They were early members of the NWA and broke off in the 1960s because they thought having their own champion outside of the NWA cartel (Buddy Rogers, then Bruno) would do better business in their market than Lou Thesz would. Doing so also allowed the NWA to avoid further antitrust/monopoly investigations that were happening in the 1950s, because the NWA could point to how Vince McMahon Sr. and Verne Gagne were successfully running their own 'independent' promotions without being part of the NWA. Which was technically true, except they both continued to attend (or send representatives) to the NWA meetings, held positions on the NWA board, and shared talent/respected each other's territorial boundaries. It wasn't until the 1980s that Vince Jr. started stomping all over the territorial boundaries and talent sharing in a serious way. Arguably Vince Jr. turned the WWF into an outlaw mudshow indie.
