Here's a hypothetical for the thread. If you were designing from scratch a passenger airliner specifically for Spirit or Frontier or Ryanair, with the overriding goal of squeezing down per-seat operating costs as much as possible, what would it look like? Assume the development costs are written off.

No windows? Unpressurized? Standing room only?

They've already found a way to save money on landing gear:

Does a bear split in the woods near Zheleznogorsk?
The first two E-3As originally had normal passenger windows. In a close-enough or properly-angled photo, you can see the panel that replaced them. The rest were purpose-built without windows.

Also I don't remember if I posted in here, but the USAF has begun the E-3's retirement. The first tail to go was 75-0560, which flew from Tinker to DM on the 6th, and is now parked at the boneyard for processing. A few days before departure, Tinker hosted a kind of open house for former AWACS crew and maintainers, and a couple thousand of them showed up to say goodbye and sign their names, inside and out.

Aviators in general are. But pilots try to be the dudebros of the dudebros.

You also don't get to pick your own callsign, generally. So most of those don't have a flattering story behind them. I actually know a bunch of the folks on that interior panel, and none of them are flattering.

Yeah, I'm aware of how callsigns are doled out. I didn't think every officer got one because I thought they were for pilots only.

The only military aviators I've met have been pilots, so my biases come from that.

Not just pilots. My brother does...something in the back of a P-8 and he has one as I understand it. I think you just have to do something sufficiently stupid and be off the ground for your job. Someone post the STAB guy's story again.

My understanding is that Navy call signs tend to be acronyms, and yes they are basically always assigned to you after you did something memorably stupid or embarrassing. I recall another one that was WHOOF or something, which the pilot got after using the relief tube in his plane just before landing and forgetting to zip himself up before got out -- Weiner Hanging Out Of Flightsuit

I just think it’s wild that we are actually finally replacing the E-3. I always assumed it would be one of those platforms that flew forever. They’re pretty beat up right? Is the replacement good? Seems like one of those things that will be made to go right because it’s so important.

I’ll try and remember to ask. Iirc his is sufficiently long that I doubt it’s an acronym, but they also rubbed elbows with marine pilots in flight school so they may have been infected with jarhead brain worms.

I don't care that it's only a few inches deep in the last half of the video, driving around in water as far as the eye can see is literally nightmare poo poo for me. I get reoccurring dreams where I need to drive on a flooded bridge to get to the other side of a huge lake or river and that poo poo gave me chills.

How much water is allowed on the runway before they shut it down? Also, what happens if you end up landing in a bunch of water? Would it end up talking out your landing gear at some point?

Would it be more effective? It looks like it's resisting bending where the spar is trying to buckle and those ropes are in tension keeping it from buckling.

Yeah, 2x4s are stiffer tallways. the strut isn't there to keep the wing from blowing backward.

Powered Descent

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but if you tried to fly like this, the lift force would flex the wing ever so slightly upward, yes? Which would tend to "unbend" the bent strut just a little. Which would give more slack to all those straps and cords. Which would possibly loosen them just enough for the wood piece to slide right out.
