I've said this before, but you literally can't have a weird old catholic cult that isn't heretical. Catholicism is incredibly hierarchical, you can't be a Catholic unless you submit to the current Pope. You want to get all freaky and pre-vatican two? Yeeted out the drat window right there. You're a protestant, no matter how fuckin freaky you want to be.

My wife asked me to help someone that works for her after the woman's daughter was seriously assaulted by her boyfriend and in the process of helping her navigate through everything she called me up in tears because the shitheads pastor showed up at her house and berated her for mistreating him (he is probably getting deported) and reminded her that it's her job to submit to a man. Luckily for him the lawyer I hooked her up with managed to calm me down and handled it. There was apparently a lot of screaming involved and now the pastor has his very own stay away order to his name and possible charges coming

Fun fact: in Catholicism if you don't get married in a Catholic church under the Catholic marriage sacrament, the Church does not consider you to be married in the eyes of God. So they straight up can't change the venue (unless they find a more accommodating priest, but honestly it sounds like the priest is not the main problem here).

AITA for disciplining a student after he left my class to use the restroom when I told him he could not?quote:This may be a bit long, sorry I am still new to this app. Anyways, I am a high school teacher (junior English.) There is one student in my class who I am not particularly fond of. He’s very bright, he just talks a lot and gets distracted easily, and as a result, distracts his classmates. Earlier today, he asked me if he could use the restroom, and I told him no, and that he should have used it earlier. He looked at me confused and left anyways. I was in disbelief. When he came back, I asked him why had he left when I told him he couldn’t. He asked me if I expected him to hold it for the rest of class time, which would have been around half an hour. He also informed me that he never thought asking for the rest room was for permissions sake anyways, as no teacher had ever told him no. I didn’t really care for his excuses, so I told him he was being disobedient and would call his mother. He shrugged and said she’d be on his side anyways. I called her and she asked was there a specific reason I wouldn’t let him go. I responded no, and she said she would have walked out too, and to stop being so petty and controlling as to not let near adults use the restroom. This annoyed me, and I later asked my husband about it. He also asked my reason for not letting him go, and upon not providing one, also sided with the student. I’m very confused by this; students should respect a teacher’s authority. I’m only posting here because everyone seems to be aiding against me.

That teacher is dumb as poo poo. If there’s no reason, just let the kid go. I’ve denied students bathroom breaks, but it’s always been a reason. If your answer to a parent is “oh no reason i just love to say no” then shut up and let the kid go.

She put on a movie for us to watch and I said I had to go to the restroom. Teacher said no, it's the middle of the movie, I said I really needed to go and couldn't hold it the rest of the movie, and she says no again. I just walked to the restroom and went, then when I got back, teacher puts me in timeout and says she'd be telling my parents when they came to pick me up that night. My stepmom comes to pick me up an hour later and they say "do you know what your son did?" and then they explain. My stepmom just stares at them and goes "so the issue is that he had to go to the bathroom and you wouldn't let him?". They say yes. She just turns to me and says in a completely normal conversational tone, "next time they deny you permission to use the restroom, you have my permission to pee on the wall". Then just takes my hand and walks me out without another word. They did not ever try to stop me from using the restroom again.

Dear Prudence quote:My sister has suffered a lot in life, including the loss of her first two children. But she basically suffocated her daughter, “Kira.” Kira was chaperoned everywhere, had a 9 p.m. curfew well into college, and was expected to call her mother every day. Predictably, Kira chose to get her masters at a school on the opposite coast and hasn’t visited home since. Kira went overseas for a conference and ended up falling in love with a native. She planned to immigrate there. Kira didn’t tell her mother for six months and pretended to still be in the States. She did accidentally tell me and begged me to keep her confidence. I did but I told Kira she needed to tell her mom sooner rather than later. When she did, my sister hit the roof. The mother/daughter fight to end all fights. Eventually, they reconciled, the romance fizzled out, and Kira moved home. Comment: quote:Your sister needs someone with a backbone to tell it to her straight. She has it upside down. She is not upset because people hide things from her and want to be away from her. They hide things and want to be away from her because she is controlling and she reacts like an infant instead of a grown-up.

Okay, here's the most one I've seen in a while: WIBTA for thinking it’s a weird thing for my landlord to ask me to take care of his kids? quote:I (25F) live in a large city and stay in a family’s basement for over $1300 a month. They have been nice but we don’t really talk at all which is fine with me. I moved in around Feb and I mostly keep to myself and just go to work. And the weirder thing is that the top comment, and a surprising number of other people, are agreeing it's weird but going "although, if you do agree to do this,..." instead of recommending "wtf, I will be calling the police if you go through with this" Just the most thing all around

If the kids are at least 17 then they may be able to do a lot for themselves, which makes it worse because your main contribution there would be accepting legal responsibility and potential liability if anything happened.

Sure, you don't actually have to call the cops, but I can't imagine any way that accepting the slightest form of responsibility for the kids of someone you barely know is a good idea. That's something I'd have long discussions over beforehand with a family member, and it sounds like this is a person they basically say hi to in passing and give a rent check to once a month.

AKA Pseudonym posted:AITA for disciplining a student after he left my class to use the restroom when I told him he could not? The common procedure where I live is: 5~10 minutes at the start and at the end - generally it's accepted we'll say no. The start of the period is used for settling the class, Do Nows, instruction, etc. Like, loving go between classes - doubly so if it's right after morning tea or lunch. There are circumstances where we'll allow the student to go, especially if they're busting or there are other needs that must be met (namely "ah poo poo, here comes the period blood," which has happened a few times to me working at a girls' school. I also write a note for them to go to the office or nurse to go get the poo poo they need in those circumstances, and allow them to take a friend if they feel self-conscious). At the end of the period, it's for plenary, and also in case they miss the end of class when the kids have to move off to some other classroom. Generally though, if the price of saying "no" is the student's self-respect and dignity, it's not a price I'm willing or prepared to pay. That said, we also can't have kids just go wandering off because it's a potential health and safety issue - the classroom teacher obviously needs to be hyper-aware of where they are, especially on the off-chance they get hurt outside of class, go truanting, or are otherwise in some sort of condition in which they can't immediately make it back to class. One of my kids had a tumble down some stairs yesterday when she was out of class, and when I was on practicum, some creep-rear end creep wandered into the school because he saw a girl he liked the look of when she was outside of class, so sometimes poo poo happens, you know? In this case though, the teacher - assuming this story is even real - hosed up big time. She admits she basically had no good reason, other than some sort of personal grudge against the kid. I've taught some real pieces of poo poo (one of them was in the news recently for stabbing a few people up in a rage for example!) and some of my kids now are real pieces of poo poo. However, if you're letting petty poo poo like that cloud your judgement, then you really need to get the gently caress out of the classroom. The child's health, safety and well-being - mental, physical and emotional - should always come paramount, and OP has failed spectacularly on that front.
