dealbreakers for me though...as long as the metadata is correct otherwise. And as long as it streams lossless correctly!!!!

People love it around here when I poo poo on Spotify and praise Apple Music.

Spotify connect is pretty good. It offers true handoff and better multi device control, which airplay2 can’t do.

Everywhere else, I think Apple Music provides a lot of benefits. Spotify seems to care less and less about music nowadays, and more about Podcasts/Audiobooks/Social stuff. Spotify has been teasing lossless for 2+ years now with no release in sight, and it will be a paid/premium option. Meanwhile, Apple Music has free Dolby Atmos spatial mastered albums in lossless, which sound amazing on my Sonos Atmos sound system.

Another great thing about Apple Music is that the music catalog is bigger. There are tons of live DJ sets and mixes that include tracklistings, like SoundCloud. For me, a streaming service’s catalog size and its sound quality is the most important thing, and Apple Music’s catalog is bigger, and has higher quality lossless and Atmos files.

Another great thing about Apple Music is it supports shortcuts and automations, so I can trigger specific playlists to my hue lights using Siri, among other things. Spotify could implement this feature if they wanted to, but they’re too focused on being the next tiktok or whatever.

Spotify has been downright horrible at adopting iOS APIs, mostly because they’re suing Apple. Their Apple Watch downloads took years to come out, and it’s not very good. For years, Spotify has refused to update their app to include airplay2 support for those who want it with homepod minis or sonos speakers that support it.

For us, AppleOne Family pricing with Music, TV, Arcade, and iCloud was comparable to what we were already paying for Spotify + iCloud storage.

I’m late to the party but this is all so accurate. I switched from Spotify to Apple Music during the Joe Rohan antivax furor but stuck around because the features are just so much better and it’s really easy to find amazing DJ sets.

All this talk about classical music nudges me to ask a semi related question. Is it possible to search other people’s playlists somewhere? I’ve been wanting to find music with a strong orchestral background that isn’t classical, e.g. lots of movie soundtracks or albums like Metallica’s S&M concerts… it’s not a specific genre and searching for “orchestral” just returns artists with that in their name. I’m sure someone else has already compiled a playlist like this already so wondering if there’s a place that these things can be shared and searched publicly.

I'm sure you've seen this, but Apple Music can do this. Type "orchestral" into the Search tab and hit the Search button. After hitting the search button filters will display at the top, and one of the options is "Playlists". Tap that. The first 50 or so results is Apple Music generated playlists and then everything below that is user playlists. You can tell because it has usernames like "@cjay87 (Andrew Llanos)" as the playlist author. The more words you add to the query (ie, "orchestral metal") the more varied the user playlists. It's not super extensive but it's a starting point.

One of the selling points of Apple Music originally was supposed to be the amazing human curation. "We have a specialist in rockabilly metal curating weekly playlists!" They must have fired all of those people and be using crappy Siri AI because I'm not super thrilled with their playlists generally. But I might just be overly picky in what I want to listen to sometimes.

Looks like Safari 16.4 added some highly demanded features, including the ability for a web app to display badges. As somebody who self hosts a lot services, this will be great if/when webapps roll out support.

A service like Alerty has already rolled out support for it.

Deleted Twitter off my phone today - the iOS app is responsible for about a third of my battery usage on my 13 mini, and for a device where battery is at a premium that seems like too much. I get that I probably use Twitter more than other apps, but has anyone else found Twitter more aggressive with battery post-musk? Are there better behaved third party apps?

Ultimately me not having Twitter on my phone is a good thing so I won’t lose any sleep on it if not. I mean I I’ll probably gain sleep in the literal sense.

I definitely recommend it. You can search for specific compositions, and it’ll show you a list of different performers/performances of that piece, including an “Editor’s Pick.” Great way to discover reinterpretations of your favorites!

You could also just ask about this in the recommendations thread in NMD. Although, really, if you are into this stuff, try some more classical...and Apple Music Classical is a great way to do this. I mean, classical is going to be like this, but not corny and trite.

You can disable notifications for Reminders on your iPad. It’s the only way iirc.

Settings > Notifications > Reminders

If you just want to turn off vibrate you can turn it off by tapping on Sounds (or just turn off Sounds) altogether. The 3 alert types should be self explanatory.

Not quite sure what you mean but I think I intended that? it’s how I use my ipad 99% of the time because it’s mainly an instrument or sketchbook and in neither situation do I want the ipad itself to be a distraction — my phone can handle that.

I think still get all notifications I want through DND with my watch/phone set to the mode, since I don’t have the ipad syncing focus modes

Oh. I’m okay with that too actually. I try to maintain reasonable responsiveness expectations amongst my contacts, I can’t be constantly accessible via notification.

I’ll carry a separate phone entirely when some bullshit job has those expectations.
