The weirdest retcon that is just sort of tossed into some flashback narration in the last issue of Gotham City: Year One is: Slam Bradley was apparently the only white person in Gotham who wasn't racist as all hell in the 1950s... because he's actually a light skinned black man who has passed as white all these years, and he became a cop to discover which cop murdered his non-passing brother! And when he couldn't figure it out he quit the force to become a private investigator. And also just never mentioned his brother or how he's black, like ever, to anyone, until he's dying and he wants to tell Batman about how his grandpa used the Batcave as his fuckpad back in the day.

There is also an open question of how Batman's grandpa was shot in the head and killed by his grandma when his dead aunt was still an infant, and then... somehow the widow Batgrandma gets pregnant again and gives birth to Batdad years later? but maybe this one is down to a line of exposition I missed and/or comic book artists not being able to draw babies/toddlers/children well, and the tiny pre-verbal/non-ambultory baby in the crib was written to be a four year old.

there's never been any indication that Black Label books are inherently non-canon any more than Marvel MAX, which published both canon and non-canon books.

It can easily be assumed to be non-canon unless otherwise explicitly indicated given the titles under the label, of which at least a significant majority of which are obviously non-canon.

It's not Black Label, and like Alaois said Black Label is not automatically out of continuity either. I'm not sure either of the things I spoiled make a lot more sense outside of DC continuity, especially the "how are babies made" question, which would be an even bigger curveball to introduce 90% of the way through a self-contained story

I dunno, either way it's a baffling use of Fairchild.

I get the idea that Mr. Majestic is some kid who's just taking up the name.

I know in the Wildstorm special, Majestic was still on the Earth of Worldstorm and is an older man but who knows if any of that is canon.

Also wasn't Fairchild a 13 year old in the original books, just in an adult body? I can't remember. Gen13 was always a bit sketchy with its characters.

She's functionally She-Hulk. A nerdy college girl on the small side who gets turned into a brick shithouse with double D's.

When the New 52 started, she was... in charge of the Teen Titans? Or the Ravagers? Or maybe the organization that was hunting teen heroes? I can't remember. Those books were confusing and terrible.

She popped up in Chris Claremont's Gen13 too after a while, which of course. That one I mostly remember for how painful it was to read Claremont write 'teen' dialogue and also the Japanese character summoned a dragon as her power.

I've decided to get back into comics after over a decade of not paying attention to them and for whatever reason I decided to get into some DC titles despite being a Marvel fan for decades. I'm old.

Anyway, I got into DC because I saw that Wildcats was back! One of my favorite comics as a kid! I think I had every issue of the original run. Are there other Image titles being revived? What and how did they get here? Where can I read how those characters came into the mainstream?

I also grabbed the first issue of the new JSA. I'm completely lost but it's a fun ride. I always liked JSA over JLA so I'm looking forward to more.

Also is everything being rebooted? Is that just how comics are now? The last time I read DC was the Crisis event 15 or so years ago when Superboy died.

Nice! I recommend Savage Dragon over at Image, it's still going and stars Dragon's son Malcom Dragon these days. Also heartily recommend reading Invincible there too. As somebody who enjoys the highlights of early Image, those are some of the best most cohesive and fun books published in recent years.

It is one of the most interesting comics currently produced in a big way. It can definitely be horny as hell, but it is definitely way less dumb than it was when Larsen made the switch.

Absolutely a fantastic slice of life book set in a sometimes inexplicable comic book universe.

Unpopular opinion most likely, but I do not like Kelley Jones main book Batman art. It was good for the Vampire batman elseworlds, but not for the main book.

I actually agree? I like him as a cover artist too, but outside of those Elseworld stories I find him a bit too stylized to follow properly.

I love Jones art but understand that it is so weird and out there and not for everyone.
It is so different and creates a more gothic expressionist vibe for Batman which is so strange to have for a mainstream monthly ongoing book.

Skull Servant

I absolutely don't mean to imply he isn't a great artist because he is. I can also understand how people can generally like a monthly book illustrated by him. I just feel like he is best when working on individual pieces or comics tailored to his style. I have similar views on Alex Ross - I can easily read Kingdom Come but I've struggled with his other work.

There's some people disappointed that Jon doesn't get the opportunity to properly get closure with the man who kidnapped and abused him for 6 years of his life which is fair, but real life isn't so pretty like that sometimes and I trust Tom Taylor to handle this properly.

His batman work is pretty good too. Funnily enough His stories are more city liberal in tone than conservative. I wonder what happened. 9/11?

Edit: looking at the list of writers and Dixon could Crack the top 5 if his output stays good through mo man's land.

Edit 2: through June 1995 I would say Alan Grant is thr best batman writer of all time with Denny o'neill very close. Norm breyfogle, Neal adams or Jim Aparo are the best artist. That is harder to choose.
