Back in the day I used to post a bunch of pics from my buddy Tony. Well, he doesn't take too many pics anymore. But I just got a camera, so now you can all see my bird pics.

I'll give her a pass, because she is definitely not from anywhere they are native birds. That accent is southern US for sure. If I had to pick a state I'd guess Georgia. How tf did she come to have one of those in her house?

Also I can confirm Americans are taught to pronounce it "kook-a-burra". Hell, I didn't even know it was wrong until today. Aussies ITT, do they really sit in old gum trees?

Given most of the native trees around the place are gum trees that is a safe bet. There are ones living in the palm trees at the front of my place though so it's not exclusively gum trees.

These people are not aware how dangerous that rear end in a top hat bird is, otherwise they would have surrendered that phone. Edit: Looking it up, apparently Casowaries are way less agressive or territorial than rumored. You still shouldn't aggravate them, though. cant cook creole bream has a new favorite as of 20:28 on Mar 26, 2023 |

That guy is probably smarter than me since he thinks it needs to go back to its tree and I would just wanna figure out how to make friends with the giant, dangerous bird. I waved at a familiar hawk yesterday, on my way into town, though, so I am dumb.

Aw heck yes. We have their close relatives, the red-capped robin and rose robin, in the forests near my house. These photos are from last year: The Boginderra forest has been left untouched because the soil is rocky and nutrient-poor even by Australian standards. So when it hasn't rained in a while, all the grasses and shrubs and trees seem to end up various shades of white and dry-straw-yellow and bleached grey, with all the animal life doing its best to blend in with that colour scheme. And then, amidst all the grey, you have these few tiny little birds all coloured neon red or pink shooting around. They are extremely rad.

Birds are so freakin cute! They hit a different cuteness factor than those robins, but I can’t wait to see the American Robins return soon. I joined some birding Facebook page a while ago and I loved this comment someone left on a bird photo: So true!

I remember a popular variant in primary school here (same thing as early grade school) went 'Kookaburra sits on the electric wire, He's not laughing cause his balls are on fire.' Great birds but real bloody noisy when they get excited about something and prone to stealing sausages and bashing the hell out of them against tree branches (they think the sausages are snakes). Was at a mate's place just down the road from me the other day and we were outside talking and pretty much had to yell over the pair of kookaburras in the tree above us. Anyway here's another good tiny local bird The superb fairy wren - they're small but they have no fear, seen them drive off much larger birds and even a big eastern brown snake that got too close to a nest one time.

Yellow Ant posted:Birds are so freakin cute! A fledgling was out of the nest last year, and I spent hours trying to get either its parents to come back or get it somewhere safe because my mom’s cats wanted to play with it. Finally got it into a yard that was far enough away that the old lady cats were no longer interested. Its family found out the next morning and after 3 days, it was strong enough of a flyer to join them for foraging. It had a particular noise when it landed on the gate to stare at me. I think it might have figured out by then that the cats were a bigger threat and I didn’t want to eat it. So it could have been a greeting. Or it might have just been a rude nickname for me.

In winter, here in Ireland, the long-tailed tits form up into lovely little flocks. You're walking around the town and you hear some tiny bips, and all of a sudden, you're surrounded with tiny little birbs with very long tails. They are super brave, and very, very sweet.
