The more I think back on this episode, the stupider it gets.

The goons above me were right, Vadic totally didn't have a plan going in and everything would have ended right there if Geordie wasn't such an idiot.

i can't tell if they meant that the changeling replaced the scientist or if they meant that the changeling "linked" with her to become vadic

i thought it was the latter but it seems like a lot of people seem to think its the former for some reason and i guess it is actually kinda ambiguous. well, if so, who cares? she's just some scientist

Picard straight up addresses it, she's using the scientist as her 'default' shape to remind her of the trauma. It's probably why she's scarred, because Vadic presumably tortured the scientist lady.

I'd buy there being a few captured Changelings that the Link just assumed got killed and S31 kept quietly.

Well, at least the music in this episode tried.

Speaking of which when the Voyager theme tells us it's okay, this is the real Tuvok, only for it to not be fifteen seconds later, that's this whole show in a nutshell. Endless emotional bait-and-switch. At this point my money's on the gang getting together on the bridge of the Enterprise D, but it's the Titan's holodeck.

Honestly? Wouldn't hate it if the final scene was a "for old time's sake". It'll be better than Captain Jack saying "engage" on the bridge of the G (geddit? Like G-ene! Roddenberry! :haw:)

lol that's something that's been bothering me about the dialogue too (to be clear i'm not saying you're wrong, that is what happens). it's just picard's speculation i think, vadic doesn't actually explicitly say this, but once a main character says it, we're supposed to automatically accept it as truth

its really ironic that he was with beverly when he said it actually because the show is really bad about using her character to do the exact same thing too

Ehhhh that's one thing I don't have an issue with, they could easily be infiltrators who were caught during the Dominion cold/hot war and written off by the Dominion as lost assets. Like the second Bashir one suicide bombed himself, their lives weren't that sacrosanct

There's a point where any actor has to follow direction and you only see the take that the director picked.

I'm also willing to give a pass on 'there were changeling captives'. If you are going to add to the backstory of the Dominion War then you do necessarily have to add things that weren't shown in DS9. The problem is that the reason this stuff is added is so that the story can be 'the Federation sucks and is the bad guys'.

It was entirely to create an artificial mystery just for the audience until the big Changeling reveal but now they’ve got the costumes anyway so they’re just gonna keep using them.

It’s just like DS9, remember all the times changelings showed up as big hulking goons who click-talked like the aliens from District 9??? Don’t you remember??

What do you mean that’s not how DS9 did it???

That's what I said - there's literally no reason for them to be bird people and speaking in clicks.

But, it was a Mystery Box at the start of the series, therefore it doesn't have to make sense.

I thought Vadic explained she could pass on her upgrade/evolved powers to other Changelings, but they wouldn't live as long and is painful? So after giving them to the other 8 captured Changelings, she went back to the Great Link and recruited however many they needed to infiltrate Starfleet.

As for the 9 captured Changelings, I didn't have an issue with that. I mean they shot a 100 baby Changelings out into the ether to see what was up. Have 9 total captured during the Dominion War (along with pre and post) seems reasonable. Not a big fan of the torture science, but seeing how S31 developed a genocide virus, I guess it isn't really out of character for what was happening at the time.

On the other hand, I did hate the Picard/Beverly decision to just execute a prisoner. To protect their weirdo kid or not, it seemed completely out of character. Overall, I don't hate this season like a lot of people here do. I also don't think it is particularly great like it seems the rest of the internet thinks. It has been a step up from S1 and S2 (not a high bar to clear) which were just atrocious, but I did not like this episode.

Also, I know the Fleet Day thing where every Starfleet ship is going to be there will drive me insane. Besides how stupid that is as a concept, I know there are going to be like 200 ships total or something stupidly small for a power as large as the Federation. But I guess that is just the usual Sci-Fi/Fantasy writers being bad at numbers.

The changeling shoot out was a considered and thought about thing though.
And bashir wanting to suicide makes sense in the context of what they needed that changeling to do (he did also try to escape at first, but his role was HUGE)

200 starships is a lot to be fair. The shows show the starships as always very busy, presumably because they are faster than everything else. And a lot of federation members still maintain their own fleets.
