Up north you need them to put the foundation of your house below the frostline, or you'd have the whole house move with frost heaves. So even in the mountains you'd get houses with basements - and the requisite radon mitigation. I think the second reason is to spread the foundation load wider. Soil compaction/movement is weird and it depends on local geology a lot.

I'm gonna be real, someone in there was actively monitoring weather feeds for news, the guy came right in when asked and was told it was a tornado, they stayed inside until it had been clear awhile, and it's not like there was a megastorm going on otherwise or even sirens. Dumb to hold the door in that scenario but I've seen and heard of people acting way dumber than that in heart of tornado country. That guy blows them off and he's probably toast.
