Nah, just a time sink. I had a lot of fun in grad school. Arguably more than undergrad. But 100% agree on the academia being a sucker's job thing. If it weren't for my sugar momma, I'd have to go back to feds doing DOE poo poo. If I do get tenure track, I'm doing it at the CSU schools because gently caress that publish or perish until tenure poo poo. They're like "oh hey, publish a couple papers, submit a few grants before tenure and it's all good". Of course they *also* pay poo poo, even for tenure track. I got paid more in my first year at the DOE (in the US South!) than what my department head makes here in California.

I don't have a png of it but I had to sit on a sales call for a training platform today and it had all the magic buttons to make my boss's boss happy, since he's got gen X manager brain AI! User Metrics Tracking! Social Media Features! QR Codes! The QR codes really tickled the pleasure center of his brain. He interrupted the presentation to gush about how great it would be to be able to include a QR code on an SOP and then if someone has a question about how to do something they can pull up a video and watch it. The service being sold isn't a training company, nor are they a video production company. They just license a platform where we can host stuff we make ourselves. Meanwhile he got really agitated we asked "So this presentation showed X, can it do Y? Because we're required to do Y?"

When I was in grad school for physics they paid us $100 over the qualification limit for foodstamps. At the first year orientation they also talked about not even trying to hold another job because you'll flunk out within 6 months.
