I wasted a lot of time playing a pick that was too thick and hurting my wrist on long gigs (3sets). I switched down to a Jazz III XL which is like 1.0mm but still would occasionally get sore. Started using my guitar yellow tortex picks and haven’t looked back. Just turn my amp gain up a bit and pick away all night.

I like to use my fingers with acoustic instruments and then a pick for electric guitar/bass. I feel like finger-style playing gives you the best variety of different tones whereas a pick gives the best tonal clarity, and for me personally I feel like my dynamics and timing are slightly more accurate and consistent with a pick so that's what I ended up preferring for the bass. I eventually settled on using the red .50mm D'Addario DuraGrip picks, they're like tortex picks but slightly larger. My fingers and wrists get tired after like 1 song with a thicker pick.

I can't get the feel for picks down at all. I feel like I have very little control over when the pick actually comes off the string, screwing up my timing compared to fingers. I have a variety of picks here I got from my grandfather, from .46 Martins to .71 ChromaCasts. And a bunch of these small-but-thickass Dunlop Eric Johnson picks that look to be 1.38mm.

Try going heavy, maybe. I jump between a 3mm Big Stubby jazz, Dunlop Flow 420 and some 5mm thing that I think is also Dunlop on guitar, but use picks if my fingers are sore from dermatitis when playing bass. I find a heavier pick requires less effort and gives me more control, but ultimately individual results may differ.

I've used a variety of pick thicknesses, when I'm relaxed or practicing a .73 flow has been fine but gigging I've needed 1mm tortex or more because I'm down-stroking harder. I need to get more of those dunlop demo packs of bass picks to see what else I can try. The flow picks are great though because they've got good feel and tension and aren't slippery.

When I played my new-to-me Jag Bass back-to-back with my trusty Jazz 5 and Precision Special the other week at rehearsal, I realized just how freaking dead my strings are. So, some nickel-plated Fender sets are on the way from Sweetwater: a set of 45-110's for the 4-string (it lives tuned down a step), 45-125's for the 5-string, and their current set of Bass VI strings, since that one hasn't had new strings in a couple years. (The old stock strings had a low E string less than .090 in diameter, which I guess was them matching the gauge used back when they were using flats, which have more tension--they've corrected this since then.) But then I thought, man, I (and my guitarist!) love the tone from my "ClnCrunch" patch on the Zoom B3n. Now, I can't replace my rig with the Zoom--it doesn't do the octave and envelope filter stuff nearly as well as my pedalboard can; the Zoom is just for practice at home and jamming, when space and/or laziness stops me from using my main pedalboard. But, the MXR DI+ emulation is the basis for that great tone, so I went to Sweetwater and got one after watching a bunch of videos. I'm going to take the overdrive* and EQ** off my board and put the DI+ at the very end of the effect chain. That means the chorus† will be before the non-fuzz distortion‡, but I'm not a 1980s metal guitarist, so I won't be using chorus and distortion at the same time. I want the chorus before the MXR mainly because it'll let the MXR be more than a DI and distortion--it can actually function as a proper DI if need be. *: MXR Bass Overdrive, which is OK but tends to really rob the tone, even with the tone control all the way up **: Boss Bass EQ, which really lets you shape the tone, but I've found that it can be really touchy, and I don't need 7-band granularity †: Electro-Harmonix Bass Clone ‡: Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Bass Big Muff π

Does anyone here tune down to G on their 5? My band has one song I'd like to double the guitar an octave down on and I could use my 35.5 scale 5 string, and since we play in D standard... In the long run I'll probably just use a nice octave down for that part but for now I've got a 5 string, and I'd like to know what string gauge you guys would use. 145? edit: alternatively, if you can recommend a good bass pedal that i can set to just drop 1 octave cleanly, that would be appreciated muike fucked around with this message at 05:10 on Apr 14, 2023 |

I was in a band a few years ago with guitarists who tuned a step down, and sometimes they'd drop their bottom string down a step for Drop C or, when they got 7-strings, Drop G. I did the same on my 5, which I think just has a 34" scale length. I used a hefty set of strings for that. I ordered from Kallium until I got tired of their wildly inconsistent service. Eventually, I just bought D'Addario sets with a .110" E string and a single .145" for the "B" string. Also, that ultra-low G is almost useless musically. It kind-of works for long notes; for anything quick, the frequency is just too low to sound good.

Winding down after the gig and the drive from hell, and what's on MTV Classics? "Venus." Specifically, the Bananarama version. I forgot that was the name of the group that did the version of the song I know the best. So naturally, I said the name out loud. "Bananarama." My wife affirmed my analysis of the situation. Then I added, "OR RAM A BANANA? FUCKIN' BARRY MANILOW ON THE COPA CABANA!!!!!" Had an OK-ish gig. Played some stuff wrong in one set because I didn't practice enough, but I got it sorted out quickly. I did manage to play the verses of "The Bad Touch" in the wrong loving key for the whole song, but the envelope filter made that seem almost on purpose to anyone who isn't a musician. My favorite moment was when we started "Closing Time" and the guitarist told me I was loving it up. "It's in G!" But I am playing in G!, I mouthed to him. Then I looked at my Pitch Fork, and it was not set to 1 Octave. It was set to m7, and on that song, the blend is set to almost all wet signal. Jesus.

If I remember right, that MXR isn't actually isolated based on a teardown. Could be a different SKU but they're so much cheaper than the competition, it makes me suspicious. A decent power supply will last over multiple board iterations, and in my opinion it's worth spending a little extra with the comfort that you just don't have to ever think about it again unless your board goes in a wildly different direction (in which case you're already dumping money into it).

You can still daisy chain pedals together from a single outlet. I'm running 11 pedals on an 8 outlet Voodoo Labs power supply. As long as the total mA pull is less than the mA of the outlet, you'll be fine.

That's not a bad idea, and is probably the most practical terms in regard to what I was thinking. I was hoping I just didn't realize I had a piece of equipment sitting around that I could use for it but I think ultimately to do what I have in mind I'd have to run through my helix or something.

Passive summation at the end of a chain can have a lot of signal loss/degradation depending on what the chain looks like. The best result would be achieved with an active mixer before sending the signal to either an amp or the PA

This has been my idea for a while - run the fuzz pedal through the bridge pickup and then leave the neck pickup clean to maintain the low end (never been happy with the dry blend on my bass muff pi) you need a Stereo Y cable and then some way to bring the signals back together which might get weird as mentioned. the setup is really designed to go to two different amplifiers so the two signals never see eachother.

Doing it as you described will result in a tone similar to the blend on the pedal, nondescript low end with a layer of fizz on top.

Pedal board power chat: I ended up ordering this guy: https://www.swamp.net.au/swamp-iso-10-isolated-power-supply-station-for-guitar-effects-pedals because it was local and postage was free. it arrived today. I dont have my pedal board here to test as its at the studio but i have a few loose boss pedals i can gently caress around with later to see how it works. plenty of included cables and the USB port was a nice touch. I have some party lights i could run off the USB port since it seems lighting techs are either non existent or uninterested around here.

So far I've played a little over half a dozen shows with the Ampeg SGT-DI... Still loving it. Still not planning on getting rid of my VT Bass, but I don't anticipate swapping it back onto my board any time soon. I still don't really have much of a use for the cabsim, but it's nice to know it's still there if I ever decide to go down that rabbit hole. It also sounds absolutely wonderful pumped through our massive PA at church.

I was getting frustrated by not getting the exact sound I wanted so I broke my no gear while between jobs rule and got the Caline Wine Cellar, a $30 Sansamp knockoff. Only been using it a day but it seems good, it took a lot less fiddling to get a clear, punchy sound out of it than through my guitar amps. Once Im working again I might put together a small, super budget bass pedalboard with it

The clean setting with the Color switch engaged is just about perfect, although I use the 3-band EQ to add some mids to help me cut through the mix some. Its switchable distortion circuit is great for that just-breaking-up sound without zapping a lot of treble and bass, which is what I've experienced with a lot of more traditional overdrives. Cranking the gain yields a nice distortion. Between this pedal and my Deluxe Bass Big Muff, I've got the dirt covered.

One cheap thing to try when you have GAS is to rearrange the furniture and amp placement in your practice area. You're likely just habituated to the current tone and moving stuff around will make a difference

It is surprisingly un-noisy until you crank the drive, which the drive knob is hilarious because it barely increases until you get to like 3 oclock and then it goes from 10 to 100 in a hairs width of a turn. I’m still learning how to get the right amount of harmonics to sound good without sounding too pick scrape-y but in lieu having an actual bass amp due to poor it is pretty good

I've done that with a solid-state amp... My old rear end Ampeg B2R started overheating due to the cooling fan burning out, which would result in my signal just randomly cutting out in later sets. So I started turning it off in between sets and put a little mini desk fan in the back of the rack case. Half the time I'd get back on stage for the next set and wonder why I was only hearing myself in FOH.
