If I recall the armidale patrol boat was initially designed and built with the white ensign directly in the path of the smoke funnel. Took a year or two before someone wrote a report "hmm maybe we should move the flag, we have to keep replacing them this is ridiculous, who put it there?". Quite an obvious outcome to anyone who understood what those funny things that emit smoke on ships are for. Australian designed & made.

Even for the latter they push as hard to retain domestic control in maintenance and upgrades as possible, and some people are pissed buying overpriced trashfire DRMed F-35s are violating that principle

Quite an obvious outcome to anyone who understood what those funny things that emit smoke on ships are for. The finest traditions of the service, going back to Dreadnought, “Unfortunately, the effectiveness of the system was greatly degraded by positioning the mast abaft the forward funnel so that access to the top was difficult due to heat whilst visibility, particularly with a wind from astern, was bad.” “This selection of sketches (by R Perkins) illustrates the problems of upper deck layout in Dreadnought battleships. Blast from the big guns could affect exposed personnel in control positions, at secondary armament and, through the sighting hoods in the turret roofs, gun crews in other turrets, which seemed to rule out superfiring turrets in the early ships. Since increasing the length of the armoured citadel was very expensive, funnels and masts were very cramped and in many ships, the spotting top was in the hot, thick exhaust plume from the funnels.” “Dreadnought. To some extent, her layout derived from Agamemnon with the latter’s 9.2in guns replaced with 12in turrets. The mast was placed behind the funnel on Jellicoe’s advice to suit boat handling, which often rendered the foretoo untenable from heat and fumes.” “This photo clearly shows the difficulties in arranging the superstructure of Dreadnoughts. The blast from the wing turrets would cause structural damage if fired closer than about 30° from the axis. The foremast and its top is ahead of the funnel (just) but the main mast and its secondary spotting top is in the plume from the forward funnel and was almost useless. ” “By 1908 the difficulties suffered by all spotting tops were realised and it was suggested by the C-in-C Home Fleet (Sir Francis Bridgeman) that masts were a hazard and that spotting should be carried out from an armoured position on the roof of the conning tower. The advantage of the high spotting top lay first in the greater horizon range, roughly proportional to the square root of the height, but it was argued that in typical North Sea weather it was rarely possible to see the horizon anyway. A well-placed top should also be clear of both funnel smoke and that from fires started in action.”

OT for thread but following the google discussion, I was able to solve a minor Bermuda Triangle mystery based upon reading sources not available online, about the apocryphal "Ellen Austin," a ship which found a derelict adrift and attempted to tow it to port: 2 sets of crew members were sent over to handle it and both disappeared, quite spookily, and then the derelict disappeared into the fog. Triangle researcher Lawrence David Kusch chalked it up to an invented tale but could find no original source for it, though the story was repeated across many paperbacks of the '70s. I was reading a collection of William Hope Hodgson stories when I came across "The Mystery of the Waterlogged Ship" from 1911, the first half of which matches the Ellen Austin tale beat for beat. I haven't tracked its first usage as a Triangle story either, but I'm betting on John Vincent Gaddis as he was an early Triangle popularizer and none too meticulous when it came to sourcing. I've got a couple titles of his I've yet to read through. A relatively simple matter all told but another illustration of our impoverished internet.

Yeah I put a like a 20lbs monitor on the ergotron and it was fine. But that was about the maximum weight it could support without any problems starting to show up. It's also a real pain in the rear end to mount something that heavy on the arm.
