Given that drinking Budweiser is alcoholism for homeopaths, yes.

The real challenge is how you tie your tie (don't lie I know you can). The cadets taught me the full windsor and it fucks me right up to do a standard half.

"Bond didn't trust anyone with a windsor knot, there was something of the cad about them" is a good enough endorsement these days

you know, a week ago i would have agreed with you, but then i had the misfortune to see their site yesterday, and the top four headlines on their main page were all about the newest school shooting in the states:

- an autoplay video from the cops' bodycam of them killing the shooter, and a still of the dead body lying on the floor; headline 'TRANS SHOOTER TAKEDOWN'
- people who had known the shooter talking about their mental health issues and troubled childhood; headline 'OUTCAST TRANS KILLER'
- a photo of one of the child victims, who was 'pulling fire alarm to warn friends when she was killed by the trans shooter'
- a report on the cops seizing documents from their home which indicated that 'autistic trans killer planned attack in chilling detail'

thought i was numb to how awful the press is, but no, still capable of revulsion apparently :smith:

It looks like basically the same knot with an extra turn. I learned it when I was about 6 and the main variation I've used is putting a 2p coin in the knot in case someone tries to peanut you.

https://www.iop.org/about/news/young-people-call-uk-media-giants-bin-boffin

quote:

s part of the Limit Less campaign, the IOP is calling on the nation’s three red-top tabloids to bin the term ‘boffin’ as a catch-all term for all scientists or experts and to provide a more rounded and accurate picture of both what scientists do and the diverse range of backgrounds they come from.

The IOP has written to the editors of The Sun, The Mirror and The Star asking them to adopt our newly published guidelines for the reporting of science and to drop the word ‘boffin’ from their style-guides.

A survey of 1,000 young people and 1,514 adults, commissioned by the IOP and conducted by Censuswide, found ‘boffin’ is a confusing and heavily gendered term which could be putting people off studying science, with over ten times as many respondents thinking the term described a man rather than a woman.

The study also found:

Over a third of all respondents had never heard of the term ‘boffin’
18-24 year olds are nearly 80% more likely to view it as an insult than a compliment
As many as 15% of 11-17 year-olds would be put off pursuing a subject if they thought they would to be called a ‘boffin’ because of their interest in it
Among IOP members, who were also surveyed, nearly one in five said they would consider the word ‘boffin’ to be an insult. Furthermore, 58% of IOP members surveyed would expect the term to describe a man, with no-one surveyed expecting it to describe a woman.

Well one place I worked in my 20s, the General Manger used to introduce me to GMs from other divisions and 'important' customers as "Our Boffin".

As for people knowing what scientists do (and differentiating areas of scientific expertise), when I was young and foolish and doing temp jobs in various care, cleaning etc, other co-workers would ask me what I was studying and initially I would say 'physics'. Most of the time this resulted in one of two further questions "is that PE" or "is that to be a physician". After that experience, if people asked me I would say 'science' which was plenty enough for most normal people. I'd tell them more if they asked more.

Amazed anyone thinks it's an insult - though I am almost 40 years older than their survey.

Disclaimer: I am a member of this august institution and noone surveyed me :bahgawd:

It's the cognitive dissonance caused by lying about Corbyn on tv and knowing Corbyn was the only MP who stood up for Miliband's father when the Heil were dragging him through the mud.

Meanwhile:
Put in a compensation claim for today's train disruption but it's
awkward because my ticket was a combo return made of singles crossing two separate train companies and the Elizabeth Line all of which were completely up poo poo creek today. Took me over 9 hours to get from Brighton to my dwelling in South Wales (3.5 hours by car if I could drive!).
Because having to take different trains to what I was booked on due to cancellations etc, I arrived at Newport just in time to have to wait 2 hours for the next bus so I put the total cost for the entire return in and let them figure it out. But also, they want you to send a photo of your ticket but the ticket machine keeps the wretched thing! Sent a photo of the 'reservation coupon' and hope that does.
But seems I can't claim for the £6.50 wasted in Costa Coffee while waiting for the last bus - and do NOT eat the chocolate orange cake it is £3.45 a slice - the slice is approx the size of a postage stamp - and it is dry and not a bit tasty.
