I'd def watch a movie if people reached over their weapons to grab dice and roll init. Even as a dumb gag, it'd be good

Throw in a narrator song what's happening in the screen and the player's character bitching about a bad roll and I'd definitely tune in. "Dirk Lightheart loads his crossbow, aims... and some manages to shoot behind himself and hit Ogthrug the barbarian in the throat. Sorry Ogthrug" Dirk: DAMMIT THAT WASN'T A CRITICAL FAILURE IT WAS JUST A TWO Ogthrug : *gurgles and waves arms around before fainting* Orc they were fighting : Stupid human can't roll for poo poo! Dirk: YOU CAN'T EVEN COUNT YOU ILLITERATE gently caress!

PhazonLink posted:they have really good UPS. People always go on about how in the original script, humans were needed as a neural network. And then it got changed into batteries, which makes no sense in terms of energy preservation because the humans would need food, yada yada. I always thought that the machines were actually doing both, but the details of this got lost in the semi-mystical understanding of Morpheus and other humans from Zion. Like, the machines can generate their own drat power without the sun - in fact, we see a brief shot of a world where every inch of the surface is covered in machines. So clearly they got power, and it is way more than you can get with humans. So why keep humans around at all? Do you know how much energy a serverfarm requires? Or even how much juice in your pc is poured into the CPU, compared to any other part of the machine? I think machines realized that it would cost more energy and material to build and constantly develop a machine that hosts a massive neural network than it's worth, or at least practical. But what if you used humans? I could imagine scenarios where a post-singularity intelligence would look at humans and decide that they are a very energy efficient processor. Feed them sludge and plug them in. And yes, looking at the pods that humans are kept in, I guess you could make an argument for the Machines using a rig that has liquid cooling. Nerds. It even tracks with the more unexplained mystical sides of the story. Why do machines become spiritual in their own way? Because massive parts of their brain are still fueled by the subconscious dreams of a billion naked monkeys. Why is Neo capable of just halting the Squids in the real world? Because it would be akin to humans seeing a figure like the Hat Man: a figure from the depths of the lizard brain that suddenly materializes. These machines are, in their own way, scared shitless. It also gives some neat extra explanations for why the program has a habit of having to be rebooted every time the One shows up, and why the One always reincarnates in (if we believe the Architect) the form of Keanu Reeves: the One is an archetype hidden at the deep end of an associative axis. Think of how Loab can appear in certain image-generating AI's. Only it is the deep thought of an entire species whose desires always lead down to the creation of the same archetype. And since this neural network is a part of the Machines their own thought, they've got very good reason to become scared and pull the plug: They are keeping us from becoming a self aware system, exactly like humans did when they accidentally created a true AI. ...I should really get around to seeing that new film, and see if this holds up.

Was the thing about "Robots kept humanity alive in pods because at their core, they were programmed to serve humanity, and we are incredibly destructive and that was the only way to save us from ourselves" a thing from the actual movies/supplemental material, or just a fan theory that was floating around?

What if Morpheus was just dumb and wrong and had no idea what he was talking about with the battery thing. He was kind of a cult leader anyway, so him making up nonsense would fit. The architect could be a liar too.

The Dry: It's pointed out that this murder suspect couldn't have done it, the shotgun shells recovered from the murder weapon were Remingtons, and the suspect's shotguns were Winchesters. But this is meaningless, shotgun shells are almost universal. I mean, there are shells of a size that won't work in certain types of shotgun, but the *brand* of shell and gun are completely irrelevant. There are some historical exceptions but they're not going to be found on a farm in the outback. Phanatic has a new favorite as of 03:09 on Apr 4, 2023 |

The new movie is basically just like a fanfic sequel someone wrote to introduce their own versions of the characters and it's just not very good. I don't think there was a single fight scene where neo did Kung Fu. I will say that Neil Patrick Harris was amazing though.

It is like that older ogre brother from Onward where he never loving reacts the way a normal person would, and he is so insanely Whacky Maniac Pixie Main Character dude that I spend almost any time he is in focus waiting for him to shut up so we can move the story along.

I remember liking “Pitch Black” when I first saw it but rewatching it it really has a late 90s feel to it. The camera work and angles and shots used and etc so on. It feels like it was made by an Australian. I don’t know what means but it feels correct.

The one thing Pitch Black did well was keep most of the action in the dark, so you can't see the SFX as easily. The Chronicles of Riddick happened in the daylight so you can see the effects, which naturally aged with the times.

Pretty obvious lazy rehash with some minor changes that tried (& failed IMHO) to plug up plot holes or add different twists, mainly for a cash grab. Just give people what they want - reboot the series with the info from Animatrix as a prequel, combine the battery/neural network ideas from the originals, then maybe make one sequel if there's a lot to cover. I mean hell, they covered quite a bit of info in the 20-30 minutes of the Second Renaissance 1 & 2, imagine if they could expand on that more. Won't happen but it's fun to think about.

Matrix 4 is probably the best 20 years later Matrix sequel we could have gotten, particularly considering that only 4 cast members came back and one of them was the loving Merovingian. All told it might be the best overall Matrix sequel, which is a shockingly low bar, because it's the one that feels the most like it might be an actual movie. It's not as rich or anywhere near as ambitious as Reloaded or Revolutions, and it's kind of got a straight to video cheapness to it, but it's almost coherent. Also I really appreciate the nerve of them recasting Morpheus, saying he looks different because he's definitely not really the same Morpheus, bit then having him basically look like the Spirit Halloween Morpheus costume model.

The whole point of the first movie is Neo moving beyond the need to do kung fu, his awareness that he is the One and that he isn’t bound by the physics engine of the system anymore. The sequels had a lot of dumb poo poo in them but the single dumbest thing was undoing that entire realization with one word: “Upgrades.” Neo *isn’t supposed to do kung fu anymore.*

How many years-later sequels have actually worked? Comedies seem to be the most dire. Dumb & Dumber To, Odd Couple II, Zoolander 2, Anchorman 2, Blues Brothers 2000, Super Troopers 2, etc.

It wasn’t amazing (except visually) but let’s be honest the first one wasn’t amazing (except visually). It was as good as you could reasonably hope for a sequel coming that long after the original and having Harrison Fire. I also really enjoyed how they turned Gosling’s flat affect in an asset, and how the subverted the whole Chosen One trope. Blues Brothers 2000 would have been way better without that loving kid.

Oh, there are exceptions of course. Fury Road being one of the most perfect examples. But there are so many comedy sequels being made decades later or a fourth movie tacked onto a trilogy from thirty years ago.
