To play devils advocate, Iraq is somewhat of a democracy today, ironically even if would have been better geopolitically for America if it was still an easy to control Military junta . Also Kurds are 20% of the population.

even though by some miracle a nascent democratic government has been able to pull itself together, I just can't wrap my head around the idea that between America's military and sanctions 2+ million civilians have died needlessly since Desert Storm, a portion of the nation's infrastructure and cities were destroyed, ISIS was allowed to form and thrive, Turkey is still allowed to abuse Kurds, and yet somehow a quarter of the population still thinks well enough of the US to believe in its commitment to democracy

e: I just truly don't know how you look at what the US has done for the past three decades - some of which must have impacted you, personally, in a profoundly negative way - and come to that conclusion

ASK ME ABOUT LUMBER

generally when you have power you sort of can't help but appeal to some people. the US were in power in iraq for a long time, and a fair amount of iraqis will have seen US soldiers guarding a polling station or seemingly sincerely trying to fix some kind of problem.

also the question is "do you think the US is serious about [democracy]", not "do you think the US has had a positive role in the region"

I think it boils down to party politics, and there are still some pro-American factions in Iraq (including Kurds) that see the US as a way to balance against Iranian influence. There obviously pro-Iranian parties as well.

The KDP and the Progress Party (Kurdish and Arab Sunni moderates respectively) are probably going to be more pro-American than Fatah supporters. Al-Sadr was a bit of a wild card.

welp, the rabid dog of Sudan Hamidti (the lapdog of the UAE and Israel) has officially started a new sudanese civil war, he's now fighting the other fascist military dictator Burhans regular military:-

it's a civil war between two military factions, this will be a disaster for the normal people of sudan.

That article has some background that goes back to 2019

https://twitter.com/RSFSudan/status/1647305534012375040?s=20

quote:

- Our message to our Egyptian brothers is to keep your children safe and secure, and we are ready to hand them over to the Egyptian government.

The Egyptian battalion is not considered an enemy and surrendered without resistance.

- What happened is a price for democracy, and we made a pledge to ourselves that power belongs to the people.

- We were forced to confront and we cannot surrender.

The RSF has a twitter and seems to confirm they captured Egyptian troops at a Sudanese Armed Forces base

Somalian isn’t a word , and yeah, that’s what the star on Somalia’s and Djibouti’s flags represent. The five Somali regions before the partition of Somalia.

On the Sudanese side, with all the drama over the dams on the Nil, i guess we are more likely to see the "Ethiopian renaissance" dam get blown up than just some land grab. It would gently caress so many people over on both side, but hey, war!!!!

a lot of the social media about the Egyptian military forces and planes that were captured in Sudan just assumed they were there in case the order to blow up the GERD ever came. I couldn't actually find that confirmed anywere.
