so far the threat seems to be south of DFW closer to waco, round 1 was loud but not particularly dangerous, but the stuff building out west is probably going to have a lot of instability to build on.

growing up in oklahoma the sirens were loud as gently caress, you could definitely hear them inside, and hearing one made everyone pay attention.

weird that there were none in that video.

people ignore cellphones. hell, my parents, who still live there and are retired, only really pay attention when they hear sirens.

maybe we should... develop and maintain systems to peoples' behavior, not expect people to learn new systems? crazy thought

We need to transition from protecting everyone from tornados to a market‐based system that focuses protection on the rich the elderly.

it's so funny. it's like something out of a movie where a character only very narrowly avoids death and doesn't even know it happened.

wikipedia helpfully maintains a list of all the times tornados have hit densely populated areas. this isn't Little Rock's first rodeo but it's the worst one.

When I was a kid in Memphis, people used to always tell me that "well the bluffs make the tornados not hit us" when i'd be your typical scared kid about it.

I never really researched it and now I wonder how much of that was just direct bullshit / anecdotal

Here's a documented tornado at 10,500 feet.

Yeah, I got that, too. A tornado went through my neighborhood in east Memphis and caused a rather tall tree to fall on my neighbor’s roof, so I always knew that wasn’t entirely true.

I fear a lot of people in this city probably don’t take the tornado alarms seriously. They go off every Wednesday and Saturday, so it kinda becomes part of the background.
