3ds is my vote. The ability to quick save and put the game down just about anywhere is nice.

I'd say go with the 3DS version, as it is more accessible. If you love it, however, your eventual return to the game should be on the Playstation.

As someone who's played through both versions, absolutely play the 3DS version. There's no reason to play the PlayStation version in a world where the 3DS version got a localization, unless the modern DQ localizations make you break out in hives or something.

torneko's chapter starts with a gold coin and a dream and ends with a safe full of expensive iron swords

And when it's time for the actual hero to step up, none of that safe of expensive swords ends up in the hero's pocket, helping to save the world, unless the hero pays for them.

I don't think Torneko in DQ4 actually starts with any money. His wife gives him a bag lunch and that is it. You can make some gold by working at the local shop (and you should, to try and get a customer that's selling a Sword of Malice). Most of his earnings come from the armor haggling in that one castle and flipping gear once he has his own shop. Then there's the big payouts for the Silver Statuette and fulfilling the king's equipment order, but both of those are needed to finance other goals: buying the shop and completing the tunnel, respectively.

The real trick is to fill Taloon’s inventory with cautery swords so you can sell them when you find him in chapter 5.

That's exactly what I did when I played the NES version recently. I also left everything in the Statuette Cave except the eponymous item. Both strategies were a very helpful resource boost in chapter 5.

Although, I think actually getting the SoM/Cautery customer in the hometown shop took nearly an hour in real-time (I played on emulator and sped that portion up 3x).

I feel like 4 and 5 are deserving of like full rear end 11 quality remakes. Hmm this is one of those things we can all posts lists for isn't it

I think I'd say, HD2D for

2,3,6,7

and full on AAA for

1,4,5,8

maybe 9 would also be nice. a 2D version of 8 would be neat too. Just keep making them until every game has both?:v:

They should make new games instead of remakes; monster games specifically.

I finished DQ9 last night. Was the last game I didn’t beat and I don’t think we’re getting a remaster for a while so I went for it on an emulator. I must say, this is probably my least favorite game in the series. After you get used to named characters it’s hard to go back to silent party members. Game felt like DQ7 but with only a fairy to keep you company.

One thing I do recommend is if you have a softmodded New 3DS, turn on the New 3DS clock speed and L2 cache in the Luma settings because the framerate can be a bit rough in the overworld sections and having those enabled seems to fix it.

I haven't modded my 3DS yet (probably due to unfounded fears of my account getting banned or me loving up the process), but I've been meaning to. Didn't even know you could do stuff like that.

With the eshop gone your account on the 3DS is basically pointless unless you ever plan to play anything online on the 3DS, so might as well just wipe it then sign on with a burner account if you’re paranoid and mod it.

You can just :filez: all your downloaded games back anyway afterwards.

Nintendo usually only bans your actual account for stuff like using stolen credit cards and doing chargebacks, since it's otherwise just kinda counterintuitive and pointless to take away your option to pay them. If they detect CFW they just ban the hacked console's hardware ID, but also they seemingly only did this to the 3DS once in a 2017 banwave and never again.

In the remakes you can drop stacks of 99 of those, iron aprons, and other poo poo into the Bag too. Then sell it all and just buy what you want from the shops (and casino). :getin:

The monster stat balance (or lack thereof) and size mechanics in the 2 remake kinda sucked but it was pretty fun aside from that.

I think I preferred the OG tame mechanic over the RNG attack system from Joker, though neither is especially good imo.

The attack system isn't fully RNG, it's based on how much damage you would hypothetically do with a basic attack. Oomph, psyching up, and sapping the target will more or less all ensure you never fail a scouting attempt until the very end/endgame.

Commander Keene

Yeah, I haven't played that much of Joker but I thought I remembered scouting being fairly straightforward in the game, spending turns increasing your "damage" directly increased your chances of success, and having a monster with the ability to Psych Up (which was a trait for certain monsters IIRC) was a quick and easy way to scout things.

serefin99

Mikoooon~

Yeah, to be entirely fair, the hard part was just getting the tools you needed for scouting. Oomph and sap were easy enough since once you find the skill sets that had them, you could just keep passing them on through synthesis, but only Psycho trait monsters could actually psyche up, so trying to always have such a monster on your team could be a bit awkward.

Commander Keene
Dec 21, 2016

Again, I didn't play all that much, but I would keep a Psycho monster in reserve even if it wasn't on my main team as a scouting monster. That trait added legs to a monster IMO.

What was the issue with stat balance?

I found the game pretty straight forward and easy until I started fighting postgame bosses who were doing things that required more than "do damage, stay healed up" strats since I had mostly given up on trying to translate everything by then.

It's still RNG on whether it works if you don't have the firepower to hit 100%, and having to spend a bunch of rounds buffing up while hoping you don't die (or the target doesn't flee) is just real unfun.

Deki posted:

Growth didn't seem to actually reflect what was being shown. I forget the exact change, but I remember combining and turning one of my C rank monsters into an A rank (of the same kind, just a palette swap), whose hp/atk/def/agi growth should've gone up significantly going by the stat info, but the actual growth ended up being abysmal and their overall stats were worse despite the slower growth (the fodder monster had solid stats as well and a bunch of points to burn so that wasn't it either).

The gigant monsters just flat out weren't worth using over a full team of single-spot options. Though fighting the large stuff was annoying since they got to AOE you with everything.
