How exactly did this deal shake out anyway? What did Xi do or promise to do? Admittedly it doesn’t have to be much since the US’s offer was “nothing” followed by “we outright want the war to continue because we hate Iran” but still.

turns out bombing other gas pipelines of the whitest peoples and confiscating foreign reserves at will are very persuasive arguments, even if that came from a rando chinese villager

Eritrea fought a 30 year long war of independence under a Hoxaist party and ended up conquering Ethiopia and putting their (then) allies TPLF in power, Djibouti was a colony of France, which murdered its president when it tried to join Somalia and put a puppet in charge.

Basically here’s a map of core Ethiopia (then called Abyssinia). The red areas were colonized in the 1800’s, by the Habesha (or Abyssinian) Macro-ethnicity, using British and Russian guns. The conquered Oromo (officially called the racial slur Galla) were basically slaves until the 1970’s, and all languages that were not Amharic were banned.

Eritrea was handed over to Ethiopia against the will of the Eritrean people by the United States, which wanted access to Kagnew Radar station (which became obsolete 4 years later). Haile immediately tore up the constitution of Eritrea, banned the Tigre and Beher-Tigray languages and dismissed the Eritrean legislature.

They were big fans of Showa Japan and this could've led to a royal marriage between minor nobility. The 1931 Ethiopian constitution promulgated by Haile Selassie was based on Japan's!

https://interactivepasts.com/blog-posts/understanding-alternative-histories-the-ethiopian-japaniser-movement/

quote:

The Ethiopian intelligentsia took a keen interest in Japan in the early 1930’s and the 1931 constitution of Ethiopia, the first piece of modern legislation after centuries of unwritten medieval law, was modeled after the constitution issued under emperor Meiji of Japan. Its primary author, Ethiopia’s minister of finance Tekle Hawariat Tekle Mariyam, formed a clique of like-minded intellectuals around him known as the “Japanisers”. Japan’s dramatic metamorphosis by the end of the 19th century from a feudal society—like Ethiopia’s—into an industrial power attracted them. For these young, educated Ethiopians, Japanization was a means to an end—to solve the problem of underdevelopment. Japan’s rapid modernization, after all, had guaranteed its peace, prosperity, and independence, while Ethiopia’s continued backwardness threatened its very survival.

quote:

Japanese-Ethiopian relations continued to prosper in the 1930’s. A massive irrigation project of Lake Tara in Ethiopia was undertaken by Japan and 100.000 Japanese planters settled in the region. There was even some international commotion regarding a “royal’ marriage between Prince Lij Araya Abeba of Ethiopia and Masako Kuroda of Japan (neither of which were from their countries’ ruling dynasties) but Italian and general European resistance against Asian expansionism in Africa as well as the Japanese government’s diplomatic ties with Italy and Germany led to a general breakdown of relations with Ethiopia.

Hundreds released in Yemen prisoner swap after Houthi-Saudi talks

quote:

The release and swap of nearly 900 detainees by the two sides in Yemen’s conflict has begun, a significant confidence-building measure as peace talks between Saudi envoys and Houthi rebels intensify.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which is managing the prisoner exchange, said on Friday its planes would be used to carry the released detainees between six cities in Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

More exchanges will take place in the future as there are an estimated 15,000 prisoners.
