That's the same one they released on YouTube like a month ago, right? All that material is real good, yeah.

I'm glad that their old lead singer leaving didn't kill the band.

The Spotify underground is really wild. I found someone who has been uploading entire Coast to Coast AM shows, like, basically all of them. It's definitely not the person who owns the rights but they've been doing it for years without getting caught lol

It's a piece of JUNK!
New Altin Gün album rocks as expected. I'm glad they're able to do live drums again, since they have one of the best drum sounds around. But I'm also glad they didn't completely abandon the synth/dance influence from their pandemic albums because that was really fun too. (Especially the last track which pretty much splits the difference.)

I swear I just saw someone in this thread talking about the new album by The New Pornographers, but maybe that was reddit. Anyway, I just listened to it, and it's probably the first bad album, which is a pretty good track record given that they've been making music for nearly 25 years. But the album was frankly boring. It sounded like their heart just isn't in it anymore, it didn't sound joyous and bombastic like all of their other stuff, they just seemed tired. Makes me a little less excited to see them live again in May, but they have enough great stuff in their catalogue, and they always put on a great show.

It's on the mellower side for sure. But so was Challengers, and that one grew on me eventually so I'm hopeful the same happens here. What I'm definitely not keen on with this one is the mix on Carl's vocals, his voice sounds kinda swampy and muffled on most songs. I'm not sure what they were thinking there.

I don’t know that I agree about joyless but mellow and a grower seem right. Usually at least one track hits right away but that didn’t happen here.

I've spun it a couple of times and I think the new pornographers record is pretty solid. Seems like they're going for a bit of an AM Gold vibe. I also like the new Hold Steady. I don't think either band has put out a bad record

As for Boy Genius...my record hasn't come in yet, so I haven't listened yet.

Hold Steady album is very good. First single Sideways Skull is still my favourite track on there, but the superb Carlos Is Crying comes close.

Boygenius album felt like a missed opportunity more than anything else. The rockers are pretty good, and employ all the members' talents. Unfortunately, the singer-songwriter fare that makes up most of the album feels slow and listless, and were really solo tracks with the others as background singers. Phoebe's tracks felt stale and formulaic.

I enjoyed the Boygenius record well enough, but yeah agreed that it kind of felt like Phoebe was phoning it in a little.

But it also made me go back and listen to Julien Baker's first album again, and drat that's basically a perfect 30 minutes. I haven't vibed as much with her follow ups, but that first one is still an all time great.

This is probably the wrong thread but I dunno where else…. Incant stop listening to Sturgill Simpson. His vocals, his music ; my god he’s good. Totally underrated.

In other news this bluegrass banjo lady Nora Brown?? Her new album is outstanding. I listen to a lot of instrumental bluegrass or banjo while reading.

Phoebe is probably the weakest songwriter in boygenius, but still pretty cool. Also the least gay. Coincidence??

In a similar vein, I really liked Zach Brown's American Heartbreak from last year. It's more of a collection of songs than an album so feel free to put it on shuffle and skip around

The New Pornographers are one of my top bands. I definitely kind of disliked the new album at first, but it’s definitely grown on me after a few listens. One or two energetic songs would have helped balanced the album a bit I think. I really love the title track and how haunting and depressing it is. However, I think it should have been the album closer.
