Savage was so good. I mainly played the healers and just loved seeing a giant wave of elephant men smashing tree trunks into everything

That trailer made me realize how much of my affection for Battlezone was wrapped up in the Cold War aesthetic... since I totally forgot they made a second one.

I've only ever played BZ2. Had some pretty sick mods back in the day.

I think a big problem with BZ2 for me was it leant too far on the RTS side, which made it feel much more generic since you could get a satellite up in the first few minutes and then just play a fairly generic RTS from there, as opposed to in 1 where the satellite view was at the end of the tech tree. Also, since you didn't have the strict unit limits of BZ1, your personal combat power was a much smaller percentage of your total. How many properly FPRTS, like Battlezone, as opposed to FPS/RTS hybrids, like Natural Selection, are there? I feel the commander/FPS pairing is much more common. I guess Pikmin and Overlord type games are more the former than the latter, but they're also third person and don't exactly have a lot of base building.

I've never played it, but I think Uprising: Join or Die was one of those. Otherwise there was also Hostile Waters and the various Carrier Command iterations.

Great fun, the 2nd multiplayer game I played was an 8v8 epic 3 hour marathon which we eventually won, really reminds me of multiplayer TA games of old.

I enjoyed Natural Selection 2 for a few days until I ran into some guy with a clan tag who spent the entire post-game ranting in voice chat about it's all my fault we lost, even though I I had like 4 hours in the game and spent most of it just spectating because nobody ever streams it. So I uninstalled the game because gently caress that community. Game is cool though

Probably of interest to someone in this thread: https://www.idlethumbs.net/3ma/episodes/board-game-vs-simulation-style-strategy-games A new episode of strategy game podcast Three Moves Ahead, this one on the topic of "the different design goals between a more "Board Gamey" strategy game like Civilization and the "Simulationist" breed exemplified by Europa Universalis". I'm posting it most because of its guest list: both Soren Johnson, lead designer of Civ 4, and Johan Andersson, who was for a very long time the head game dev guy at Paradox Interactive and designer on, at least the first and second iterations of Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron and Victoria.

This seems pretty cool. https://twitter.com/AgeOfEmpires/status/1650926666506547201 quote:Welcome to Return of Rome, a completely new type of expansion pack which brings Age of Empires, the title that started it all, into Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition as a brand new self-contained experience. This new expansion will allow you to challenge friends with the original sixteen Age of Empires civilizations — plus one brand-new Return of Rome exclusive civilization, the Lac Viet— and relive the triumph and trials of antiquity. Battle your way across the ancient world with three new campaigns featuring conquerors, empire-builders, and gifted tacticians fighting desperately against fate! As an additional bonus, the Romans will no longer be bound by time as they become a new playable civilization within Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, ready to battle in the new Age.

I can think of two, maybe three reasons: - You have to already own or commit to buying Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition, since this is not a standalone game. - They're being vague as to whether the game will come with the original campaigns or not. - Who knows how the multiplayer community divides itself? This one's more up in the air though. Apart from that, no. There's going to be a bunch of additional features and a new civilization that, as far as I know aren't even being added to Age of Empires I's Definitive Edition. Godsworn has a demo out Steam's Tacticon fest. I've only played part of a skirmish so far, but it's definitely midway between Age of Mythology and Warcraft 3 with some convenient, automated resourcing mechanics.

Just picked this up today after seeing a beagulrush video about it: https://store.steampowered.com/app/669330/Mechabellum/ It's very solid as a competitive auto battler. Which I've found I really like as a genre lately, but this one ticks some boxes that your regular auto battlers don't for me. Building a formation of mechs and upgrading them at the right time is a solid feeling. And I've won games where I've been on the losing foot for most of it only to turn it around dramatically.
