I've been voting S since I was old enough to vote. In 2017, I decided to start voting V because their views more aligned with my own.

But lately they've been kind of ehhh.. I don't have the right words for it.

I have a lot of vulnerable friends. Who depends on the S status quo to keep SD from ruining their lives. And I'm a bit vulnerable myself.

But V have been kind of jumping up and down in the boat, humiliating S, and they were also very questionable in their handling of the Ukraine war.

I mostly agree with them. But they also concern me. I don't have the words for it.

In theory I agree with a lot of what V wants, and they definitely seem to be interested in leftist principles, instead of morphing into a lovely neolib amalgam like S have, but have you seen their official website where they talk about their views and what they want to achieve and how they're going to do it?

It's all just "we want the best for everyone <3" as a response to every question with no concrete plans of action or anything practical at all. It's embarrassing.

Actually it's probably not too uncommon, V and S are basically the same, except one pays more lip service to working class people.

But yeah, calling the liberal party "Venstre" is weird. The Radical Left being shitlibs is funnier though.

Supposedly they were left of the party they split from, but it's not like that actually matters if they've been shifting right ever since.

Nowadays it's just a good reminder that a party that calls itself a left-win party but has right-wing policies can't be trusted.

Feel similar about the left in Finland and I vote SDP mostly. I feel I mostly agree with them, but they also concern me. For my part though it's the urban / rural divide.

Like while I agree with most of their politics, I don't think if they are friendly to rural areas in the slightest. Based on what I read online from leftist voters in leftist spaces, I think we're pretty much despised in general. So I vote SDP.

More like studying sociology and then realising that you have limited job opportunities/that you can actually make a difference to individuals within the system.

I left V when I was younger because they had a ton of problems with antisemitism in the israel/palestine question. It could never be brought up, especially if said problem came from racialised muslims.

I was planning to vote for them this year but their handling of Ukraine was shameful.

In general V is a party I align with on most issues, same as basically every S voter. V's problem isnt their stance on the issues, it is that the party is full of morons who should not be trusted with governing anything more complicated than an ABF study circle. Most people just don't trust them; Ukraine I'm afraid just reminded us why.

Exactly. And while NATO has been a massive fiasco in its own right, it was still the right descision at the time. Hindsight is 20/20 and all that.

Still, I must admit I smirk a bit when I watch the ongoing trainwreck which was supposed to be the biggest political win for M and L in foreign policy since joining the EU. And a good chunk of it is because they cozied up to SD and their crowd.

ASK ME ABOUT LUMBER

norway, building on a similar thing in denmark, has a tradition where people finishing up their secondary education dress up in uniforms and party, do various rituals, perform challenges etc.

it's morphed a lot over the years and has now become big business, with the purchase, refurbishment and decoration of large party buses being a big deal. i'm old enough that this was a rarity when i was russ - most people were still buying beater cars and doing a fair amount of work on their own, with the busses being a sort of posh-boy phenomenon. now it's a deeply ingrained part of russ culture. it adds a ton of social stress to the kids because getting on a buss is such a clear sign that you're "in" or "out", and it is very expensive (as is a lot of modern russ stuff).

the buses are a nuisance and complete conspicuous-consumption stuff. they make a lot of unpredictable noise and depending on where you live add a risk of suddenly disgorging a bunch of drunken eighteen-or-nineteen-year-olds onto your lawn where they will puke and piss the place down. generally, the russ celebration is probably due a bit of a revision - i remember it being a lot of fun and a good time, but the costs are getting to be a bit much imo

While the Danish version appears to have escalated a bit since I did it, what I'm hearing about the Norwegian version just sounds crazy. The prices I'm seeing in Denmark are between like 15,000 to 40,000 DKK total, depending on the date, whether you get a truck with inbuilt sound system and LED lighting, and whether you get a DJ for the trip. The cheap end seems about right for the norm back in my day, in terms of what you're getting and the price, adjusting for inflation.

The Norwegian trend of spending like 1,5 million DKK on buying and refurbish a bus is just nuts. Even more so because the rental prices actually appear to be a decent bit lower than in Denmark. Though rental prices might be lower per day because the Norwegian tradition includes multi-day celebrations.(?)

ASK ME ABOUT LUMBER

i think it's connected with the general nouveau-richeness of norwegian society. the people who set the cultural tone until fairly recently grew up in the shadow of the war, occupation and post-war period, so this sort of display of excess seems to have been more taboo. a lot of the challenges are also straightforward goofy fun, like going for a swim when it's cold or wearing loaves of bread for shoes for a day. prior to the streamlining of norwegian secondary education there also used to be a bit of real rivalry between the different "colours" (people who went to mercantile schools would be blue, people who went to academic gymnas would be red, etc) which would mobilise some jingoism on the part of the different russ groups and was, again, straight-up fun. this was very much on its way out when i did it, and i think that there are now no mercantile secondary education schools left outside of maybe one or two posho schools in oslo.

so there's a lot of hype, with companies with a profit motive to maximise that hype, in a situation where a lot of the cultural restraints on exaggerated spending are very loose. it means that something which i think can and should be a fun, positive thing for society gets a very ugly sheen to it.
