I played the new Mario Party game last night.

For some context, I'm trying to get :smug: ~*~my wife~*~ :smug: into video games so I thought this could be a good game for that. I've never played it but I know people who have and they recommended it as an obvious choice for a lighthearted party kind of thing. We set it up so it was her and me against two CPU players set on Easy just to mess around. Started playing on Yoshi's island or whatever the level is called.

We were having a great time right up until the very end of the game. In the board game, there's a mechanic that can randomly swap all stars and coins between any two random players. Not either stars or coins, but "Player A gives all of their stars and all of their coins to Player B in exchange for all of Player B's stars and coins. Two turns before the end of the game, where my wife and I had both earned a good amount of stars and coins as I was helping her out with mini games and figuring stuff out, and we were kind of clobering the CPU characters, this happened to my wife. A CPU character landed on a special event spot where that character has to roll to determine two random characters to swap a random collection of their resources. The dice was rolled and boom. The situation was Character C landed on that spot and rolled dice such that that my wife's character had to trade all of her stars and coins (like, 3 stars and 90 coins) with CPU character D, who had played the whole game poorly and had literally 0 stars and like 3 coins... two turns before the game ended, leaving my wife's character coinless and starless, and the "Easy" CPU character sitting with tons of resources.

Can anybody explain to me how this mechanic doesn't invalidate literally the entire game?

At that stage of the game, you're literally trading your entire game's progress with somebody else. It's not even internally consistent. What is the point of even having a board game format that tracks stars and coins and whatever else at all if there's a mechanic that just randomly swaps literally every resource owned by one character with another character with literally nothing either character can do to influence it? So you spend the entire game playing well and racking up points and there's only one or two turns left in the game? Guess what? gently caress you! This other character landed on a spot so now everything you have done for the entire game goes to that other character who sucked at everything and has nothing, and there's nothing you can do about it, and you have no time to make up any of it. Have a great day!

So I'm honestly asking, why does the board game part of Mario Party exist at all if it's just chaos and nothing matters and anybody's points can go to anybody else at any time because gently caress you? I realize I'm getting more annoyed than I should but I was excited to be able to play video games with my wife, and I think this poo poo has put her off them for a good while, and I don't blame her. Why would anybody play any game with a "progress" system if out of nowhere, without warning beforehand, it can just be completely invalidated at any time with no ability to influence it?

So, yeah. Sorry for blowing up, but based on this event alone I'm saying the game sucks, is bullshit, and shouldn't be played by anybody.

lmao i remember seeing this one out in the wild

I mentioned this in the last sagas thread but MrBibs is so ridiculously incapable of playing videogames that in world of warcraft he has to constantly level new characters to funnel all their gold onto his main, because he dies so much that he is broke at all times from repair costs. which for those who don't play wow: repair costs are insanely low that it's a nonfactor at every stage of the game for even a new player so he dies THAT much.

It was these very forums that gave me a poor opinion of Canadians. Even some posters in that thread that I actually like just seem to gloss over and ignore the Cree poster. I don't know why they see themselves as morally superior to Americans. They got a past as shady as any other euro empire colony, like Australia, S. Africa, the US and most of South America.

When I'm irredeemably bad at a game, usually, I just stop playing it. Can't fathom why one would stick with a game that actively makes them suffer.

Now excuse me, I need to queue up for my Silver II League game.

As a former Destiny 1 space chore worker, did they fix anything or is Destiny still trying to be the right time for all these broken clocks?

I’m saying this as someone who was ‘good’ at the game and put way too many hours down during my freelancing WFH years, and while I won’t come back to MMOs I’m curious if it’s gotten less…exploitative space chore simulator.

….and can folks still do that trick to give up a weapon slot and only carry snipers? That and the first few times soloing Crota are probably the only actual fun I had that wasn’t just voice chatting with friends.

Anyone remember a goon called Interstellar Idiot? He had a similar problem with games, he couldn't get past the crows (harpies?) at the start of the first God of War game. This is going way, way back, to like 2006 or something. He actually made a lot of threads and many of them were goldmined. Not because he was a good poster but because of some of the crazy things he said made for great comedy. Like how he was in his 20's and living away from home but his parents still monitored his browsing history to make sure he wasn't looking at porn. He also got probed by The Finn for trying to get goons to do his homework for him.

He was near the top of the posting gloryhole for number of goldmined threads.

Like I said, this is almost forums pre-history. The very thing that brought me to the forums in the first place were the comedy articles on the front page. Taylor 'Psychosis' Bell was easily my favourite writer. I'd put him on a par with Seanbaby, even. I searched his name and got 7 results, 5 of which were me asking if anyone remembered him. I went and checked the frontpage to see if his work is still around.

Here's his stuff:

I feel bad for him. It's such a level of stupid that it's probably clinical and not really something he can fix by watching a YouTube video on how to press 1 then 2 then 3 then 1 then 2 then 4 then sometimes 5 or 6.

Mario Party, like Mario Kart or Monopoly, exists to break up families and induce screaming rage in all age groups to the hilarity of other players. That's the point. If the Dalai Lama could be persuaded to play a few rounds he'd chuck a wiimote through a window given the right rolls.

That reminds me of the eternal argument in the fighting game thread about game tutorials where sure you could explicitly tell someone what to do in a nicely organized and well thought out way to learn a character or class or spec, and then you'll still get a mr.bibs who must have the apm of a sloth or yobgoblin who had a seizure while playing guilty gear. Those types rule.

I can't imagine ever being in a situation where your complaints are so obnoxious, the creator of a game approaches you and offers to give you a controller that is most likely worth more than what the game was selling for.
