You 100% can do this with movies and TV shows fairly easily.

One famous example that came to mind is John Wayne and Howard Hawks making essentially the exact same movie three times in like a decade (Rio Bravo, El Dorado, and Rio Lobo).

I think when we are getting Shrek 5, frozen 3, and s live remake of moana less than 7-8 years after release we can say that people will keep paying for the same thing vs try something new, but also they are out of ideas and afraid to take risks because money. Though I don't think it's kind of fair to expect new things from capitalist children's media when kids just want to see the same thing 1000x

We have also been making jokes about unnecessary sequels for like 40 years. It's not anything new.

"Yes I can hear you, I don't have ear cancer!"

It’s just such a boring, toothless critique. It’s not like Dreamworks was going to make the Citizen Kane of animated children’s movies but instead decided to greenlight Shrek 5. We just finished a run of several years where Netflix and Hulu etc etc threw millions of dollars at anyone with a half-baked idea to make a movie to fill out their catalogs. Lots of them were bad but they still got out there! There are plenty of people out there telling new and interesting stories now and it’s trivially easy to get them so the whole complaint is just kind of a  from me.

I think there's a fun dynamic where Hollywood execs are incredibly risk-averse, while Silicon Valley types will throw a billion dollars at Uber for Dogs if they hear a good-enough pitch. Though I guess the latter is easier when you're spending someone else's money (and may be happening less often after SVB went under)

tv and hollywood spent multiple decades just churning out hundreds of westerns and they were often very formulaic. Boomers were inundated with them throughout their childhoods and IMO this is quietly one of the factors that poisoned that generation's minds and outlook, the myth of the free, lawless west, conquered by square-jawed independent libertarian heroes (white men) with guns

Can’t remember if it was here but someone referred to it as the Diet Coke of class politics and I really agreed with that take, kept teasing me with fun stuff but never really followed through. Ray Fiennes is always rad though!

This was one of my points when I was bitching about numerous apps bloating my phone to a friend. Thank Christ the bands I listen to rarely sell via Ticketmaster, but the cost of that is they’re all sold on a different app every time, and the same one is almost never used twice so you’re always forced to install an app, complete your purchase, hang onto the app for however long until the show happens, and then finally get rid of it.
