It basically is just make work, combined with a healthy dose of corruption. Someone's getting paid to do this, and the commanding officers in charge are getting healthy kickbacks into their pocket. The same corruption even extends to soldiers' pay and maintenance, with the numbers of actually available troops being nowhere near what the company/BTG/regiment's strength should be. Strelkov recently complained that one such company who he did some fundraising for apparently had less than half its strength on paper, because most of the people who were supposedly on its rolls didn't even exist (in his words, he used the term dead souls). The irony is that they're afraid of an amphibious assault coming from somewhere, when in reality Ukraine doesn't have that kind of capability. The most that could be done would be an attempt to cut off supplies to the peninsula.

The only defenses on the Crimean peninsula actually worth the name are present in pre-existing measure near Sevastopol, Simferopol, and the assorted air bases, military bases, and temporary staging points/logistics hubs, and the ones that were recently built worth anything were in Perekop isthmus and Armyansk, because they're located near the entrance to Crimea itself. The rest are all copes that are poorly built, and according to the head of Rusich (neo-nazi mercenaries) both these and the ones in Zaporizhzhia oblast aren't capable of offering serious resistance to a determined enemy while pointing out where the contractors who built them (actual civilians with no instructions!) had messed up.

i suppose i am really wondering if anyone high up in the russian command sees this stuff (pictures / video of dumb bullshit like the above). are they aware of it but dont care, or are they not aware? rhetorical question, it doesnt really matter i guess, but i do find it strange and interesting. it makes me wonder what the russian higher command actually does care about (besides their lives and presumably money). what is going on in their brains?

Anyways I talk to him from time to time and he was part of a Stryker unit and got left behind when the unit deployed to Iraq. His job was to paint rocks on the edge of roads reflective white. A few years later he got left behind again when the unit deployed to Afghanistan.

Bad news, the leaker helped to gently caress the counteroffensive timing, in addition to weather and slow deliveries of supplies from the West:

https://kyivindependent.com/ukraine-war-latest-counteroffensive-reportedly-delayed-eu-reacts-to-decapitation-video/

Kyiv Independent posted:

Long-awaited Ukraine's counteroffensive has been delayed due to weather conditions, slow military hardware deliveries, and a low stock of ammunition, the Washington Post reported on April 12.

The recent U.S. intelligence document leaks are also complicating matters, according to the report. They delve into details about the capabilities of Ukraine’s Armed Forces and alleged weaknesses of air defense, which could make Ukrainians alter counteroffensive strategies.

A Ukrainian corporal told the newspaper that the Ukrainian military is conducting reconnaissance missions in eastern Donetsk Oblast to “test” Russian defenses. But for a full offensive to go forward, Ukraine needs more heavy equipment, armored vehicles, and training.

Freshly-mobilized Russian troops were being deployed into the Bakhmut sector in Donetsk Oblast to dig reinforcements and had done so with any material possible, “even trash,” a Ukrainian captain stationed outside of Bakhmut told the Post.

Speculation about the authenticity of the leaked intelligence documents is ongoing. (Editor’s Note: The next episode of our video podcast, “This Week in Ukraine,” will focus on the intelligence leak. Subscribe to our Youtube channel to not miss it.) Ukraine’s military intelligence said on April 7 that the supposed classified war files leaked online were forged by Russia and dismissed it as “fake.” The reports suggest, however, that the U.S. is taking the leak seriously and investigating its source.

The five-week-old documents haven’t revealed details of when, how, or where Ukraine plans to launch its counterattack. Oleksii Danilov, National Security and Defense Council Secretary, said on April 6 that “no more than five people” are filled in on Ukrainian plans for the upcoming counteroffensive.

Border Panic and ‘Total Disarray’ as War Spills Into Russia posted:

Residents of Russia’s Bryansk region say local authorities orchestrated a massive cover-up to conceal the fact that the war has come to Russian territory and they can’t do anything to stop it.

The independent outlet Verstka on Wednesday published interviews with several residents who say a Russian border guard was killed last week when the governor claimed to have fended off a Ukrainian attack.

“Even the local newspaper wrote that there were no fatalities. There was not a word about the death, but more than a thousand people came to the funeral,” Tatyana Pashechko was quoted saying of her brother, Sergei Listratenko.

Listratenko was reportedly killed by a mine after locals were told “Ukrainian nationalists” launched an unsuccessful attack. Pashechko said she believes local officials are trying to hide her brother’s death to prevent panic.

But many residents are already panicking, and three different villages got together earlier this week to vent their frustrations at a public gathering, Verstka reports.

After apparently shrugging their shoulders as Russian forces spent more than a year bombing Ukrainian civilians, some residents complained to the local paper that they now feel like targets.

“What if they come at night? We’ll all be killed,” one woman was quoted saying.

“I am speaking now on behalf of all the inhabitants of the villages: why did we decide to hold a gathering? Because this is a cry from the soul. We are scared and don't know what to do. We do not have a single checkpoint, there are no warnings of shelling. We don’t have bomb shelters, and our basements aren’t meant to hide in. … The governor says that everything is fine and wonderful here,”resident Anna Astapova told Verstka, adding that people were fed-up with the “lies” of local authorities.

After the public meeting, there were reportedly calls for participants to face criminal charges for “discrediting” the military.

Perhaps with that in mind, Astapova said: “We support and respect the army and President Vladimir Vladimirovich [Putin]. But what’s happening now is total disarray. So let’s keep quiet, and then tomorrow what? They will just come and mine the whole village or cut us all to hell. It’s terribly frightening.”

Sounds like the Russian Volunteer Corps is at it again.

These guys aren't going to kickstart a revolution by shelling an minor border village and even less so by mining its cemetery (which is also a war crime, I'm pretty sure), so I think the smart move for Ukraine would be to disarm and disband the group.
