The problem with words like “boffin” is that they create a distinction between “normal” people and scientists, and add weight to the idea that being a scientist is something special and unattainable for most people.

Science, and physics in particular, has an access problem, with vast swathes of society hugely under represented. Words like “boffin” perpetuate the idea that it is only the preserve of white men, and that is not a good thing.

It’s a stupid word, too. One level up from “egghead” but similar vibes for me. Makes my skin crawl. Or did, when I was a scientist.

"This is a bit of a... a poof song"
Man, Rachel Reeves on the Today programme this morning as useless as ever. She refused to commit to increasing capital gains tax, despite Labour using it as an attack line against Sunak when he published his tax returns.

I don't really understand why capital gains is treated as this sacred cow which can never be touched. Surely increasing it by only a few points would rake in huge amounts of money, and have very little detrimental affect on the average voter?

I mean I know the answer is obvious, but there's far less stigma around tampering with corporation tax, for example.

Coming out with this now will just screw over Labour councils won't it? If they increase council tax it opens them to criticism that "Labout said they wouldnt increase council tax" . If they don't increase council tax then that means a big cut in funding in real terms.

Seems it's not brand new https://euronews.com/2021/12/07/this-liquid-tree-in-belgrade-is-fighting-back-against-air-pollution

It's apparently designed for places too dense for trees, and also for heavily polluted areas, because while car exhaust can poison trees, algae is comparatively resistant.
