Big box stores have dedicated security for poo poo like that, so they just catch it on camera, make notes of your appearance, and typically shoplifters will be sloppy and leave empty boxes behind giving them a decent estimate. And once they suspect you’ve been shoplifting, they will alert the sales floor to keep an eye on you, making it even easier to figure out what you took. Though the point of alerting the sales floor is to send sales people at you every couple minutes to send a not-so-subtle message that you’re being watched. Because they’d still rather you not shoplift any further than deal with the hassle of losing $500+ of merch and then get the police involved. So if you’ve ever been harangued by retail employees asking if you need help, then chances are they think you’re a theft risk.

I wonder if I just haven't noticed them or I haven't visited any that do around here. What stores do? I haven't noticed anything from the Walmart, Publix or Target near me.

You’re not seeing commissioned workers at places like Wal-Mart or Best Buy.

I mean it IS possible it’s a slow day and the store manager is working themselves towards a heart attack trying to meet their revenue goal for the day, and they’re making it everyone’s problem. But even they know a customer will eventually get pissed being bugged every five minutes.

I can speak to Best Buy doing it, and yes they racially profile. Wal-Mart does too but they aren’t as aggressive about it, it comes down more to race and age. They’ll harass black teens loitering around the gaming aisle while letting a little old white lady go in and out with stolen TVs. (True story; she got up to 15 before they realized what was going on).

Wait, how do they track that?

Adding on to Donkey's post, Walmart supposedly spent a ton of money on an "AI" to flag suspicious self-checkout purchases. Going off of news stories, it's more hitting people who only pay for a single item or who ring up everything as a banana. I don't think they have a way to spot people "forgetting" to scan an item or two. Sometimes cop Facebook accounts share pictures and ask people to identify them.

But yeah, like the post said, if a store notices a repeat shoplifter they either bug them about it or get their picture and inform them that they're banned and if they come back they're getting a trespassing charge. More as a counter to the typical "Oh but what about these SCUMBAGS who steal TVs and tools to sell and keep getting away with it due to those drat bleeding heart DAs!" If a store cares they can work to stop it, so no need for an average person to care.

I would offer a video to help with the derail, but my way too long subscribtion list has been pretty boring the last few days. RE4 just sucking up a lot of oxygen.

The only thing I have to contribute to shoplift chat is that for literal years a ton of corporations, like walgreens, have been spitting out mad bullshit about how shoplifting was so bad it meant they had to put all of their products behind lock and key; and almost all of the language and products specifically cited were designed to insinuate that minorities, usually black people specifically, were behind the theft and that if it got any worse they'd have to close stores down nation wide.

Anyway earlier this year there was a news article about how that was all bullshit and they just made that up because they were closing stores anyway. The CEO or whatever literally got away with just saying whoopsie we lied and drummed up a huge amount of racist bullshit for no reason and no one really cared because they were still just arguing all over the internet about how black people steal too much and close down all the stores. So, you know. gently caress the corporations.

Parakeet vs. Phone

Also they did it primarily to cover up how awful their mergers were for the average consumer because they pulled a Gamestop and wound up with way more stores than they needed and wanted to close some. But closing stores normally puts stories in the paper about how grandma has to travel an extra 20 minutes to the new pharmacy, so...yeah, shoplifting stories planted in an agreeable press.

One of the more infuriating things given how fake it all was. Literally immediately debunkable by asking why CVS wasn't being overrun and ruined by this, but lol, they ran with it anyway.

I think there's a difference between observing how silly things can get on the internet, and the cyberbullying that can spring out from that - but I suspect the way to go about distinguishing between them in practice would involve a lot of self-policing.

It's absolutely great that people have a space that they can feel safe enough to share that part of themselves, although I do wish that it wasn't required in the first place.
There's a strangely puritanical set of thoughts that keep pervading all culture, and I don't know where it comes from, but I wish it'd go away.

My take-away from the video ended up being that all religions are bullshit, but that's not really an opinion that I didn't hold before

Snape is the Bad Boy character that people wished Draco Malfoy was, so it kinda makes sense in context (not the astral planes part though) It's basically the exact same reasoning for Adam Driver as Kylo Ren being a sex symbol.

Alan Rickman had certain attractive qualifies, and Adam Driver sort of got the same thing going on - but that's purely on a physical level (which doesn't not matter, but also isn't the be-all and end-all).
Where it breaks down a bit for me is that Alan Rickman was given very few traits in The Books That Shall Not Be Named because of the point of view, whereas Adam Driver had even less traits that were set in stone to go on - but ultimately both the characters we're presented with are products of good actors.

I feel like this argument is too long and lacks focus as a single video/I’d like it better as a series of more focused shorter videos, but she’s really good at keeping a static shot of herself interesting by using her posture and gestures to bisect and quarter the frame in dynamic ways. I’m not used to thinking about video essays like this, but there’s a lot of thought put into color coordination and how the lines of asymmetrical set dressing make up an image, even perspective with the script pages taped to the wall near and far from the camera on the right. Put a human figure in the middle in high contrast colors changing how she’s sitting every five minutes with her head framed by a painting and it’s not exactly boring to watch.

It’s a strange kind of innovation, but maybe that’s where analytic arguments on youtube have to go when the recommendation algorithm rewards hour-plus videos while the copyright algorithm makes it risky to have a lot of clips of things cut together. Also it probably takes too long to cut together video for something longer than an hour once you consider how long it takes to research and draft a long video. It’s like an iterative improvement on Sarah Z’s couch and tea mug and I bet more is coming.

I said that on the first guest episode of Stone Ocean, because it’s a point that comes up often on Cameron’s Ranged Touch shows. I think my phrasing was something closer to “media objects teach you how to read them”.

And thanks for listening to Sex Archie. The new setting, and old setups, bring a lot of latitude to Riverdale and we expect to have a lot of fun over the next 20 weeks or so.

Ahh, dammit. I listened to that entire episode and also a bit of the episode on Araki's 'Manga in Theory and Practice' book and didn't catch it so I got worried that I might have completely remembered it from a different podcast entirely. Could've swore it was also a quote from a book on top of that.

While I've got you for a second and I'm sure that there'll be more highlight podcast episodes going forward after the Stardust Crusaders one back on the 20th of March, ever thought of a 'Predictions that didn't pan out' reel?

Like back in part 2: The Hell Climb Pillar, 'I know how this'll work. The solution is teamwork. One of them punches the pillar to knock all the oil off while the other runs up it to get some distance and does the same for the other buddy. That is not what happens.'
