As many as 15% of 11-17 year-olds would be put off pursuing a subject if they thought they would to be called a ‘boffin’ because of their interest in it
Among IOP members, who were also surveyed, nearly one in five said they would consider the word ‘boffin’ to be an insult. Furthermore, 58% of IOP members surveyed would expect the term to describe a man, with no-one surveyed expecting it to describe a woman.
