Ok what if... I just make the engine run backwards?

You'd need new camshafts, some loving around with the ECU and starter motor, on older engines it's doable I think but on a 23 model it seems impractical.

Cool, the RV world is completely different than anything I've dealt with. Kudos to your uncle for keeping it going, cool story.

This particular RV (GMC) is completely different from most RVs. The FWD and swing axles in the rear allowed it to be much lower, and have a flat floor all the way back. It's also an all-fiberglass body.

They're pretty cool, and were fairly advanced for the time.

No it isn't. The Toro/Caddy TH425 setup is longitudinal. A normal LS will bolt up with BOP adapters.

Actually, that may not be the small block you want to go with in this setup.

How much are used Corvette transaxles going for on the used market these days? Probably one of the cheaper 500+hp rated mid engine transaxles out there

The Peugeot 404 had worm drive.

"Instead of a conventional crown wheel and pinion differential design, the 404 had a worm drive, allegedly to create a lower rear axle profile for extra suspension travel. Its bronze internals required a special castor oil blend."

What you need is a 911 gearbox and whatever you can find to attach to that and fit in the space.

I think an old air-cooled VW transmission would work as well, no? That'd probably be fine for the amount of power that'd come from a 3-cylinder.

I think a Subaru transaxle could be made to work as well, but you'd need a reverse-cut ring and pinion to make it spin the right way (I think that's something that exists), and to disable/cover the driveshaft that'd normally power the rear wheels.

Type1 yes. Most bus transmissions like the 5/6 rib will need R/P replacements.

They both are easy to get gears for. The subaru box is a semi popular alternative in the vw sand toy crowd.

If Ford had produced its T-drive there probably would have been. We'll just have to settle for a transverse Inline 8 in a Tempo instead...

If you use the standard definition of engine in front of the rear axle and behind the front axle, a bunch of them.

e:
The Auto Union Type A, B, and C cars were all rear-mid engined V-16s.

ee: The Cizeta-Moroder V16T had a rear-mid transverse V-16

Type 1 flipped upside down with hewland internals is one of the go-to setups for vintage racing, all the gear sets you could ever want.

Mid engine, tiny displacement (1.5l), huge supercharger, front wheel drive, dual overhead cam from the 1920s https://silodrome.com/miller-91-race-car/

Well sure using that definition all Bugatti made until the 30s was mostly inline 8 mid engine

Maybe what the world really needs is a 5.3L inline 8 bolted to a Porsche G50, hanging out the back. We can call it 'badonkadonk'
