Milo and POTUS posted:Oh yeah? what if I seal off the apartment and pump it full of an inert gas? Will they know when I'm breathing then? Fun fact: The only pesticides left that work on them are adjacent to actual chemical weapons, so the size of the pest you're fumigating is largely determined by how much you spill on your hands. Basically the only commercially viable method of ridding a home of bed bugs is to cook them. Heat the entire house to 120+ F for several hours and you kill the living bugs, the larvae, and the eggs, leaving your home blessedly bed bug free, until the next time your stoner room mate brings home a 'free' couch.

I remember about 15 years ago I lived in an apartment complex with 5 large-ish buildings with about 50-70 units each and somebody had brought home some bed bugs from deployment. The entire building (thankfully not mine) had to be evacuated while they did their thing fumigating the entire building. Took 2-3 days and was a real pain in the rear end.

iirc bed bugs don't carry any disease and can be managed easily by using steam using a steamer (which instantly kills them), isolating your bed, and dusting with diatomaceous earth. Having a company heat the house to around 120F will also kill them but it's kind of the nuclear option. pesticides are basically useless against them now.

By the time I moved out of my bed bug apartment, I was sleeping on a bare mattress surrounded by diatomaceous earth and dressing in my car. There was a fine coat of diatomaceous earth all over every surface of my house, and i had a perpetual chest infection from breathing it in. They were still there.

Bedbugs horrify me. If we're hanging out and you even mention having a problem with them, I'm leaving. Nothing personal, I just don't have the time or energy to deal with that poo poo at all. I count myself extremely lucky that, of all the things my absolute wasteman former roommate did to this apartment, he never brought in bedbugs.

Also, like sure, you can technically live covered in these parasites because you won't get dengue or whatever, but come on.

I had bedbugs once and it was still the worst thing I've ever been through. In part because of extremely strict bed bug laws and an absentee landlord, but also just because it loving sucks. It's illegal here to attempt to self-treat bedbugs in a rental property because it's highly likely that you will miss some and if you miss even one or two, they will lie dormant for 1-2 years before re-emerging and infesting the next tenant (or you in your new apartment, if they were in your furniture), also because things like DE cause them to scatter and run, often driving them out of your apartment into your neighbors' and spreading the infestation. I will never buy used furniture again (upholstered or not) because it's not worth the risk and I will immediately walk out of someone's home if they say they self-treated bedbugs. The only two appropriate ways to treat them are a poison treatment or a heat treatment. The heat treatment is the easier/faster/safer of the two and requires heating the entire room until literally every surface (including the cracks and crevasses) is at least 113 degrees and keeping it at that temperature for at least 90 minutes. It could ruin some of your things but it's the nuclear option which, in the case of bed bugs, should be your first option, because once it's done it's done, if it's done correctly there's no possibility that any survived. The other option involves sorting everything you own into giant sealed ziploc bags, then having the room fumigated and letting it sit for a while before going back in and carefully picking your things out of the bags while examining them for bedbugs. deep dish peat moss fucked around with this message at 03:08 on Apr 4, 2023 |

Also if you ever start to freak out because of bug bites and think you might have bed bugs, the tell-tale sign is that they will bite you in several places along a straight line, because they bite, take a few steps, bite again, etc. until they find the good place to suck blood from. You then have like a week to get rid of them before you're covered head-to-toe

We had bed bugs in 2016 and while my husband had no reaction to the bites, my bites swelled up to the diameter of a golf ball and itched more than anything else I've ever felt. We got the house fumigated twice and ended up throwing a ton of stuff away. A lot of what we did keep I sealed in plastic bags and left in my hot car in the sun for weeks. edit: I've had fleas in the house too. I'd much rather have fleas than bedbugs.

They don't carry diseases that we know of, hard emphasis on know of. Diatomaceous earth is not the preferred option anymore as it can cause some pretty bad respiratory illnesses if used incorrectly, and is not great for pets. The powder option now is a silica absorbent. Instead of acting as a slow abrasive like the dia. earth, it dries out the bed bug's shell till they crack open. It will stick to them and keep drying out the waxy outer layer coating them. Still need to be careful if you have pets that go sniffing around, but I'm pretty sure it's mich less harmful to people, and a lot simpler to apply. Depending on humidity it can last for a year or more, combine it with the same isolating practices and religiously washing and drying your bedding. Also drying your clothes constantly, every time you leave the house or return home. If they walk through the powder to get to you, they will die in 2-3 days, they feed very roughly once a week, and the dia. earth can sometimes not kill them before they molt after a blood meal. Only the adults can go dormant, disrupting them in the multiple nymph and juvenile molt stages is the best option. Most poisons do gently caress all to them, they originally were nearly eradicated because people slept on deet soaked mattresses, silica powder plus isolation or heat treatment. Fumigating does not have a high success rate and is a bad cheaper option that landlords would do instead of heat treatment. There is a shitload of misinformation out there.

A guy I worked with was a Jim's pest control guy (Aussie chain). He was called in to treat an insect infestation in a government housing complex for people who need care. The facility was overseen by some Court judge in some aspect and poo poo really hit the fan. The staff at a medical centre who do health checks noticed one lady who comes in on a motor scooter had bites all over her, and was really unwell and complained she couldnt sleep due to the bites, she was resorting to sleeping in her motor scooter. The medical staff are not allowed to visit the housing complex for some reason. My coworker was given access and noticed the room was very dark, and went to open these heavy purple curtains. They were not purple, they were covered in bed bugs. As the light poured in he saw the surface of the coffee table move. The infestation was insane, his boss chided him for not recording it. Every item had to be gassed and bagged and stored in containers, including the motor scooter which had bugs all Inside it, every inch of the apartment was infested, and many adjacent dwellings as well. When the Judge found out many staff were fired for doing little to nothing.
