aside from "because i want one" you get basements for a couple main reasons. Up north you need them to put the foundation of your house below the frostline, or you'd have the whole house move with frost heaves. So even in the mountains you'd get houses with basements - and the requisite radon mitigation. I think the second reason is to spread the foundation load wider. Soil compaction/movement is weird and it depends on local geology a lot.

There are options that the cost is pretty reasonable when weighed against getting shredded to deaths.

tornados are endemic, only crazy people worry about them. it's time we take down the warning sirens that only exist to scare people.

once the child labor law is effective, 12 year old boys will be able to manually crank the tornado sirens for thirty five cents an hour

I'm gonna be real, someone in there was actively monitoring weather feeds for news, the guy came right in when asked and was told it was a tornado, they stayed inside until it had been clear awhile, and it's not like there was a megastorm going on otherwise or even sirens. Dumb to hold the door in that scenario but I've seen and heard of people acting way dumber than that in heart of tornado country. That guy blows them off and he's probably toast.

It's better than comparable entry level pay but the hours are kind of inconsistent

They did last time I lived there, doubt that going to change.

I have family in little rock and its really bad. House I grew up in (family sold it when we moved) is likely gone based kn the damage to the walnut Valley neighborhood.

Sirens are not warnings jfc

This storm had a tornado warning on it for hours. A tornado watch was issued hours ahead of time. Severe weather was forecast for DAYS ahead of time.
