option 1: the us is deploying viruses the same way it does drugs and armed violence to keep asia and africa weak option 2: the us is bad at containing viruses so just does this research in places where it doesnt care about outbreaks option 3: option 2 is the most cost effective and covert means of achieving option 1 - the lab is obviously justified did you see how much virus is around here for it to fight?!!

Real hurthling! posted:option 1: the us is deploying viruses the same way it does drugs and armed violence to keep asia and africa weak Option 2 is demonstrably true given how many times viruses have escaped from labs since they started doing this research but it quickly runs into the issue of determining why they're doing this research in the first place. They say it's to develop vaccines and other therapeutics but eg aerosolizing pathogens such as Ebola and H5N1 etc is basically indistinguishable from bioweapons research (ie it's "dual use") and so much of it is funded by the military. The rest is funded by pharmaceutical companies who obviously have a perverse incentive to see a return on their investment as well

Presented without comment 2010: "The Viral Hemorrhagic Fever Consortium (VHFC) was established in 2010 as a result of a founding five-year $15 million contract awarded to Tulane University by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which is part of the National Institute of Health. … The consortium has since been expanded to include partners from several other consortia, including The Africa Centre Of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases, The Center for Viral Systems Biology, and The Viral Hemorrhagic Fever Immunotherapeutic Consortium. Medical institutions that are part of VHFC include Kenema Government Hospital, Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, and various other partners in West Africa." https://vhfc.org/consortium/ ^ "The Kenema laboratory stands in the grounds of the Kenema Government Hospital (KGH). The lab, but not the hospital, has been operated by the US-based Viral Hemorrhagic Fever Consortium (VHFC) since 2010. Though there is an interesting continuity–a viral hemorrhagic fever laboratory was run by the US CDC in Kenema between 1976 up to Sierra Leone’s civil war in the 1990s." https://www.independentsciencenews.org/health/did-west-africas-ebola-outbreak-of-2014-have-a-lab-origin/  ^ "In addition to Tulane University, academic partners include Scripps Research, Harvard University, Redeemer’s University, Broad Institute, La Jolla Institute of Immunology, and University of Texas Medical Branch, as well as industry partner Zalgen Labs." https://vhfc.org/consortium/  2014: 10 March 2014: "On March 10, 2014, hospitals and public health services in Guéckédou and Macenta alerted the Ministry of Health of Guinea … about clusters of a mysterious disease characterized by fever, severe diarrhea, vomiting, and an apparent high fatality rate." https://www.nejm.org/doi/10.1056/NEJMoa1404505 18 March 2014: "Médecins sans Frontières in Europe was notified and sent a team, which arrived in Guéckédou on March 18. The project, which involves researchers from 15 institutions, will be led by Erica Ollmann Saphire, professor at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI). ... Viral sequencing identified Ebola virus (species Zaïre ebolavirus), one of five viruses in the genus Ebolavirus, as the cause." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5779383/ 23 March 2014: "On March 23, 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported cases of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the forested rural region of southeastern Guinea. Why are "dealers" putting Fentanyl in weed again? As an opiate addict in recovery, I only knew two people who would do this for fun. It seems like something you would not want to give the "just the weed" people and not say anything. Is this some low level cartel war against the gov? Another bad state actor? This the CIA doing this to give us a reason to hate China more? After chips from China , pivot to a XI-Cartel link killing Americans for the nightly news? Just curious.

When I was a kid I was at OMSI (science education center/museum) in Portland. One of the exhibits had a quiz thing where one of the questions was like: "The smallpox virus has been eradicated. Should samples be kept it secure labs for further study?" I, a dumbass, thought "No, it's been eradicated, why risk it leaking?" and selected "No, samples should not be kept." Then I moved the slider and it said "Wrong, it's important to keep and study samples to learn more about the virus."

We need to learn how to aerosolize Ebola to understand the evolutionary mechanisms behind how Ebola *might* become aerosolized in nature even though this has literally never happened in the whatever thousands of years Ebola has existed in nature... to protect ourselves against it. Even though it doesn't exist. Same with shoving furin cleavage sites into SARS-like coronaviruses lol I'm very concerned about public health
