Did the US feed PMCs to the meatgrinder the same way Russia is? My memory is really hazy. I seem to recall a big uproar when a couple of Blackwater mercs got lynched in Iraq but that's about it

e: I guess there's no way they could have given the massive relative disparity between the US and Iraq, and Russia and Ukraine though

wagner is more like the ffl than the US PMCs. when france has some lovely things that need doing, they send in the ffl because unlike french soldiers, the public doesn't give a hoot about them dying.

French in Indochina and Algeria; the FFL exists for the same reason, going back to the creation of the French empire overseas.

do i have it right that F35s are mostly taking over or have taken over for DEAD roles but the f16/ea18/f15 variants are still in the SEAD roles? or is it supposed to be phasing those fairly new specialized airframes out?

It’s a mix. AARGM-ER is integrated on F-35s of all models, F-18E/F, and EA-18s. But there still exist Wild Weasel F-16 squadrons. F-35 or long-range standoff (from whatever) is your best bet versus more capable SAMs. The AARGM-ER significantly improves standoff amd speed of the incoming ARM. Navy always maintains SEAD capability and would be loathe to limit it to a low density platform like F-35Cs. Plus a lot of focus on using low observable cruise missiles against SAMs and ship-based radars.

Meanwhile, the army and marines have developed much better organic capability to strike tactical SAM systems, given the assumption that no future war will be a cakewalk in the air and that the air component may be busy with larger SAM networks, depots, ports, enemy sortie generation, etc.

SEAD and DEAD are too similar a mission to differentiate by a bespoke platform, unless you’re specifically talking electronic suppression.

Ukraine being massively outgunned is phrased as a positive, because clearly theyre only firing less because theyre being more accurate with their shots. Also Russia has been running out of ammo since April 2022, but I guess the Soviet shell mines are deeper than previously thought

In the last few days most of Ukraine's neighbors abruptly banned the importation of Ukrainian grain and other commodities. Agricultural exports are a massive share of Ukraine's export revenues. Very weird story.

Sort of. Blackwater was more tasked with dishing out casualties then taking them but they also hired Johnny foreigner to do some of their work. But it was also somewhere to go for retired military who weren't tired of fighting. Like the reason the Blackwater guys were lynched was because they were hired to escort convoys and they made a habit of indiscriminately firing at anyone who got too close to them.

Ukraine has very cheap grain for Europe because it had such a backlog of grain that didn't make it out via the Black Sea due to the initial lack of insurance for grain ships due to the war and the continuing comparatively snail-paced exports via shipping compared to years without a war. Poland and some others are going the protectionist route to avoid cheap Ukrainian grain harming their farmers at the market. EU doesn't like individual members making such trade relation decisions unilaterally.

They'll burn all that grain before they take what Africa can offer for it. I wouldn't be surprised if the annexed territories eventually sell more to them than the remaining parts ever will.
